Sinking of the MS Estonia

- MS Estonia was a cruiseferry built in 1980 at the West German shipyard Meyer Werft in Papenburg. In 1993, she was sold to Nordström & Thulin for use on Estline's Tallinn-Stockholm route. The ship's sinking on 28 September 1994, in the Baltic Sea between Sweden, Finland and Estonia, was one of the worst maritime disasters of the 20th century, claiming 852 lives.
The official report concluded that the bow door had separated from the vessel, pulling the ramp ajar. The ship was already listing because of poor cargo distribution, and the list increased rapidly, flooding the decks and the cabins. Shortly, power failed altogether, inhibiting search and rescue, and a full-scale emergency was not declared for 90 minutes. Of the 989 on board, 138 were rescued. The report criticised the passive attitude of the crew, failing to notice that water was entering the vehicle deck, delaying the alarm, and providing minimal guidance from the bridge.

Quite possibly one of the most terrifying sinkings ever
Yes no lights and trapped in your cabin half filled with water becouse a shelf blocked the door and people flying into tge walls becouse the list
i think wilhem gustloff is the most terrifying
I definitely would must rather be on Titanic.
I remember the morning when it came on the news. Yes, it happened very fast - in the space of half an hour or so, at midnight and in near storm conditions. Some of those who survived had to kick at and step on other people to fight their way out of the doomed ship and up to the open deck, climbing up steep stairways that were already listing 40 degrees and near-constantly moving. Very unsettling and controversial with many people to this day.
I would definetly take titanic over this. People were slammed to death inside the ship and trapped knowing that they will die
This is the most horrifying sinking to me. VERY little time to react, even if you were strong/fast/sober/young there was still no guarantee that you would make it out. I imagine the central stairwell like one of those surrealist paintings except people viciously attacking each other to attempt to climb out of it.
No offense but then what? The ship going down could easily take you down the ocean. Even if it didn't I wish anyone the best. Scary.
@@David-nu6kw shut up
Wilhelm Gustloff was probably the most horrific. Three torpedoes, and 10,000 women and children drowning to death in a pitch black, freezing ocean
@@VAHOSS I have sympathy for children and adult people. Not especially just for women.
I feel the same, no matter how capable and decisive they were most people still ended up waiting for that cold black water ro take them simple because they happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Excellent animation. Would love a realtime sinking using these same assets.
1:15 Imagining having to fight your way through that hallway, with hundreds of other screaming panicked people...
I suspect some passengers drowned in their beds, never waking.
@@Foldy435the moment freezing water touches you, you're awake. Nobody slept through that
It's horrible to imagine what it was like inside the ship
Horror film energy
Shelves and tables flying around people trapped in cabins people smacking the walls never to rise again and no lights were the words a man who was on the ship said
The sad truth is that the ship wasn't designed for sailing on the wide open sea - it had been built in 1980 (as "Viking Sally") for the route between Stockholm and Finland, a route that's protected by archipelagos nearly all the way, with no wide expanses of fully open water, so you don't get the same kind of heavy waves up there - and also, the ship was badly constructed (much like Herald of Free Enterprise and Scandinavian Star) and not in a great condition by 1994, for lack of upkeep. She plainly wasn't seaworthy for a ride across the open Baltic Sea in rough weather, but with bribes and some goodwill. you can get past such considerations...
@@louise_rose forget dude, everybody knows it was something else involved, 2 years ago a group of explorers found out abig 1m hole on the starboard of the ship. it was designed for sailing in wide open sea, no problem with that at all
There is currently a press briefing going on relating to the latest investigation of the Estonias wreck. The conclusion of the investigation was that the Estonia was not seaworthy to operate the route between Tallinn and Stockholm.
This was shortly after Estonia regained its independence, after the breakup of the USSR. Decades of lax attitudes fostered by Soviet rule and corruption likely were a factor. Estonia has come a long way since, and now its ferries operate under very stringent safety regulations.
@@mikeprevost8650 You don't see this bow visor design on many blue water ferries now. Most commonly clamshell. A family friend was a WW2 veteran who took several LSTs across the Atlantic. He had a strong dislike of any aperture at the bow of a ship. Said on many crossings the LST bow doors had to be welded closed in heavy weather. The sea doesn't care.
Another two changes on modern ro-ro ferries that came as a result of both this and Herald of Free Enterprise, are that the bow doors are higher above the water, meaning that even if they are compromised, water is less likely to get in, and that the car decks are divided into watertight compartments.
Very well done animation, the bit around 1:15 was terrifying
I just realized- there are rusted cars still in the Estonia- just sitting there, slowing rotting away...
That’s amazing! I have never seen such a great animation! Also, the last 10 seconds ( 2:23 ) were a really nice touch.
The hallway animations were really great
eerie and excellent . Well done in conveying the message of how she sank with animation.
Superb video as always!
Your animations are superb!
Hey man! I am working on a video about 10 of the worst shipwrecks and am including an entry about the MS Estonia. This animation you made is fantastic, and I was wondering if I could use it in my video? I would provide credit both on-screen and a link in the description. Let me know! Thank you:)
Ofcorse!
@@caljucotcas Thanks a bunch!! Video will be published in a few weeks from now :)

Very well done!
Fantastic animation and great sound effects.Terrifying scenes, the panic you would feel trying to escape is real. Knowing you're in a cold wild ocean with nowhere to go would be horrific.😭💔
Thank You!
@@caljucotcas Thank you for all your effort and great content. I love ships and aeroplanes they fascinate me so much.
That was a great animation!
Hello and nice job love from Sweden
Perfect animation 👍👍
Perfect animation, but here’s the real sinking
It listed to starboard when it was capsizing it started to sink by stern and the ship did go down
Very cool animation!
Amazing simulation of the ship sinking
Those poor people never had a chance R.I.P
I am editing a tv show in The Netherlands about the Estonia, is it maybe possible to use your animation in it? (With credit)
Imagine being caught in a cabin feeling the boat going down. 😱😭💔
perfect animation👌
Next videos, is it possible to make same kind video about common area (deck 4 etc.) when the capsizing happen
Like they say we dont know what we dont know. Ultimately the ship was not fit for the potential harsh conditions. Scary.
Have to say that the theory might not be true atleast no estonian believes this and what confirms theory is big hole was found in the ship that could have been caused by submarine or explosives considering that an suspicious truck came on board at the very last minute. And survivors are telling also it was not the visor and if it was an submarine or explosive it was done by russia
@@Europe88979There WAS no big hole on the ship. The visor is missing because it fell off. There were no explosions.
All of this conspiracy nonsense is inappropriate and downright insensitive to the people who died, and they died because of negligence, nothing more and nothing less. The MV Estonia was poorly managed, poorly serviced, and not fit for the job it was given and this negligence and recklessness by the Estonia's owners and operators cost many innocent people (including children) their lives
The wave sounds are so relaxing
Good video! I wonder what's coming next.
This was a horrible tragedy the amount of bodys that went down with the ship is scary....
Only few have been located
Nice animation! Maybe make it night next time with a moon, or stormy weather so it looks a bit more realistic!
Congratulations on getting 100k
Thanks❤️
I’ve wanted to ask. Why are most of your sinking ship videos in the past been in the daytime?
because i dont like that noise on videos what i get when its dark outside.
Ok thanks
The scuba video where you see legs and the upper torso of a young woman is the most haunting things that I’ve ever seen.
Wait.... isnt it banned for scuba divers to go there.. And put it on the internet?
@@dragonlukasmapping805 They were professional divers who went down to recover bodies
@@Grandizer8989 Was this from a more recent dive? Because last I heard 2 people got arrested for going down there, as it's illegal for ANY kind of operation to be had at this wreck due to it being considered a mass grave.

Excellent! Do titanic II Sinking. I subscribed
Id never feel comfortable on a boat where the nose...which takes some of the most severe pressure in rough seas... isn't 100% built solid into the structure of the boat. I'm surprised such a design was signed off on and wonder if other boats are built like that.
Most ferrys are built like that. There are very few exceptions. But the mechanisms holding the front door were made stronger on modern ferries
At least 15 vessels of the Nordic ferry fleet experienced structural damage of their Bow Visors between 1973-94.
There is one thats bow opens up still operating by the name of rosella for the swedish company viking line the original owner of the ms estonia
The rest of the ships in their fleets bows open to the sides which is a much safer design
How impossible it was to survive : It was way worse than the titanic even my dads old friend died there
in MS Estonia?
@@leonardofur3518 No, in the Titanic...

Vanal lintmakil. Lindid on endiselt alles, neid on päris mitu. Võib-olla on seal ka midagi, mida ei ole kuskil mujal salvestatud. Millalgi plaanin uuesti üle kuulata.
While upside down and drowing, I might have suddenly remembered I was aboard a ship with a removable bow.
You wouldn't have made the distance to the opening from the flooded stateroom decks in one breath and the power went out before the ship was even finished rolling over, due to the sudden drop in oil pressure.
You telling me you could swim ~200 feet in one breath, navigate a maze of corridors and stairwells in pitch blackness, safely swim your way through a flooded cargo hold of multiple vehicles being slammed around by the ship's movements and avoid being crushed, and make it to the open bow?
That's not what dude meant.
Stop nerding out with the pure Aught Tism when you don't even have the emotional intelligence to understand other people.
Spastic nerd.
@@pc_buildyb0i935 I almost didn't have the heart to disappoint you after the lengthy reply by explaining I meant I wouldn't have gotten aboard in the first place.
This is hysterical haha
@@roccosiffredi6900 Very smart edit ;)
This is the most terrifying sinking I've ever seen
Ye it had many deaths
The ship dissappeared of radar 27 minutes after the first radio transmission. The sinking had 137survivors and 852 never saw the earth again
This gives me so much anxiety 😥
Not sure why so many people died. If I had been on that ship, the second I sensed something was wrong I would have used my ring hand to punch through my cabin window so I could jump into the sea, leaving my wife and children behind. Then I would have used my years of triathlon experience to swim the 22 nautical miles to the Finnish island of Utö in the Turku archipelago.
Interesting 😌
You would die prob bcs of the temperature of the water and also vcs there was a storm.
@@PatrickPierceBateman ok
Ask Paul Allen what he would've done
you sure you can do that?
Jeez this animation gives me anxiety. Great animation tho :)
I think of those lads on the bridge working the radio with _Silja Europa,_ holding on while you can actually hear things falling over in the background. Absolutely awful.
To think that this actually happened. And how everyone onboard was helpless to do anything with how little time they had to react.
Finnish newspapers Iltasanomat and Iltalehti reports that Estonia's wreck leaks fuel into the sea.
Yup, they said the same in Estonian news
nice
How many people died?
852
Estonia is completely capable of sinking itself
God bless all that poor people 🙏🙏🙏
Doesn't seem to me like God did much blessing here. That's a horrifying and terrible way to die
The ship that sunk too fast
Cool and sad 😭
Terrifying
So what you're saying is… The front fell off?
Yes
Estonia was a passenger car ferry and had openable stern or back and bow or front sections to get cars in. In 1994 estonias bow visor came of do to high waves and bad welding with the waves soon opening the car ramp and huge amounts of water rushing in quickly listing the ship to a 30-40 degree angle. The sinking ended 852 people and out of 989 137 survived

Why can't they have stern doors instead? Surely it would be safer and younsimply load from the back instead
