Thanks for taking time to talk about mental health. My parents refused to medicate me and we managed my ADHD with exercise, practice, and goals. I'm fortunate that I don't also have anxiety or depression with my ADHD, so it actually is manageable without meds. I'm glad they made that choice. I still use a lot of techniques, like note-taking (I should have bought stock in post-it forever ago), hyperorganization, and background music at work so that I'm less distracted. Especially with the music I can reach a hyperfocus state and knock out all my tasks. I also do well when I can multitask and work on different products/projects and rotate through them if I quickly burn out and lose interest in one. I'm also a fan of working nights where there are half the people and half the distraction, as well as working just the one shift rather than rotating. Since I requested nights, I ended up being on a single shift and not rotating like everyone else. Procrastination is still my middle name, but it's easier to get into hyperfocus mode when I'm in crunch time. I work best in high pressure situations, so of course I picked a high-speed job to keep me in that headspace. So far, so good!
Outside work, my wife is so ridiculously patient with me. We write chore lists and she's really good at making sure we make eye contact when she makes requests of me, etc. It helps that I have an open-nagging policy. I absolutely refuse to get bent out of shape when she asks me several times about something. She's willing to not get upset about having to ask, so I make sure I'm willing to take the multiple reminders. That took a little while to get used to, but we have made it work really well for us. I also set a TON of alarms on my phone to remind me to do things.

I have found that music helps me a lot too (it has to be instrumental though). I work from home which is GREAT for not being distracted by other people (trying to work in an office was never a very good fit for me) but not so great for not being distracted by... the whole rest of my life, haha. It would be great to eventually get to a point where I don't need meds. If I do need them, I'm okay with that, but I'm definitely looking to use any other techniques possible as well. It definitely sounds like you've gotten a lot figured out which is very encouraging!

Hi Celeste, I've been experiencing ADHD symptoms - pointed out by friends and my partner which I had only realized this has been plaguing me for a while if not my whole life. Do you feel comfortable telling me what other medications you tried before this current one? My doctor is hesitant to prescribe me Adderall or Ritalin and wants me to try Welbutrin before any Schedule II drugs. I'm frustrated because it will take a month or so to alleviate symptoms if it does work for me. Just curious in your medication journey if you are comfortable being more specific. Wondering if I need to see a psychiatrist who can prescribe me what I believe I need. Thanks so much,

Sure - I know I tried Adderall, Ritalin, Strattera, and Focalin. I think that was all of them. This was all about 12-14 years ago. I was also on Wellbutrin a few times for depression but I don't think I had any focus-related benefit from it personally. I would recommend seeing a psychiatrist if you're able because they're more likely to have more experience with ADHD and which medications might work for you!

@@CelesteM Awesome! Thanks so much for providing the info. I'm definitely going to discuss with my psychiatrist about options - so far for you adzenys has been the best bet? One of the options my doc discussed with me was Vyvanse which you mentioned. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain your process this was all really helpful and validating to listen to.

@@hankcooper2882 For me, Adzenys has been great so far! But everyone is different so definitely stay open to what your doctor recommends! I'm glad this has been helpful and I wish you lots of luck 😊
