This is my first private session with a goalie coach. It's been a struggle to improve on my own so I took the plunge and took some private lessons.
Overall it was a fantastic experience that gave me a clear idea of what to work on to get better as a goaltender.

The hardest thing for most goalies to do is to take good advice.
This is a great thing you are doing and thanks for taking us with you!
35 year old goalie, coming back after 20 plus years. We gotta stick together dude! Good job, proud of you man 🤙
New over 40 goalie here! Thanks for the videos!
Things brings back so many memories from Peewee and my first goalie camps. I learned to skate on c-cuts and when I became a goalie, it was blissfully natural. It's so cool to see someone learning all these things I took for granted as a stupid kid. I'm 43 now and wonder if I can still do half of this lol. Doing great man.
This is pretty cool. I'll be keeping an eye on this series.
Not a goalie or anything, but I just recently started doing one-on-one lessons with a figure skating coach, and it's been a massive help to my skating.
I'm also 40 and had a couple sessions in November. It was awesome. In my 20 years playing I never had more than 5 min of warm up to test things out. So was just learning as I play. Having these sessions were great. Only downside is I got a mcl injury in my league and I'm still not 100 l% to resume my practice sessions. If you have a goalie school or coach near you I highly recommend it. Even if you are playing beer league like I am.
Great to see you get some external help! No doubt it will make you more confident and overall a better goalie! Good luck!
your channel is awesome. over 40 goalie here too.
Hey man, whether it’s in the pros or in low level beer league like us, it’s all about getting better. Good on ya for taking the jump and getting some coaching. It’s a very vulnerable experience but one that you’ll greatly benefit from. Keep killing it, brother. I’m excited to see your journey!
Thanks for the kind words! I felt extremely intimated going to the rink seeing young kids slide around like butter and I’m slowly hobbling over the boards. But like yea said just gotta get better bit by bit on the journey!
Goalie is such a specialized position. Everybody should have the coaching to learn the position correctly. I feel like a lot of kids that play this position don't have the proper coaching because there's not a lot of people out there that understand the position. Nice of you to share this.
I really wish I had invested in lessons rather than buying 10 sets of gear over the years playing thinking gear would make me better...
I’ve always wanted to have coaching sessions, thank you for sharing this in-depth video
Hope your able to pick something up from these videos ! Session 2 coming soon
Coaching is game-changing. You just don't know what you don't know.
Absolutely… Even if you only pick up one or two tidbits, they can unlock a whole new level. Plus, where else are you going to get so many dedicated reps?!
My first coaching session last year (8 year break) I couldnt do C-cuts either. Been practicing for about 30 seconds during warm-ups, C-cuts, butterfly slides, t pushes. Do that 6 times a week between stick and pucks and games and it has improved my game significantly.
Nice that is promising to hear. Its a bit demoralizing when I'm trying to do those c-cuts but like you said, little by little. I'll keep working on it!
Huge props to you man. I started playing goalie because our beer league team didn’t have one and I had the equipment so got thrown into it. I’ve been just teaching myself the past couple years but this highly inspired me to try and work with a goalie coach.
It’s such a great experience. Its nice to spend an hour strictly on technique and taking time to practice
I’m stuck in the 90’s. Can’t be technical as these new guys
But I bet your hips are much healthier than us butterfly goalies lol
this is awesome!
I've had some goalie coaching but not as much as I liked and just one goalie camp....long time ago!
I’m too intimated to goto a camp, maybe one day I’ll try
Gah… this is all the stuff I say I’m going to work on as I drive to the rink, then blink and I’m in net. PS: You don’t look bad at all, I bet you’ll really benefit from it if you keep it up. 🤙 I’m definitely going to look into it for myself, too.
It was really eye opening how just an hour focused on skating already affected my on ice game.
something to help you out with c-cuts. if you use more pressure on your heel you get a decent forward cut and pressure on your toe gets you a decent backward c cut
Thanks for the tip! It’s been so frustrating doing these c cuts .. coach will make me do them first thing in the session again ..
Hey great on you for seeking help and trying to get better, that's what i like best about this playing, trying to get better everyday. Just want to share a bit of advice i heard on the YT. We beer leaguers don't get do do reps or practice, so rather than getting 5 mins of headshots and jock checks, just go to the side and work on your skating. Those 5 mins of work each game will add up over time and help you probably more in game than those shitty shots coming in during warm up. Do drop some vids about how you felt in game after a couple of these sessions.
That's great advice, every minute adds up over time.
As for how I felt the next game, after this first session I had a game the night after which I think I played my best in the season (even my teammates said so). It's the latest game footage I posted czcams.com/video/2Ku2-wD6TFE/video.html I just felt lighter on my feet (narrower stance) and more confident moving around.
Although I am trying to be patient with myself and not judging based on immediate results. It's mind blowing how just skating can help. My next step is to sign up for skating lessons, so you might see me at the rink using a cone with a bunch of kiddos at some point...
