  • When Kelly and her favorite rescued Walt, he would barely make eye contact with anyone. He was scared to come into the house and would stare at the wall for hours. Now he finally feels at home and has turned into the most playful little menace.

      We had a Boxer/Lab mix (she's been gone for a few years now due to lymphoma, but we still miss her) who, when we first got her, wouldn't come anywhere near me and my dad but she warmed right up to my mom. That led us to believe that she had previously been abused or neglected by a man. But once she understood that none of us were going to hurt her, she became a total sweetheart (and she was deceptively smart as well). She wouldn't beg or whine for scraps while we were eating dinner, she'd just put her head on your lap and look up at you. She was also the most passive and laid-back dog I've ever known, and I've known a lot of dogs in my life, she would literally allow our Jack Russel to take food right out of her mouth, and not once did she show any sign of aggression (she never even bared her teeth at anyone). She was a bit shy around people she was unfamiliar with (especially men), but once she was used to you she was incredibly friendly and loved being petted and scratched.

      @@gamester512 I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I've experienced losing animals that were feral and just tried my best to save them but unfortunately one gave in to the anaesthetic. Another kitten had an awful prolapse that could not be fixed even though I told the vet I'm willing to pay whatever bill it comes to, he responsibly advised against that. The worst part is their cries never go away, they are haunting in many ways. All we can do though is to give them all our love and understand that when we take them in we are responsible to do whatever is required to keep them healthy and to live long.

      I simply cannot understand it. I'm not the biggest pet person... I just adopt other peoples' pets because I don't currently have my own house where I can easily have a pet, a yard for a dog to go run around and slap in a doggy door...

      @mehere8038 Před 3 lety +2

      @@SweetChicagoGator well well done surviving! Shame you're the only one though :(
      Not sure on similar, cause parakeets can refer to a range of birds, including lorikeets, from what I understand though in the US it mostly refers to budgies? If that's what you mean, then pretty different :)
      Lorikeets are nectar eaters ie their entire diet is sugar. Think of what a child that eats only sugar is like & that's what you get in lorikeets lol VERY hyperactive, outgoing, boisterous birds! They also poop just liquid muck that is basically glue & they think it's funny to poop on their walls instead of the floor & everywhere else they can. They're often called "the clowns of the bird world". They're very smart & they figure out what gets a reaction very quickly & repeat & expand on just for fun. They'll do things like physics experiments, if you drop a piece of lettuce out of the cage door onto the floor, what does it do? Now how about a grape, lets try that & see if it does the same thing, how about turning around & pooping out the door? & they really do watch them falling & landing in curiosity too & then often follow up by squarking at you to come & pick them up for them after dropping every item from their cage onto the floor outside it.
      Mine also figured out that breadsticks/rusks I gave them to chew on, but designed to be too hard to just eat in full, could be dunked in water to soften for easy eating lol They drop dried fruit in water so it will expand over time too & they LOVE the sound of their own voices & they love calling to wild birds, making sure the call is loud enough for wild birds to hear - normally right when they're near your ear & they know what they're doing! & they LOVE water!!!!! Have a look at some lorikeet bath videos if you want to see that! & if not given baths regularly enough in their minds, they'll climb into their water dish, or at least stick their head into it & empty it
      Put simply, they're very intelligent & active & kinda a nightmare, but also really great fun & very entertaining :) I have had budgies before too, but only as a child, lorikeets I would say in summary are smarter & more confident & outgoing & mischievous and MUCH louder! Budgies are still really awesome little friends to have though, I love them for that! MUCH calmer & more reserved than lorikeets are!
      & again, glad you managed to survive that childhood & hope you've had 40 odd years of good life since then :) I grew up in a pretty messed up home too, so I can relate :) (and actually my 2 lorikeets I have were rescues from a bad home too, they had nearly a decade of neglect & isolation, so now they're really learning to love & explore & enjoy life :)) Very rewarding. When they arrived, they knew nothing but sitting alone in a tiny cage, eating their daily food & self mutilating by ripping out all their own feathers & screaming & then being told to shut up & having things thrown at their cage if they didn't. Now they're in together, in an open cage with heaps of toys & a huge range of foods to eat or play with & allowed out of the cage to explore anytime they feel confident enough to do that (which is increasing) & they're just clearly becoming happier & happier in themselves & also learning that now people won't hurt them & can be good :)

      Yup. Got my one Papillon at 6, and she's 12 now. She was from a puppy mill and had been bred until she physically couldn't be any longer. Her front arms are messed up from the crate or from people grabbing her, and she had to have spinal surgery last year due to all the issues.
      She doesn't let us touch her without panic. You brush against her without her seeing you and she will literally jump in the air and run as fast as she can. There are places we can pet her (like her crate) but she cowers in fear while you do it, and will run from you otherwise. But then you bring out a treat or she sees a leash and she acts like a normal dog, jumping and wagging her tail. You ring the doorbell and she starts barking and jumping around. It's been hard but it's the little things. She bonded with my other Papillon to where she is literally dependent on her, and that's fine with me. She is living life how she needs to now.
      Edit: fixed some spots where my wording was confusing because I ramble. 😀

    Fortunately, dogs seem to be much more resilient than we humans are, in over-coming abuse and emotional trauma. It's heart-breaking to imagine what Walt must have endured before being rescued. It takes a caring person (and persistence) to make them understand they are loved and wanted.

      @ If that were true dogs wouldn't show any signs of past trauma/being traumatized. But many of them do. And many are badly affected by past drama and abuse. So what you said really ain't true.
      If it takes some kind of "treatment" to get over the past then it ain't true that they are (in your words) "Cognitively incapable to dwell in the past."
      And many of them will stay "traumatized" if they don't get that "treatment" Even if that trauma is in their past
      Plus the idea that they don't have a sense of self-awareness is an ideal from the past.

Dogs, cats, & other domesticated animals have feelings this person doesn't. I've seen many cases of critters that were abused due to people not knowing any better &/or not careing.
      Back in the 1950s until 1970 my parents kept our dogs on chains because they couldn't afford to fence in the backyard. After I went off to college they: 1) fenced the yard; 2) carpeted the house - much to my regret; & 3) put in central AC. I came home to a very happy red dachshund who was running around HIS backyard like a puppy, at the ripe old age of 7. He lived till 1980 while I was overseas getting married. We didn't know keeping the dogs on a chain was bad. We just loved them & didn't want out nutcase neighbor to shoot them for stepping a paw on his yard or to get run over. Big difference is our dogs knew they were loved, fed plus given fresh water daily, cared for via baths & vet visits. Our dogs were not tramatized.

I got on my knees, in the middle of my living room floor, and started praying. I was in tears, eyes closed, the next thing I felt is her furry head just on me, comforting me. I broke. I started crying even harder, and she just nuzzled next to me and loved on me. I just hugged her and thanked her. She changed me. Kizzy became my beautiful companion. @@basementtunes, yes, you raise a good point. However, humans being kind to other humans is expected. It is the norm although, as we all know, that expectation is not always achieved. However, when we show love and kindness to an abused and vulnerable animal, it does tend to illustrate some of our best qualities. And, from a biological standpoint, humans are also animals -- so it could apply there is well. Nonetheless, your point is not lost on me. I respect your opinion.

    • @basementtunes
      @basementtunes Před 3 lety +1

      @@matthewmcdermit8744 And I respect yours. Of course the expectation is not always achieved as we are all individuals; just as all animals have unique personalities. On a side note, I do find often find it sad as an animal lover, to I see so many humans way more concerned about how animals are treated than how we treat each-other. It's actually disheartening to think the measure of being a good person is how we treat animals when so many of these same animal lovers don't have this kind of compassion for their human brothers and sisters when they are abused and treated badly. Have a great day.

    • @matthewmcdermit8744
      @matthewmcdermit8744 Před 3 lety

      @@basementtunes, your point is valid. . . . The dichotomy occurs, I think, because there is a greater expectation for humans to do more for themselves. Whereas for animals, they usually have less capacity to do for themselves. They are often more vulnerable. For example, I have seen videos of cats or dogs trapped along busy highways. Again, there is a greater expectation for a human to figure that situation out, while a dog or cat is much more vulnerable. . . . That dichotomy is surely more complex, but I think there is some truth in that.

Until I remember lots of kids didn’t grow up with dogs and missed out on learning true compassion and responsibility from that young age. Volunteering at animal shelters should be required at all schools every year cuz it’ll only do good in the world.

They started as wolves that formed a bond with ancient man in a mutually beneficial relationship and we fine tuned it over the years to suit our needs and wants. That doesn’t mean the other creatures don’t deserve a good life however when predatory animals need to feed their young it’s often with the meat of other animals.
