- Tesla Model Y and 3 (non-performance) now come with a more comfortable suspension so I had to test this out for myself to compare to my 2020 Tesla Model Y Long Range.

UPDATE: 50,000 Mile Review: czcams.com/video/XSTvZhJXffY/video.html
You never did compare your suspension to the updated 2023 one. Thoughts??? I have a 23 MYLR and im not happy with the vibrations i feel in the steering wheel.
Tesla
have you seen the new luxury suspension video I did?
Getting a new Y w/ 2023 suspension plus rebates vs a used Y is a no-brainer. This suspension was a big part of what drove me towards the 2023. This video was helpful. Good episode.
Took my 2019 Tahoe on a 1,500 mile roadtrip last year and had a great experience. Took my 2022 Model Y Performance on the same trip last month, and it was even better. Total cost was $344 (for gas) in the Tahoe and $126 (for supercharging) in the Tesla. The Tesla added an extra 3.5 hours to the trip, but all of our luggage fit just fine in the Tesla. Just driving locally in my city amounts to about $2 in the Tesla and about $10 in the Tahoe. The Tahoe is bigger but the Tesla has tons of storage space. It's just a matter of preference. My Tesla goes 0-60 in 3.5 seconds like a video game. The Tahoe does it in about 7 seconds. For me, the Tesla wins.
3.5 hours extra for charging is a lot. If you go the speed limit should only be 2.
Very interesting comment. I was just on a 320 mile trip each way and was thinking I’d like to be in a Tahoe because they are so comfortable and could absorb the massive potholes in and around Pittsburgh better than most other rides.
@@JonathanRootD OK, well I actually own the car and it took 3.5. Not sure where you are getting this info from, but in the real world, that's what it took me. You honestly think that you can travel 1,500 miles and only charge for 2 hours? Not in a Model Y Performance.
@@Jbiglin I've never been to Pittsburgh, but in Tampa, there are some rough streets. There's no doubt that the Tahoe is a better ride when it comes to comfort, but to be honest, I don't care. I'm willing to have a rougher ride to have the acceleration, instant power, convenience, nearly zero maintenance and overall appeal of the Tesla. My last car was a 2018 Subaru STi. It was rough. The Tesla is not that. It's stiff, but comfortable. I can only speak from my experience, but I love my Tesla.
Man I love my Lincoln navigator but I love my Tesla too damn
This other guy is like Jeff bezos in an alternate universe if he wasn’t rich af
😂
😂😂😂
We all know he's still in the top 2%
😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂
This is the video I've been waiting for... you might be the 1st person to compare the new OEM comfort suspension against aftermarket options. Thank you!
Glad to help!
@@Gjeebs thank you for the video. My MY is made at the beginning Of August at Giga Shanghai, so I didn’t get softer suspension. But, for my surprise, I got double pain windows in the back and in the front. My question is, which suspension is better, aftermarket, or present one? I have 19” wheels, ride is kinda ok, but I would like to make it softer. Is it worth an investment? Thank you very much.😊
So what’s the conclusion ?
Your reassurance that this comfort suspension is quiet represents a huge improvement from the test Y’s I’ve driven at dealers. Happy I ordered one after the price drop and with tax rebate. Getting excited! Thanks for this and your other entertainment videos
For the tax rebate do we need to take the delivery before March or just place an order before March?? Also, what's the official date in March??
@@aniketphatak951 must be delivered by march 15th i think
@@aniketphatak951 It must be delivered before the IRS defines the battery content rules (estimated to be sometime in March)
www.irs.gov/pub/taxpros/fs-2022-42.pdf
What was your pick? Performance? LR with 20"?
@@leffingwells The Performance doesn't qualify for the tax credit as its over $55k and the 7-seat Performance that would qualify as an SUV ($80k limit for the tax credit) rather than a hatchback is not currently available to order. Any Long Range would still have to be under the $55k threshold, so you can only throw in a couple of options (say, a non-white paint color and tow hitch).
I test drove a Model Y Performance today and the ride felt silky smooth to me. Much smoother than my 2015 Mercedes GLA with run-flat tires.
Same I think this suspension shit is propaganda
MM- Did you get the chance to test drive the Long Range as well? If so, did you notice a difference?
@@gmoneii1117 I bought a long range and it is slightly softer but not dramatically so IMHO.
@@mangoldm - I’m Your opinion, Would you say the extra $4k for the Performance Model, is worth it?
@@gmoneii1117 it does have more pep so if that’s your priority then, yes.
This new model Y suspension is even softer then my 2018 model S with air suspension. Really love the Ys comfort.
I think Teslas plan is to make model 3 and model Y non-performance models slightly more comfortable At the expense of a bit of performance in speed & maneuverability. But simultaneously make the performance models Even better on the track; differentiating the two types. Helping the sales of the two different type drivers. I think the average Tesla driver would prefer a smoother, softer, and quieter ride rather .5 sec speed boost or super firm tight turning.
We got a 2023 MYP a month ago and have put around 1500 miles on it, and I can honestly say it has a more comfortable suspension than the 2019 Chevrolet Equinox Premier we replaced. People who complain must be coming from a Lexus or Mercedes, I have never owned a luxury vehicle and don't understand the complaints at all.
I agree I had a BMW 335i with the sport package and you felt every bump and pothole in the road. Drove my Model Y LR 2023 and it a big improvement over the BMW. The Honda Accord seems a little smoother, but it also dips on corners, the MY with weight stays flat and doesn't roll. I'll take the MY LR over my Honda except for the long trips in areas where the charging network still needs work. Most trips shouldn't be an issue MY. Just a little more time on the road.
My 2023 Y LR has parking sensors & comfort suspension. Fremont build quality was excellent, No panel gaps, Nothing loose, and No issues.
What was your vin? I take delivery tomorrow mine is also a Fremont build hope I have them too lol
@@ChasTucker When did you order?
@@aniketphatak951 about 4 days ago
Terrific video, review, and contributor!
I have a 2021 M3SR+ built in Fremont and I’m guessing I’m a lucky guy - no build issues, panel gaps solid, and the thing runs like a champ.
Looking at the 2020 and 2023 MY cars in the closing section of your video, I’m once again impressed that Tesla avoids the typical OEM approach of planned and intentional obsolescence. While there have been changes and modifications to their vehicles over time, the most essential component (software) is updated across the board. So unique and does not get enough praise or recognition for its radical departure from “the way we’ve always done it” business model that every other OEM uses.
Always a fun watch when I spend time in your channel. FYI, I’ll be sorry to see the pink wrap go.
I got the exact same car ( 2021 M3SR+) from Fremont and it has great build quality. I would say just don't take it if you don't like it. The one I rejected previous to that had a glue mark in interior, panel gap issues, and a/c fan noise.
One of the better Tesla video creators. Direct, concise, doesn't display his ego to the world.
For anyone wondering, I had a 2021 Model 3 with 18” wheels and recently went to a 2024 Model Y Performance…and the MYP rides MUCH better than the model 3. The comfort suspension really is a big difference
Thanks. Good information. My June 2020 MY has a terrible suspension and the opening and closing doors feels and sounds flimsy and cheap. All the new ones I have tried has much better feeling and ride quality (even prior to the October upgrade tested in this vid). The latest MY I checked out had door opening and closing as solid as any BMW, Audi or Merc I have ever felt. I was REALLY surprised and blown away by it. My neighbors July 2022 LR MY w 20 inch wheels also has a very good suspension feeling. Not in par with a BMW or Audi but good enough for me (I prefer a somewhat stiffer suspension - my current MY however is uncomfortable and feels cheap). I am very impressed to see Tesla's rapid progress.
Gjeebs, your deadpan delivery on the the Jeff Bezos joke was everything! LOL!
I was told the suspension on my July 2022 build PMY had a revised suspension. I can say the 2022 PMY rides better than my 2020 LR AWD.
I ordered the Unplugged Luxury coilover kit for my ‘23 MYP as well. While I can live with it, they deserve better than the factory suspension. The camera on the left has better resolution, color and contrast. Can’t offer more perspective than that since I’m looking at a video of a video through an iPhone. But the current camera is clearly better from where I’m sitting.
What are the differences you notice over factory? And is it really that much of a more plush/softer difference?
I just bought a lighty 2023 model y in Nardo grey wrap. It looks so stunning!! I cannot wait to get it this friday! 😍😍
I recently drove a 2023 Model Y P with the upgraded Tesla suspension. It was light years better than the original suspension on my 2021 Model Y LR. I did upgrade my suspension to the Unplugged Performance luxury suspension. The new Tesla suspension is noticeably better. I have my OEM tires. My wife has a 2019 Genesis G80. The new suspension is at least as good as that.
does 2023 model y Performance comes with Upgraded suspension too? I thought its only for non performance models !
Performance is not supposed to get the new comfort suspension.
I don’t know if it’s the comfort suspension but it is a definite upgrade from the 2021 suspension on my Model Y LR.
@@clsanders98 are you saying you prefer the '23 MYP suspension rather than Unplugged Performance Luxury Suspension? Looking forward to your answer as I'm taking the MYP delivery and was just about to order the Unplugged as well.
@@rafasuchodolski7955 I think the 23 MYP suspension is noticeably better. I recommend you don’t buy the UP suspension until you drive the MY.
I had the 21 Audi Q3 and the 21 MY, I think a better suspension does necessarily means softer, it's the way the suspension filters the impacts over bumps. For ex. The MY passes 100% impact of whats on the road into the cabin while Audi only passes abt 50%. And the Audi feels solid when going over bumps, not much of aftershock compared to the MY.
Nardo grey looks awesome- really like this combo.
me too. I might go grey next
@@Gjeebs where do we get the paint job from? the exact one
You should definitely make a video comparing model y long range and model y performance, so people who is confused about the 2023 model knows what’s getting changed and which should they pick.
Yes we need this!
@@Killyang ikr I’m here searching up all the differences between the two and comparing which is better what is getting changed is it worth it etc. If he do a video on it then other people like me don’t have to browse around and can get all the info they need from one channel and it can be an educational/guide video for people who are struggle to choose.
You read my mind! 🙌🏻
I'm going to rent a model while performance and put it to my model y long range with acceleration boost and see the difference
If suspension and noise is a concern I’d say test drive one… it’s the only way to know if it’s gonna be an issue for you. When I test drove them I did so in an area full of speed bumps and felt the suspensions worked great! I’d go w the 19 inch wheels for ride quality.
If you guys want a fast tesla, get the performance version, for 5k you get power, wheels, brakes, suspension. The 2k "boost" option is only a little power, nothing compared to performance. I wish i knew this before i ordered mine.
My ultrasonic sensors on 22 MYLR are still working. Could yours not be working due to the Pig wrap?
They did add double paned glass to the back windows atleast in the EU version of the car
I got a 2021 Tesla model y with full self-driving and pay for acceleration boost you think I'll be crazy to trade it in for a 2023 Tesla model y
you should put passengers in the rear seats to see if they get motion sick. that’s been the main problem with 3/y suspension the hard rebounds. sitting only in the front is not enough imo.
Gjeebs your ultrasonic sensors are still functional. Tesla has not removed the functionality of the USS in cars that have them.
Ahh! That's great to hear! I really count on that 24 inch distance gap showing on the visualization display.
I can confirm sensors are functional on my 2022 MYP too and I heard that Tesla would not remove this functionality. Running 2022.44.2.
Great to see the Y improving. Just waiting for the double pane in the rear and the matrix headlight.
I took delivery on 12/30 and my MYLR has the matrix headlights. FYI.
@@MikeKobb you probably got it from the Fremont factory, where they were using those temporarily until more of the regular headlights came in.
@@harrychufan It was built in Fremont, yes, in mid-December. I think it was less than two weeks old when I took delivery. Back when they started using the matrix headlights as a stopgap, it was supposed to be for quite a short time. So either that has stretched out longer, or they've made the switch over.
@@MikeKobb what was your vin?? I take delivery tomorrow I really hope mine has it too!
@@ChasTucker It’s in the 633,000 range. Good luck! Hope you get them as well.
The ultrasonic sensors definitely work still. Maybe your wrap is blocking it?
Same here , work like a cream
Yeah, if it's not working is the wrap.
either wrap or my settings. I will look into it
I’m on 2022.44.2 and confirm sensors still work
My sensors work perfect and I’d be extremely disappointed if Tesla decided to “switch them off”, it’s very likely the wrap if they aren’t working.
i just picked one up and the suspension sucks, it feels like driving a yellow school bus - what am i doing wrong
I have a 2021 MY LR with 20" wheels, finding the ride too firm. Need new tires anyway so thinking about these options:
#1. Replace Good Year Eagle F1 OEM tires with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 (not 4S) with acoustic inserts ($1,995 @ Discount Tire)
#2. Order TS Sportline 18" wheel/tire package with Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 for $3,100 (that's their only tire option)
#3. Blow the budget with new tires AND Unplugged Luxury Coilovers (probably $6K or so all in with installation)
Any recommendations? Thanks!
About Model Y Performance 2023, I test drove a 2022 MYP and a 2023 MYP back to back on the same stretch of street and freeway, I can confidently say, the 2023 MYP has the Comfort suspension as well, which makes a pleasant difference. Love it so much we bought the 2023 MYP knowing it does not have USS for close range object detection. Parking in tight space has become difficult. However suspension is more important as you feel it at every moment while driving!
Hopefully they allow some sort of program to let you get the new USS installed if they end up releasing a new system. Glad to hear they improved the suspension since a lot of people complain about it being too rough.
why don't they have the USS range object detection? which model has the USS close object detection ?
Thanks so much for explaining that! Does it hold true no matter where it's assembled?
I guess I got to test drive a 2023 cuz my 2021 model y that thing rides smooth bumps I don't feel at all just ride smooth
@@pitech4446 My 2021 still has the USS sensors I don't think I have radar but it still tell me when I'm close to objects and everything else like that
I have the 2023 4680 structural pack and front/rear castings, and I feel those aspects along with the new suspension components add to the overall feel and experience. IMO
The 2023 handles even better especially if you load it. So it will ve even better with some people on board or some luggage
I received model Y Feb 2023 new. Ride quality is not bad but it is not like VW ID4. The rattling noise from rearseat headrest and rear seat itself is really bad. On some rough roads, the front dashboard also rattles little bit sounding like thin plastic. It is hard to underdtand why such a high tech company can not fix this kind of simple issue. I hope Tesls would add more foams or rubbners where it is needed. I am sure Tesla will correct these issues in no time because it is not hard. I hope Tesla would notify me to take my car to Tesla Service to get it fixed for free pretty soon.
Great honest and funny review. Thanks I was wishing that Tesla would improve ride comfort
Not true your comment. many ground up BEV platforms from other oems have heavy batteries on the floor and still offer a fantastic and comfortable ride without air. i’m currently reviewing the IONIQ 6 and it is a way nicer ride in comfort than my 2020 model 3 with MPP comfort kit suspension replacement. and it still turns on a dime.
I have a MY LR (ab) on 19’s … the ride is much better than the X5 that I owned before.
My 2023 Tesla Model Y Long Range made in China does have all four windows double paned. I had a 2021 before and this new car is quieter, smoother and better built than the 2021 version.
We drove across country in our Model Y - autopilot made the trip easy and safer. Recommend taking the Y for the trip.
Never took a road trip in my model why always took it into my model 3 but one of these days I'm looking to take a road trip in the y I bet it be comfortable
I just test drove a 2023 MY Performance and was blown away by how comfortable the ride is compared to my 2021 MY LR with 20" wheels
Also, the newer MY also has carpeting in the rear door openings that used to be plastic as well as carpeting in the door binnacles (mine are all plastic w no carpet liner).
I like how that old dude is just letting you rant while he sits there. I would road trip with that old timer any day. 😂😂😂😂
Gjeebs - the PLAID Apex interior is from Franz Holtzhousen wife who now sells Custom LEATHER interiors for S3XY cars.
Love teslas! I have a 21 M3P… but it’s hard to beat the ride comfort if a Mercedes glc! Love that car!
I wish tesla would sell after market 1080p camera for backup camera
Video starts at 5:34
I wish someone would do this in northeast where the road quality is atrocias
Nice to see in video how dark limo tint is. 35% is probably more acceptable as you mentioned. Thanks
Where are you driving that the roads are so nice? Over here in LA the roads are trash everywhere.
I took delivery of my Model Y long range with 19" wheels in December - the biggest complaint I have is how some road bumps are a bit jarring and not as isolated from the passengers as it should be - the front of the car chassis seems solid but it's the rear chassis section that shudders and is I believe the source of the jarring and thumping noises
wow man same car here, i thought the 19in would be reasonable comfortable but it is pretty rough. I am coming from a 2014 camry and miss the marmellowy ride. There seems to be more noise coming from the back than in the front. Im not sure if I should try different tires to see if that will help
Great video. FINALLY someone commented on and made a video about the new suspension! Continue the great content!
Great video! That bardo color grey is awesome!! Tesla definitely needs the 360 view and heads up display. IMO, I would still get the performances model. I prefer performance over noise and slightly bumper. He made the right choice with the model Y ⚡️👍

Nardo.
Great review and comparison. My only feedback is that every time you start touching on the quality of the suspension, you go on tangents about others. It would be good if you stayed more on topic and saved the tangents for later.
I apologize if this was covered in an earlier post. Your ultrasonic sensors are being covered by your wrap. I had the same issue with my 2022 pre-owned MY from a clear bra. I was happy that the previous owner put on a clear bra, but, they forgot to cut out the holes for the ultrasonic sensors. After I had it fixed, it worked as expected.
thanks for video! I love to hear the differences from previous model. Thank you x100 !!
I thought it was Jeff Bezos in the passenger seat
Very professional review. Really covered the points that I wanted to know. Very interested in the ride comfort improvements, and if the new ones now being delivered in the UK have the improved ride then I'm now interested. Thanks.
In continental europe, they come with the old suspension. You should confirm this with Tesla UK before place the order.
Finally drove a 2023 MY w/ Comfort Suspension and I immediately could tell it’s night and day compared to my Mid ‘21 MYLR - damn!
We definitely need the 360 view !! I used it frequently on my X5 come-on @elon !
3D max spyder is the most OP carpet hands down
The Citroen Xantia Activa had soft suspension that stiffened up in corners under braking and under acceleration. It can be done.
To bad you didn’t make a comparison between your unplugged performance suspension en the 2023 one. I drove the 2023 model and I would say it is 10% better, but unfortunately still a harsh ride. A pity that Tesla still doesn’t have any adaptive suspensions. For me that is the way to go for EV’s who are not suited (cost & maintenance wise) for air suspensions.
I agree adaptable suspension would be great
@@Gjeebs so does your tesla drives softer with UP suspension, than 2023 Model Y?
Oh yeah and the white one is a bird magnet too! I swear as soon as I wash it the birds attack it by bombing their birdturds and stain the paint!
My 2020 Model Y long range ultrasonic sensors still works!
I love that grey! For the road trip I think it comes down to time. I have done it a few times from D.C. to LA in a gas power car and in a Tesla. The Tesla does take more time without question however having autopilot made it so much more enjoyable. It's possible to sleep in a tesla and if you don't mind staying at an RV park you can wake up with a full charge and you still have access to rest rooms for a lot cheaper than a hotel.
Does it matter for you how much hotel cost If you bought Tesla for 60K?
Nonsense!!! Some people just wants to reach their destinations as fast as possible and that’s why diesel cars are sooo popular in Europe/Germany because you don’t just cruise at higher speeds but on better roads.
@@michaelestrinone2111 - There’s reasons why people can afford a $60k car. They don’t waste money. They buy what they value.
@@brawnbenson552 : I agree, I bought model 3 in 2018, was waiting at night for 10 hours in line to signup.
I drove OC to SF recently and you're right. Using AP made it seem so much shorter and easier, even in rain.
riding with Jeff Bezos
I'm just guessing here, but having been a software developer since before the IBM PC, Tesla probably didn't want to deal with a variant of software that handles USS and a different variant that doesn't. Microsoft went with too much backward compatibility and suffered with "spaghetti code" for a long time. I give Tesla major cred for making that choice and I'll just trade in once they put that HD radar in, add those cameras in the headlight nacelle, put the HW4 package in and whatever else. And great to hear that the suspension upgrade works even though I probably won't notice it on the potholed and gravel backroads I drive. Cheers and drive safely.
Crap!!!! It also makes tesla looks like garbage! They have features that other cars have had for decades!
Why can’t they simply add adaptative suspensions!? What about 360 view and many other features or custom configurations!?
Appreciate the insight on this comment!
You suggest that the battery may contribute to a harsh ride. But, what about Gigacastings? I suggest that the stiffness of the front and rear gigacastings make the ride more harsh.
Gigacasting only comes from MY Austin, not Fremont.
I find chill mode is a more comfortable drive setting, as you say the faster you accelerate the more you feel the bumps. My views on the removal of USS is a big mistake, it might be acceptable in the US but in the UK, specifically in London where we have small roads and limited parking spaces often you have to squeeze in to spaces, the USS are essential for some of us, especially while Tesla vision isn't even live. Great video overall.
For the record I hardly use chill mode lol can’t resist that burst of power but definitely smoother
I totally agree with you regarding the Ultra Sonic Sensors, but I live in Canada and we have lots of space. I was just about to buy a new Model Y but now I’m shopping for something else. Sorry Tesla, you lost a customer.

So almost no mention of the actual suspension feel?
The Polestar 3 is going to give the Y & X a run for its money. Their air suspension is standard with active dampers and dual volume air springs each with 2 chambers. It's adjusting every 2-milliseconds and you're not compromising the performance. Would love to see you do a video on it!
…give Y a run for its money? Not at $80k for a polestar 3.

Wouldn’t be hard.
They switched from Sony to Samsung. Particularly noticeable on the side view cameras.
In regards to differences in cameras, the main difference between the 2020 and 2023 shot was there was a man in the background in the 2020 shot and no man in the 2023. Did I get it right?
Your commentary during the entire video was perfect!! Great video!
Really struggling to decide between a Model Y LR vs Performance. Main priorities are being able to sleep in it, travel throughout the western USA, and highway driving comfort.
Can you get a hold of a rivian and provide a review?
Check out Ryan Shaw's channel. He's got an R1T along with his Tesla. Just did a video on the problems he's had after owning for a couple months. Previously did a video on charging while on a road trip; horrible charging problems due to non-Tesla charging ecosystem,
Yes I will in January for Feb
My Austin 2023 LR Y has incredible suspension
You hired Jeff Bezos as your side kick? Way to go!!
I ride and own the new Model YLR. 19” wheels. If this is comfort then I‘m really happy I didn’t get the older model because then I would have returned the car immediately. The suspension work fine only on excellent smooth roads. They really suck and make the term luxury car not relevant. BTW all the after market small accessories should have been included as they would have less than 150$ to the original price, while adding more smiles to long-waiting buyers.
GJEEBS: So there is a new "model comfort" suspension ⁉ Can we retro-add this to our March 2022 Ys ⁉
Ask!
@@Gjeebs Will let you know if I hear anything 😊
you might want to drive other bevs in the market to see very nice rides.
Yes I have driven all of them
We have the Fremont 2021 and 2023 model Y, noticeable difference in ride quality.
Very helpful ride review!
Nice igloo cooler in the back... fun
Changed my performance tires on my 2021 model Y and the difference is night and day. Also I brought those 3D mats on your recommendations and I love them.
What kind wheels did you put on your Performance?
@@saeedusI put Michelin's pilot sports all seasons 275/35ZR21 103W extra load in the rear and 255's in the front the ride difference was so noticeable that I thought something was wrong I couldn't believe that the oem performance tires were that stiff now I enjoy my Y that much more. I love the look of the 21'S and I refused to go to a smaller tire. Purchase from tire rack but it was hard to find a shop that knew how to jack up a Tesla and had the pucks to do it properly the shops tire rack recommended were horrible except one which I went with but I brought the pucks because the shop couldn't find theirs.
When you say night and day, are you referring to the suspension being better?
@@economicdevelopmentplannin8715 The ride is and quietness is better, if you drive the Y performance with the all seasons and the performance tires it'll be a major difference no need to up grade the suspension in my opinion the car rides and handles incredible to me and I owned a 2015 SRT and a 2017 2SS. And the road noise in the 2SS was horrible.
@@saeedus I kept my OEM wheels.
I happened to stumble across one of your older(earlier)vtec videos... wow, congratulations on great continuous content 👍🏾
haha nice! I miss my Si
Wow you really have your way aroung people. Kudos to you and Craig.
I didnt hear you compare the new Tesla Suspension VS the Unplugged you have. Thinking of upgrading, wondering if its worth it.
