Who do you think is the most evil ex?
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are reacting to Scott Pilgrim vs. the World… with a twist. They’re reacting to Ramona’s evil exes and ranking them from least worst to most worst. But Alan’s got a twist on the twist! And then Jono comes up with another twist!? As with every Edgar Wright film, they giddily react to the stylized and witty filmmaking. Jonathan explains what makes some of the exes so evil, and he talks about what’s going on with Scott.

Would that crash the man? Sure.
Would it be more socially acceptable cuz gay is more socially acceptable today?
      Yes
Would it have been more socially acceptable in the early 20s?
      No
Just cuz it's a woman or a man, straight or gay doesn't matter.

I disagree that being a phase means it held no value or love.
I've had many phases in life (some romantic, some like school or friends). I've also been those phases for lots of people.
At the end of the day, I see it as them and me teaching the other something about their/my true self - or at least the person we'd like to become.
If your love ends up being a building block for someone else's cathedral, it still hurts that they didn't build it with/for you, obviously.
But over time I've come to see that the life they wanted to live is not the one I wanted to.
And so, even though the rejection hurts, I'm also glad I got to live in my own cathedral.
And if some of my masonry ended up featured in some (but not all!) elements of theirs, then even though I was a phase for them and even though it hurts, it still was not for nothing.
You can be a meaningful phase, and if you helped the other person discover who they are/want to be, then there is also a kind of tragic beauty to be found in that...

And then, Ramona has to fight her, because again; Roxy doesn't count as a real ex in this movie, or a real person, so this is not Scott's battle, it's hers. I know the hosts don't talk about it here, but the Twins fight scene is not only cool, it really brings out how evil Scott can become if he doesn't improve upon himself: The Soundwave yeti has green eyes ( green with envy), he sees Gideon and pines for Ramona more, there's also a sick reference to Flash Gordon as well. It's a great scene and Threshold is a great song.
Edit: Scott's shirt I believe says 4.5 on it, meaning he could become evil ex #8 with enough time.

I feel like the film brings up an interesting logical fallacy. One popular phrase people use about video games is, ”if I run into enemies, I’m going in the right direction.” While that works in a game, opposition doesn’t always mean it is the right direction. While it is good to face opposition, there are times that facing it would do more harm for yourself than anything else.

He eventually grows from the relationship ending, rather than the Ex’s dwelling on the relationship and never growing. (At least in the original comic, the movie doesn’t go through that.)

While the comics are great, I get the impression that O'Malley realizes part way through writing that Scott is actually kind of a piece of crap. Like yeah, Scott is a piece of shit, but who isn't when they're 23? I feel like there's so much nuance you have to approach this media with when discussing it, Bryan Lee O'Malley NEVER wanted us to believe that Scott was a good person. Despite all the fantasy, these characters feel real because they're flawed. I'm by no means excusing their bad behavior but what I'm saying is, they were never meant to be portrayals of morality.

There's actually an alternate ending where Scott leaves with Knives and Ramona goes through the door alone. They still start healing, with both apologising for the way they acted to the other, they just decide it's healthier for them to be apart instead of together, which might be just as valid of a take as them helping each other to be better.

Especially in the books, but the biggest theme for me was about handling your past unhealthy ways. Scott just denies it ever happened (although Gideon did interfere with that in the last book, which I didn't like); Ramona runs away from the past; Gideon tries to hold and entrap it.
All the exes represent some aspect of the relationship that's difficult (and often some unresolved problem from Ramona's past). And Scott - for all his faults - fights for Ramona and the relationship, and has to improve himself in the process.
My absolute favourite moment in the books is when Ramona stands up and fights, not for herself, but for Scott. It's not subtle with the subtext. "Ramona earned the Power of Love [an awesome sword that also appears in the film]. The power of love has healed her wounds".

I don’t think Scott is genuinely bad, he’s just too immature to realize how much he sucks until the end of the story

I just want to say this on the most recent video, but I've been watching Cinema Therapy for about a year and a half now; and I've always appreciated Jono and Alan's candor when talking about their own personal struggles. Not in a parasocial way, but these are two men who - by societal standards - have everything going for them. Stability, family, a passion project. And yet they are still open about the struggles they do and have had.
As someone in Gen Z, it's so easy to feel like we're going to be crushed under the weight of everything. But it eases some of my anxiety when Jono and Alan are able to say, "Sometimes things suck. They sucked for us, but we got through it. We're still getting through it. And it's hard, but it gets easier over time."
I just really appreciate the authenticity and transparency that this channel operates with.

    What!

  • @rmsgrey
    @rmsgrey Před měsícem +5

Something I like from the movie is that, while it's ostensibly about Scott confronting Ramona's exes and beating them up, in the process we also get some closure with Scott's exes - Kim Pine is still a part of Scott's life, and gets an apology by the end. Natalie "Envy" Adams is revealed to be a bitch now (and possibly then) but hints at a softer side while leaving. Knives Chau is too cool for Scott anyway, and Ramona is at least working on her habit of ditching relationships.

Also, wanted to recommend The Fountain as a future analysis, as I’ve personally found the movie very powerful in my own struggles with death and grief, and think more people could benefit from this film, since not many people have seen it due to poor marketing at the time of its release.
    Love what you guys do!!

unrelated to this video, I just casually drop a suggestion of a non-ghibli anime movie (and even if for once I'm early, I'm still totally aware that you must get thousands of those and I won't stand a chance as just a simple youtube commentor and not even patreon etc. I still do once more)
The award winning fantasy drama " *Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms* ". Not only is the art style very beautiful, but mostly it is a really thought provoking tale about motherhood, love and more. I'm sure you would like it. And bawl your eyes out. It's beautifully sad.
