Hey everyone! It's Chris with
ARTIFACT and this is part of a video
series that we're doing where we take a
look at pieces from
my personal collection that I use for
design inspiration for ARTIFACT and
other projects.
Today we're going to be looking at
something in this bag. It's actually a recent acquisition.
This is an early Patagonia brand rugby.
I was pretty stoked to find this piece
because it was being sold as a 1990's
vintage
rugby, but when you look at the tag,
it doesn't have any trademark symbol and
my understanding is that would date it
to
1980's... in fact early 1980's.
Patagonia, as everyone's probably aware
is a really great company founded by Yvon Chouinard.
The rugby is really the piece that
ushered him into the apparel business.Yvon
was.. I want to say he was in Scotland,
or at least he sourced these rugby shirts
from Scotland. Originally, they were Umbro brand
rubies,
and he thought they were really ideal
clothing for climbing because
they wouldn't chafe his neck with his
ropes, and the knit is just so sturdy.
What's cool about this one is even
though it's early 1980s vintage,
this is one of the original color ways
that he carried in the 1970s. So, if you
were wearing it you'd be
hard-pressed to tell whether it was in
fact 1970s or 1980s vintage. It's has your twill collar. And
the herringbone twill piping.
They're just really sturdy
This one's got your rubber buttons. I
think the really early ones
may not have had rubber though. I've seen ones where they're plastic, and these
these rubber buttons are pretty hard now.
Cool armpit gusset. They're 100 cotton so
even though this one's a medium it's definitely a vintage
medium. We'll call it that. Classic Ivy style
and a great garment. I'm happy to own it.
Thanks for watching.
This Shirt is know as the College Blue- Jordanhill college where PE teachers wore this as part of the kit. My first view was Bobby Clark , ex Aberdeen and Scotland goalkeeper wearing it to teach in 1970 at St.Peters RC school in Aberdeen. It was standard kit for PE teachers before that.I got mine in 1976 but my Colleague, Frank Strang, said his dad had one when he qualified, perhaps more than 20 years before that. Interesting that Patagonia picked up this idea in Scotland in 1970.Was it when training at Glenmore Lodge for climbing, skiing and outdoor education. It cost £8.90 pence from R.W.Forsyths in Renfield stree tGlasgow 1976
It would not surprise me if Yvon Chouinard (Patagonia) appropriated school colors / patterns for his rugbys. If I recall correctly, he discovered the durable shirts in the 1970's on a climb / trip in South America and felt they would make great climbing shirts.
I had one for many years in the 80s. Best shirt I had. Wore it to shreds.
Reminds me of a shirt that Monroe would wear from too close for comfort show
There were a lot of bold striped rugbys being worn during that era. LL Bean, Gant, etc...
Thanks!
And where is that bag from?
Thanks for watching. That bag is something I / my company (www.artifactbags.com @artifactbags) made. Not something we currently produce but we make plenty of other totes. Check out the site or our Instagram.
I believe Chris Chan had that shirt
Chris Chan is not on my radar but thanks for watching.
