I think that if this kind of Metroid spin off released right now, people would be a lot more open and willing to give it a chance. But since it was the first new Metroid game in so long, it was super disappointing. Looking back, Federation Force feels like that one phrase "the night is darkest just before the dawn." Because right around the corner was a total renaissance for Metroid, we just didn't know it yet

My feelings as well. Or announce Samus Returns first and then announce Federation Force right after so this way Metroid fans could go "well hey at least we know a proper 2D game is coming next year, maybe this multiplayer spinoff can be a decent time waster while we wait" (kinda like how Hunters on the DS was a little something that held fans over in the wait between Prime 2 and 3).

Other M is a highly underrated and misunderstood game. The entire point was that all of a sudden you weren't an intergalactic super-powered bouty hunter. You were at the mercy of the environment instead of controlling it. The Metroid atmosphere was there in spades.
Was it the best Metrois game ever? No, of course not. But it wasn't the worst either. Could Other M have been better? Yes, but that question can be asked and answered the same for even the pinnacle of gaming.
At the end of the day, Other M felt like a Metroid game in some ways, regardless of what any individual thought of it.

My favorite thing about this video is remembering just how uniquely cursed that year's E3 was? Like sure Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam annoyed Paper Mario fans, but it also literally killed the Mario and Luigi series and the company that made them. Star Fox Zero torpedoed the Star Fox franchise further into obscurity. Triforce Heroes is the worst-rated Zelda game and was doomed to irrelevance by launching in the build-up to Breath of the Wild, which totally rewrote what it meant to be a Zelda game. Fire Emblem Fates is the most divisive Fire Emblem and 1/3 of the game is now inaccessible to fans thanks to the eshop closure. It's almost comical how badly some of these games misfired.

Downplaying Other M, it's critical and commercial failure, is missing half of the point here. Without that, the series doesn't have that drought, and the backlash potentially is avoided; but then again Federation Force probably doesn't get made in that scenario. Giving Metroid fans a whiff of that 'Chibi Robo Zip Lash' potential was also disastrous since it was fresh in the minds of Nintendo fans. Nintendo trotting out Bill Trinen in January of 2016 to say 'we think fans were confused by this' was not making the situation better, either. As a huge Metroid fan I can’t tell you how disappointed I was to read that Federation Force was a co-op focused shooter instead of a traditional Metroid game. The art style wasn’t great, but the focus on multiplayer and the soccer game just turned me off of the whole thing. Needless to say I was pretty disgusted for the rest of the day.
But the announcement of Samus Returns and Prime 4 more than made up for that travesty. I’m glad Metroid is not just back on track, but is insanely popular today too! Looking forward to Prime 4 and maybe whatever else they got cooking in the meantime. Hell, if they try to do Federation Force again, I might give it the time of day. But probably not. They should just leave that spin off series in the dust.

  • @RegalPixelKing
    @RegalPixelKing Před 10 měsíci +7

I never thought that this would be a bad game when it was announced. But it's the fact that they announced a spin-off that did not represent Metroid in any way after years of neglecting the franchise. Like if they released a mainline Metroid game along side Federation Force then the blow back would not have been so bad.
Even if the game itself was not bad, Nintendo and that game does deserve the hate that they got. It was like a slap in the face to the fans after ignoring them for several years.

I still don’t get why this was on the 3DS. The Switch was just around the corner and would not only have more processing power but also split-screen co-op. I think this game would have been slightly better received if you only need extra controllers to play with friends and not up to 4 3DS consoles each with their own copies of the game.

  • @elheber

Nintendo could have made it a stealth spin-off, without a clear indication that it was Metroid in the marketing, and only have its connection revealed to players late into the story campaign. If they had done this, instead of blow back, players would have gone nuts with glee.

I wouldn't even say this isn't Metroid since it obviously was trying to build up the world and lore outside of Samus rather than keeping the entire franchise basically all about her and her alone. Its just a different flavor of Metroid Prime game... that came out when fans went five years with no Metroid game, and that last Metroid game left the sourest taste in their mouths. Next to nobody was willing to give it a chance due to that.
Nowadays people are looking back and being Thanos about it, realizing they were FAR too harsh on Fed Force.

I've actually finished the game. There was only like 1 or 2 missions that I couldn't do solo and somehow, there were like 2 other guys on the matchmaking willing to play.
The game was alright. It was kinda fun to pass time but it's not even that good, and the 3DS is SUCH a limitation that's painful. The artstyle, the fact that we are playing in mechs instead of just ... soldiers, just so monsters can appear smaller and have human chibis.
It would just have been better on the Switch(2). Even if it was announced alongside MP4 and Samus Returns and released on the 3DS, it probably would have flopped (tho Samus Returns sold pretty well considering it's a 3DS game released in 2017), the backlash wouldn't have been the same I'm pretty sure

The game shown in the clip is actually the first one in the series, so it could also be an error and it was intended to be Xenoblade X instead, which yes, was pretty different to the game before it.
