The footage of John and Paul face-to-face playing Two of Us is the ultimate cathartic moment of the movie and worth the price of admission. Despite everything that came in between, it’s still Paul and John horsing around, playing some music, and having some laughs. Distilled to it’s simplest form, it’s why we love the Beatles and can’t get enough of them. It’s the greatest romance of the 20th century. ❤

George's mum fell ill and he had to be with her in Liverpool before she died, and his wife Patti was in a crisis with Clapton, and George overheard the blabbing Dick James that he wasn't getting a fair shake from Beatles record sales because he didn't have enough songs in them. The whole nine yards came crashing down down.

When my brother and I went to go see this in 1970 there's a couple things that really stood out. The argument between Paul and George, and there's another short little seen that I think everyone forgot about it's when I think they're doing two of us and John is not close enough to the microphone and they start the song and all of a sudden the camera pans at Paul's face and he's pointing to the microphone and sternly says get on the mic! Then you hear John kind of go well ok, then Paul kind of backs off and says real low you know because I can't hear you. Then John comes back real low voice going well you don't have to bitch about it. Yeah I'm going to be really interested in watching this all cleaned up.

I really enjoyed Let It Be and thought it was probably closer to the way the band were feeling at the time. Also, unlike Get Back which paints Paul in a beautiful light, Let It Be shows him basically getting on everyone's nerves.
Remember, there was a reason why they all thought making the album was a miserable time and this film captures the tension perfectly.

There are two sides to every story. Peter Jackson showed us the most productive part of the Let It Be sessions and the original shows more of the darker moments. It makes perfect sense to offer a balance for the audience to see a more complete picture...Not a bad thing at all. The Beatles were. after all, just humans like us.

But because there was so much footage, editing can make many false connections as you go back and forth between scenes that may have occurred many days apart, but are now juxtaposed in the film. This creates concepts in our minds. For instance, Paul suggests they do the corny one for now [which is a line they're discussing in Don't Let Me Down] and then the film immediately cuts to them rehearsing Maxwell's Silver Hammer. Ha ha. Cute, but misleading. But of course, Peter Jackson's footage is edited as well.

Senior citizen here who lived through these Beatle's events in real time.
I've had Let It Be on DVD for a long time, in fact I have 2 copies, one is from S Korea, complete with Korean subtitles if you wish.
I've loved this movie, and I was extremely excited to see the Peter Jackson version.
I waited until the price came down and after watching some of the movie, I was very disappointed. Waaaaay too much information and talk talk talk talk. Truthfully, to me it's like watching paint dry.
I've yet to watch the whole thing, and I doubt I ever will.
I know I'm probably in the minority with my opinion of Get Back, but I'm still a Beatle's fan at 77.
We have the Beatles Box set in mono on vinyl and it's our go to edition of listening. Also picked up the Giles Martin remixes(except Revolver).
Will probably pick this re-issued version, that is, if they didn't mess with it too much.

I really don't get why so many people are bashing over this film.
You gotta understand this was put together in 1970, Lindsay-Hogg had 50+ hours of film to work with. Many say "he had something against The Beatles that's why he made this film depressing", I bet those people haven't seen the movie in years or probably never.
It does have its little fun moments, although the tense ones are more prominent. Get Back does have a lot of those tense and fun moments, but it's more "bearable" or less "noticeable" as it is a 9 hour documentary.

    • @profile2047
      @profile2047 Před měsícem +2

I agree. Also listening to the unreleased tapes that weren’t included in either documentary it could be argued the Peter Jackson also took liberties (maybe due to pressure from Paul and Yoko) in making it more rose tinted than it was.
Just considering all the information I’ve seen/heard neither documentary tells the whole story. And it was a difficult and fun time.
If you’re interested there are CZcams channels (I think pop goes the 60s is one) that show a lot of the more dramatic arguments that fill out why there was so much rumored tense feelings.

‘Let it be’ is a remarkable film showing the Beatles’ songwriting process and giving fans the opportunity to see their last performance live after 3 years of stage absence. In 1970 the film left people sad ‘cause the group had just split up - it was a real tragedy then - and now they want to see it again with different eyes.
Peter Jackson’s ‘Get back’ series, tough interesting for fans, I.m.o. looks more like a reality show which had mainly the purpose to mark the band’s joyful moments left out from the original film and for the reason previously said 🤔

I saw Let it Be during its first run in movie theatres. I don`t recall any negativity surrounding it at the time, we were all just very happy to see the Beatles working on their songs, and of course the rooftop concert was terrific.
The reason this movie went out of circualtion for so many years is that Paul found that it painted a negative image of him, in particular over his argument with George captured on camera. During the filming, George did quit for a few days. According to George Martin, Paul was very "bossy" with the other three. Paul has been trying to control - and in some cases rewrite - Beatles history for years.

".....George did quit for a few days. According to George Martin, Paul was very "bossy" with the other three. Paul has been trying to control - and in some cases rewrite - Beatles history for years." It needs to be remembered that G. Martin had the least involvement with the was-to-have-been 1969 "Get Back" studio album (many preliminary pressings of that album got sent out to some radio stations in England and North America, then were abruptly pulled away) that would be salvaged the next year in the studio by svengali music producer Phil Spector with some reshuffled order of the album track listing with the new name "Let It Be". After finishing the 1967 masterpiece "Sgt. Peppers......." album the unexpected death of their manager Brian Epstein from a (possibly suicidal) overdose caused Paul to perhaps try to fill some sort of missing directional void that was lost with their manager not with them any longer and it resulted in some disjointed productions like the final week in 1967 British-only TV special "Magical Mystery Tour" and then the next years double ("white") album set with its great songs and then average or weirder tracks like "Revolution No.9". By the middle of 1969 the Beatles went back to George Martin and said to him that they wanted to return with him into the studio, for what possibly could be one last time, to record a completely new album "the old way", referring to the style of the Beatles studio "unity" during 1966 and 1967, that end result was the album "Abbey Road". As for Paul being very bossy with the others, there was a American radio deejay that met the Beatles during their concert tour in 1964 (we're talking about the Paul of 1964 here, after all, not the late 60's Paul), this deejay said compared to the other three, Paul was the least aloof and most gregarious and pleasant of them all to talk and deal with. Just the one deejay's impression of Paul, after all.

That would have been a CED disc, a similar but different format to laserdisc. Laserdiscs look like giant CDs and they don't stay in a cartridge, you play them in the same manner that you play a DVD except you need to change sides in the middle of the film (unless you have an autoflip player which has a 2nd laser). Let It Be had limited releases on VHS, laserdisc and CED, all of which are now collector's items so whoever ended up with that CED copy could have sold it for quite a decent amount of money if they held onto it.

I agree that _Get Back_ makes it easier to watch, knowing it's not the miseryfest it's been considered as for the last 50+ years. The film was OK. Problem was the re-editing. The group wanted less John and Yoko. Makes sense that Peter Jackson did not use much of the movie bits. That alone should have been a big clue that this film will be released. Will it be full frame or letterbox? Won't matter, fans will complain either way. Seeing the muddy/heavily cropped image of Let It Be kind of ruined it for me. Finally seeing it crystal clear as intended would make me happy. If there ever was a physical release (fingers crossed) that they should add the unseen extended bits from Get Back as a bonus feature.

I have a bootleg DVD of the “poor quality” Let It Be, and I think it is worth seeing a MUCH better quality version of the film on Disney+. I must have seen Get Back at least 5 times, and now having Let It Be FINALLY be shown in the best quality possible gives this chapter of the Beatles a more complete picture of what went on. I agree that Get Back steered away from showing Let It Be footage, but there were exceptions.
One that immediately comes to mind is the Paul and George “argument”. Let It Be has a more direct focus on the two Beatles communicating whereas Get Back showed a more all-around view of that moment. LIB cuts off the argument after George says to Paul, “whatever it is that will please you, I’ll do it,” going straight to John singing Across the Universe. Despite the fact LIB is only 90 minutes, you kind of see The Beatles in three different stages: the misery at Twickenham, the better atmosphere at Apple Studios and having Billy Preston, and the rooftop performance.
If you think about it, having both Get Back and Let It Be on Disney+ is like having The Beatles Anthology, only it’s about one month of their lives. I, for one, can’t WAIT!!!

The original Let It Be film had full performances of Two Of Us, Take 19 of The Long and Winding Road, and Take 27B/28 of Let It Be featured in it. I was pretty disappointed when we only got 15 seconds worth of each song, and we've still yet to be able to see the full, stripped down performance of Take 27A of Let It Be that was used for the Let It Be single and album.

People may think it is too depressing, but the original 'Let It Be' is real. It is not sugar coated, even though we do not see the bad arguments that the Beatles themselves say ruined those sessions for them. It is a part of history. For that reason we should have a much better version than the bootleg one I have on DVD.

So The Beatles were faking it in the footage for Get Back but were not in Let it Be. How did they know which footage would be used for Let it Be unless they personally edited it. People have been known to to be happy at times. George and John saw the Let it Be movie so that may be why they remembered it that way. Even Paul and Ringo remembered it as a downer because of the way the movie was edited. Than they saw the other footage and saw it wasn’t all bad.

    • @thefonzkiss

That’s a simplistic take. How can 90 minutes of footage be a more representative documentary than an eight hour one? If anything the original LIB was a false narrative as that suggests the entire thing was miserable.

      @johnurban7333 Před měsícem

@@BobE316 there probably is more negative film that we haven’t seen. Peter Jackson wanted to show that The Beatles also had fun while filming since the original movie showed so much tension between the band. One month together in a stressful situation is going to cause some friction. Micheal just happened to focus on the negative and Peter on the positive. Either way I’m glad to see both sides and it adds to their legacy. With age comes wisdom, I’m sure John and George would look fondly on their time as The Beatles as Paul and Ringo do now.

@@tombeyerlein3813 Yeah, I just watched Let It Be again for the first time in decades and I was like, no wonder John was so mad! But if the goal was to favour Paul, it really backfired in light of the break-up, because he was not shown in the best light and thus the film was used as evidence that he was the villain. every scene of Paul in Let It Be is pretty negative.
Example: Paul is filmed from the back of the head in a snippet from a much longer discussion about the nature of the project. We are seeing John's face, but the scene is cut without any replies from John. It is also completely out of context. From this scene, the viewer will infer that Paul wants to return to live performance and John is having none of it, because he looks bored. John is in fact listening intently, but he already agrees with Paul about this point and he's wondering where this conversation is going, b/c Paul is meandering around a lot in the original discussion. Paul's tone is also rather preachy, but we can't see his face, so there's no way to read his intent. It comes across like Paul is trying to convince John to help him corral George into doing something he doesn't want to do. Is that what's going on? Maybe... maybe not, but our interpretation is being decided for us through editing.

I wish I could get excited about this but Peter Jackson is the one who restored it - and that dude HATES film grain. The Get Back series documentary looked absolutely atrocious because of all the unnecessary grain removal that Jackson used with his AI-based restoration method - he went overboard with to the point where at points it looked like we were watching some weird watercolor painting come to life in spots. The result is that it looked like weird video footage from the early 2000's instead of a film-shot documentary from 1970. Those sessions were shot on 16mm film which produces some pretty chunky grain - visible enough to be seen on regular DVD. And while any film restoration should tame that grain to a point - removing it completely is blasphemy. At that point, you're not even watching the original film anymore - you're watching an AI rendering of it instead.

Sorry dude, all the remastering in the universe can't change the energy, and lack thereof, of Let it Be. I saw it. It was terrible then, a movie with a bad vibe and a bored, indifferent, and disgruntled cast of characters and since it's not wine I don't see it getting better with age. I was kind of interested when Peter Jackson got involved in touching it up because Ringo said they were going to lose a bunch of the bitchy and dull moments and show those moments that got left on the cutting room floor, the ones where they had fun. But then disney did what disney does best, they got involved and contaminated it by demanding a F-N tele-series for their their crap network instead of the two-hour theater release Jackson originally talked about making. That meant bringing in all the old garbage and then adding some more to fill space. Jackson could have said no but he took the money, just like he did with The Hobbit. Oh well, a guy has to make a living. I guess.
I have no interest in Let it Be but that's just me. I'd almost rather watch Magical Mystery Tour. Paul is a great musician and he was a great songwriter once upon a time but he was always a sh*tty movie maker, and Let it Be and Magical Mystery both prove that point. As the critic wrote about Magical Mystery Tour: "The Beatles grabbed a bunch of their friends, put them on a bus, and filmed what happened. The problem is nothing did." Same with this movie. Watch it if you want, but be honest with yourself as you are, and find a good reason for spending any money on it. I bet you will have to fish for one. But like I say, that's me. I'm a Beatlemaniac of the highest order but this...sorry, I'll take a hard pass, fool me once kind of thing.
