    Thank you for sharing your implant experience. My son who was implanted at the age of 6 years old and 1999, that was the best decision that we did as a family. He is now 30 years old and with a lot a lot of speech therapy. he now has an amazing life. He works for the town that we live in went to college graduate high school. I never limit him to anything I always told him just because you were born hearing impaired doesn’t mean you can’t reach for the stars so I’m so happy to see that you get to cochlea implant. Unfortunately he could only get one since he has 10% hearing on the right ear which is equivalent to a plane taking off we all know that we feel the planes taking off. Again, thank you for sharing your story. Looking forward to when they turn on your other implant. God bless you.🤟🏼

    Hi Brian. I reached out in the comments in another one of your videos. I had my left ear CI implanted at Sunnybrook on the 25th of January, 2024. Thanks for sharing your experiences with post surgical issues. I had a really bad vertigo attack as I was leaving Sunnybrook that lasted about an hour and thankfully not much longer than that. My left ear certainly feels numb so it’s nice to know that the numbness will likely go away. Also had the sore throat but like you said it wasn’t too bad. I had tiniitus before and it’s about the same . Now I’m just waiting a month for my activation and my only worry is that I’ll get clarity of speech as my SSHL resulted in very distorted and garbled speech so I’m really hoping I get clarity back. I’ll find out Feb 27,24. Thanks again for your sharing.

It's amazing the technology works and I can actually hear sound with the deaf ear. However, due to the poor quality of the sound, I find it to be almost useless. My tinnitus seems a little better. In general it's annoying to listen to. Voices sound like someone who has inhaled helium but distorted as though listening to it underwater. Music sounds horrible and background noises are very shrill and annoying. So far no adjustments have really helped.

    That’s exciting to hear you experienced environmental sounds you’d not previously ever heard! It’s truly miraculous.
    My father in law had cochlear implant sx about 10 days ago.
    He was pretty much totally deaf, but had minimal hearing with aids on both ears.
    My concern is that he claims he *cannot* hear *anything* starting at a week after the sx, even with his hearing aid on the one ear that does not have the implant. He can’t hear a thing now, where as before, he could hear somewhat with his hearing aids.
    He is 86 and has been mostly deaf for over 20 years (or longer). He lost most of his hearing due to being in artillery in the army for several decades. He is going in for an appointment tomorrow, but I have become quite concerned since he has not been able to hear a bit out of his left ear since Monday.
    Would you think it is normal to completely lose hearing in both ears after this procedure?
    Thank you for any insight you can provide.

    • @BrianJohns
      @BrianJohns  Před 5 lety +1

      Without my external processors, I cannot hear a thing out of either ear. It is common for cochlear implant surgery to destroy a person's residual hearing (on the implanted side). Has he had the surgery on both sides? I'm guessing that he has not been activated yet?

    • @happilyavaafter
      @happilyavaafter Před 5 lety +1

      Brian, thank you so much for your quick response. I appreciate it!
      He had no hearing at all in his left ear, so they decided to do the implant on that one (nothing to lose, they said), although I was surprised they recommended the surgery, given his age; it’s just tough for such an elderly person to be under general anesthesia, but he fared ok, and went home the same day, just as you.
      He will be activated around the first of February. Five days after sx, he woke up and couldn’t hear anything out of either ear.
      I hope they can puzzle this out. It might simply be that that last little bit of hearing diminished, coincidentally, nonetheless.

    I’ve gone through the evaluation for a CI and been cleared for my right ear. I declined the surgery at this time for a couple of reasons. First was that my main interest in the CI was for hearing in noisy situations and for better appreciation of music. The audiologists I worked with at Stanford,as well as the surgeon,all said that there would not be much of a improvement,if any, from a CI. The second reason is I’m rather superstitious. I had abdominal surgery in 2004 and again in 2010. I had surgery to remove a malignant lesion from my kidney in 2016. The CI would have been performed in 2022. Everything six years apart. I wanted to break that cycle. LOL. I’m going for my annual hearing test in March, so we’ll see what the results are. If there’s any degradation in my right ear, we’ll have to take another look at the CI surgery.

I can’t hear anything out of that side and my left side isn’t so bad but things are muffled. Hearing loss in both ears as well as being Deaf on my right. They cleaned my ears last month with my left ear being fine and hardly anything in my right. They also looked over my papers and confirmed both sides do have hearing loss, if they can’t find anything then they want to do some images. Does that mean an MRI or CT scan?? I’m not nervous, just curious as to how they would do that.

Here’s my question… how can her family best support her as she goes through the adaptation process?

    • @BrianJohns
      @BrianJohns  Před rokem +3

      Thanks for watching the video and for your question. My answer to your question is as follows:
      1. Don't expect a miracle. There is a high likelihood that she will not comprehend much at the beginning. Her brain will take a while to adjust to the CI sound. I went through the same thing.
      2. She may indicate that the sounds are robotic or weird. That's normal and to be expected at the beginning. The sounds will become more natural over time.
      3. My speech comprehension without lipreading is much better than before CIs. That said, I still depend heavily on lipreading. That will never change. If your daughter is a lipreader, she will probably stay that way. Expecting her to comprehend speech without lipreading might be too much pressure.
      In short, giving her time and space would be the best way to support her. I hope that the surgery goes well for her. Thanks for dropping by!

    I am deaf, and wear two cochlear Implants, since 13 years, iam 14years old

  • @rtxrt73
    @rtxrt73 Před 4 lety +1

    I just got my right ear implanted at the beginning of March (it's the only ear I could hear out of since I was born deaf in my left ear). Luckily for me I don't have any vertigo, but man oh man do I have tinnitus! I would definitely add that to this list to be honest, plus the feeling of fullness in the ear as swelling and fluid subside. But the first few days post surgery whenever I would lay down the fluid in my inner ear would level out and cause this tinnitus that sounded like a pressure cooker about to bust. It was definitely scary, but I was able to reach out to my surgeon and determine it was normal.. one last thing I would also add is to make sure if you are a CPAP user who is above 10 psi, that you work closely with your surgeon and pulmonologist to work out a plan. Otherwise using a CPAP at high pressure (basically anything over 8 to 10 psi) you may need to wrap your head or risk surgical site failure..
    Can't wait to get activated at the end of March hopefully everything goes well! I'm happy to share my experiences with any one who has any questions!

      @@Ntro_ it went very amazing... That was almost 3 years ago now and it's been quite the journey. At activation I was able to hear for the first time since surgery. At first everyone sounded about the same (like chipmunks huffing helium) but eventually it leveled out. It also took a while for music to sound normal again, but honestly I can say I am glad I did it. Before my implant hearing was a near impossibility, now I am more engaged with others around me and feel a part of the conversation.

    Thank you Brian, I am very worried about my father who had a sudden hearing loss in the right ear and almost going deaf in the left. Sunnybrook team is assessing him for a cochlear surgery....but it is taking forever. He is extremely depressed and housebound now. He needs emotional and mental support.

      Hi Renee, the process can take time. I was assessed in January of 2013 and did not have the surgery until December 2013. 11 months wait. But, it was well worth it! I don't know if the timelines have changed since 2013 but hang in there!!

      Brian Johns thank you Brian. We are all praying for my dad. He is a musician apart from being an engineer. His life depends on music and could not imagine without it. We are doing our best to get through with the Sunnybrook peer support to help him emotionally.
