Robert Shaw , Quint , was a British actor , novelist and play writer , died only 3 years after Jaws in 1978 , after 8 more movies . Jaws movie is based on a book , but story of USS Indianapolis is real , by that it had crew of 1195 men and 316 survived , when it was sunk 15 min after midnight , 30 july 1945 , this was days after its bomb parts delivery , survivors were spotted in the open ocean three and a half days later. At 10: 25 on 2 August .The number of deaths attributed to sharks ranges from a few dozen to 150 . More of the sailors died from the elements , hypothermia , delirium , they had no water or food and they were inhaling ships fuel , bunker oil , fumes .
Watch Deep Blue Sea. Very underrated shark movie.

In the 1990's Lee Fiero (the woman who played Mrs. Kintner and slapped Chief Brody) was on vacation with a friend. She walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed they had a menu item called the Alex Kitner Sandwich. She mentioned she played Alex's mom. Suddenly the restaurant owner ran out of the back and hugged her. It was Jeff Vorhees, the actor who played her son. It was the first time they saw each other since principal shooting wrapped.

Quint smashed the radio bc it was his quest, his revenge for the Indianapolis (which was real), his 10,000 dollars. He was not to be robbed of it.
I’ve heard a theory that he was having a war flashback, actually. And that he started the fire the night before. It’s because he was under orders on the Indianapolis to maintain radio silence.
I just thought he destroyed the radio because he didnt want the other fishermen on the island to know that the great and mighty Quint needed help catching a shark.....it was a matter of stubborn pride....same with not getting a bigger boat

Yes pride was central to his choices. That's his world, his boat, his job. No way he would let the new sheriff and the fancy college boy tell him what to do or call for help.
This movie still holds up. And yes, Steven Spielberg and John Williams are amazing. They still are.

Quint is Ahab. His obsession did him in. His wanting to kill the shark was his way to redeem his fellow crew members that died on the Indianapolis .
That's what I thought and Bruce the shark was the great white whale

There's a very good explanation, for the PG rating. It has nothing to do with the decade, the movie was made in.
I don't remember the exact explanation, so I won't give you one here. But the only scene they had to change, was the leg from the guy in the small boat, dropping to the ocean floor. It had to be shortened.
I also have to point out that the animatronics in "Jaws" still look more real than today's CGI.
Even if the shark prop was an absolute nightmare to work with, since it had been designed and built for use in fresh water, with the assumption it would be used in a tank at a studio set. As a result of being used in the actual ocean, it broke down all the time and sank a few times too. This actually helped the movie, because they could only show the shark sparingly, forcing Steven Spielberg to get creative and really ratchet up the tension
Practical effects are always better looking than CGI but movie making is more business than art. And big practical effects are problematic and expensive.

Brody wanted to close the beach after Chrissie's death and even started doing it if you remember those first scenes, but the mayor and city council basically told him "you don't have the authority to do that without our permission" and then denied him permission to do it.
The reason you don't see the shark very much is that the company that made the shark didn't know it was going to be used in salt water. The shark malfunctioned a lot because of the corrosive salt water. It actually made the movie better, not seeing the shark very much till the end made the movie much more suspenseful. BTW, the sharks' name is Bruce. This movie is the first summer blockbuster

Not seeing the shark for the beach scenes were by design though. The mechanical shark wasn't ever scheduled to be used in them. First appearance of the shark wasn't scheduled until the ocean hunt scenes. Far more of the shark WAS meant to be shown in those scenes so you are right there.
The look on Brodys face the first time he sees it when he’s tossing the chum…gets me every time.

I remembered when this movie came in the Summer of 1975. I was an 11 years old. No one wanted to go in the ocean.
I was 11 in 1975 too. This movie was a huge deal at the time.
I saw this when I was 7. After that I had to be persuaded to even get into the bathtub, lol

Seeing this in a theater in 1975 was incredible. Prior to this movie, there was no such thing as the "summer blockbuster". This was the first.
BTW the date I was with seeing this movie reacted pretty much as you did, as did much of the theater audience.
Seeing it a few months later with someone who hadn't seen it yet was almost as much fun as seeing it the first time yourself. I still watch it from time to time.
This movie so affected me back then i was 13 and wanted to be a marine biologist after seeing this. I never did become one, but I remain fascinated by sharks. Anyway, in 1975, we didn't have cable or vcrs or dvds. I saw it in the theater 5 times that summer. The first time, the jump scare with Ben Gardner's head got everyone in the theater. When Brody blows up the shark at the end, the entire theater got up and gave the happening a standing ovation. By the time I saw it for the 5th time, there were a bunch of bratty teens saying a lot of the movie's lines before the actors did and no ovation at the end. I guess everyone had seen it about as many times as I did, but I was still loving it.

This film was the first "summer blockbuster."
It defined the entire pattern of movie-making that has prevailed, for more than 45 years.
It was Spielberg's first mega-hit.
The Indianapolis story is a true one.
Mostly. The sharks didn’t kill all of the men who died. A lot died from exposure or wounds from the torpedos exploding.
the dead guy in the bottom of the boat jump scare, ALWAYS got me, no matter how many times I have watched Jaws. I can know it's coming and it will still get me.
you know that was added after test screenings as Spielberg wanted 1 more jump scare.
The purpose of the barrels is to tire the animal out and keep it near the surface, where it could be harpooned or even effectively shot. Also, once the animal was taken, if the barrels weren't on it, it would likely sink and then there's no evidence you got the shark. Small caliber bullets, especially shooting at something under the water, can be problematic on an animal of that size.
So due to the barrels, the rests of the shark are there, hanging at some point in the dark deep, after Brody blowed the shark up.
Most sharks need to be constantly moving to breathe so the barrels should cause enough drag that the shark gets fatigued and slow it down to the point that it can't breathe and should drown/ suffocate.
Also, it's hard to shoot at anything in the water or in the ground. Water has much more resistance than air, which slows the bullet down dramatically. This not only decreases the range, it also decreases the power it has, and you'll need a lot of "stopping power" on something as large as a shark. A 25-ft Great White would need a hell of a lot of small arms fire to take down, and the best weapon they had seems to be a M1 Garand, probably loaded with .30-06 Springfield. It's a decent round and a great rifle, but little ammunition. The harpoon, on the other hand, isn't designed to kill the shark but to attach the air tanks that'll keep the shark from escaping while also potentially drowning it.
Additionally, this is Quint's job, so the other two probably packed what he told them to bring. As we saw, even he wasn't prepared for this beast, so it's highly unlikely that Brody would have thought to bring much in the way of weaponry.

@@scorp77snake Yes i know. Brody puts his head under the water and sees the dead shark going to the deep slowly until it dissapears of his sight. The ropes wouldnt be so long i imagine so maybe the shark is hanging 30-40 meters in the deep as much. I find this ending pretty scary because in the book the body is intact and, well, is dead but the shark is still there somehow.
Did you know Jaws was filmed at the island of Martha’s Vineyard? The kid who played Alex Kitner who got eaten in that movie is the manager of a local restaurant called The wharf pub his name is Jeffrey Voorhees, If you ever plan a vacation someday you should try that island

The one scene shot in Australia is also the only actual shark footage _and_ the most improbable footage in the movie: the shark destroying the shark cage.
He originally lived in my neighborhood in Connecticut. I used to play baseball with his younger brother then his family moved moved to Martha's Vineyard right before they began filming Jaws.

It’s called Survivors Guilt from being in the Military and surviving USS Indianapolis sinking 1,000s went in the water 300 came out and Quint survived all that carnage

There's a similar tragedy during that time period most people (including myself) had never heard of, in fact, it's the second deadliest mass shark attack in history. In 1943 the US transport ship Cape San Juan was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine, it carried 1,464 passengers and crew with the bulk being made up of the 855th Engineer Aviation Battalion, an all-black unit. Of the 1,464 passengers and crew, only 448 survived, just 54 less than the USS Indianapolis tragedy.
Mary, the USS Indianapolis was a ship sunk in June of 1945, just as Quint said. That part of the move was based on a profoundly real incident, and I don't think anyone told the story better than Robert Shaw in that scene!! I love your reactions, by the way, Sweet Lady!!
The USS Indianapolis realy happened, and it remains today one of my favorite monologue/acting moments from a Spielberg film.
You cant really comment on "graphics" on films of the 70's or previous decades since CGI was almost non-existent. At least in movies.
As I recal, the first movies to make extensive use of any kind of computer graphics were Tron and ST: The Wrath of Khan, both in 1982.

So, Americans pronounce "demise" pretty much the same way you said it. Robert Shaw was a british actor, playing an American in this movie, with (his version) of an American accent. I think he was just having some fun with the word. Honestly, his accent sounds about the same as he does in his other movies, where he's playing Brits. No shade, though. The guy is, was, always will be one of the greats.
I think Brits mispronounce words just get a rise out of people. Notice how they pronounce 'schedule'? Yeah, they're toying with us all.
He was also good as a Bond villain.

I don't think he's supposed to be a native-born American in Jaws, he's just lived in Amity long enough that people know him. I have full confidence Shaw could've pulled off an American accent if he'd been asked to.

Mythbusters tackled pretty much everything that happens in this film, and pretty much the only thing they totally busted was the air tank exploding when shot.
A big great white could really pull down that many barrels, and drag a boat the size of the Orca backwards at a pretty good speed.
The shooting bullets in water too, they only penetrate about a foot of water before disintegrating.

@@redrick8900 Yes they do: in the final moments of the battle Brody fires several shots before delivering his iconic line, and althoguh Mary didn't show it in this video, you can see at least one of these hit the water, followed by an underwater shot where you can distinctly make out the trail of the bullet passing through the water

Not just a classic by THE Summer Blockbuster. Before Jaws there was no such thing as a blockbuster movie. Here with Spielberg the master of such, this was the beginning of it all.
"Tentpole." There were a few blockbusters prior--THE EXORCIST, THE GODFATHER--but they were seen as singular events unconnected to each other. JAWS was the first time there was a template for actually creating a blockbuster on purpose and using the summer as the window to launch it. Wide release during the summer was thought of as a fool's errand before JAWS.
Which was not entirely a good thing.
Saw this movie when I was six years old at a drive-in! It set the course of my life. Sure the shark scared the bejeezus out of me but I was mostly fascinated by Quint's story of the Indianapolis tho it took me nearly a decade to understand why: Nothing happens during the story, just words. He held the audience spellbound for 2 minutes with nothing more than words, albeit a bone-ch8lling true story but just words.
I've been a writer ever since.
You may be interested to know that the man in the glasses and blue blazer doing the TV story is the writer of the original Jaws book, Peter Benchley.

I saw it when I wa around 6 years old too, on TV in the early 80`s, scared the hell out of me as a kid, Quint death scene was horrific.
I was 4. Double feature with “Young Frankenstein”, so my parents had NO idea what trauma JAWS would cause.
I’m 52 and still afraid of swimming when I can’t see what’s in the water.
Fun fact, the shark spinning on top of the cage is actually a real shot and a real shark.
It's the reason Hooper survived in the movie. The shot was too good not to use but there was nobody in the cage when the shark got tangled. To explain it, Hooper had to have escaped the cage.
30 minutes into your review, when Quint destroys the radio, is the moment when it is clear that he has turned from Quint to Ahab.
Quint's experience with sharks made him overconfident in his skill and ability, even after they realized the shark was much larger than they initially realized. He also may have been concerned about not getting his full payment if they needed a larger boat or Coast Guard assistance. He was set in his ways with how to catch sharks, but unfortunately had never been up against one as aggressive and large before, to his detriment.
Quint is very much an Ahab character, and the shark was his white whale.
Tbf this wasn't your average shark. In fact it's almost supernatural when you think about it.
I always loved the way that Quint looks at the life jackets before he finally decides he’s outmatched and asks Hooper for help.
This is also a somewhat incorrect read. The shark is not intended to be a realistic shark. By the end the film has gone almost into the supernatural or purely metaphorical. Quint would have been fine w a real or realistic shark. He wasn't 'overconfident' and didn't make tactical shark-hunting errors. He plays it perfectly. But they weren't dealing w a real shark. It is foolish to break this down as if it's a realistic film or shark. It gets more and more surreal as it goes on at sea.

Quint destroyed the radio when Brody said he was going to ask for assistance from the Coast Guard. Maybe Quint thought that if the Coast Guard helped in killing the shark, he wouldn't be paid.
I think it's more that Quint had something to prove to himself.
That there wasn't a shark in the ocean that he couldn't kill. He wanted revenge on all sharks. He wasn't going to be cheated out of it by having the Coast Guard kill the shark.
His being part of the surviving crew of the USS Indianapolis left him deeply flawed.

It was a ton of fun watching you take in a truly classic movie. Jaws is a classic for many, many reasons. And it still puts most modern movies to shame because it’s an extremely well-written film with terrific characters - something that many movies lack and try to make up for with over-bloated CGI effects. In the end, what matters most is story and characters. And it’s these two ingredients (plus many others) that make Jaws a film that people still talk about to this very day.
I would like to respond to your comment after the film regarding certain choices that characters made. The man and the woman in the beginning go swimming drunk because people do dumb shit all the time when they’re drunk. Swimming in the ocean, driving a car, shooting a gun... you name it, people have done it while inebriated. As for Quint destroying the radio on his own boat, he was a man who was obviously haunted by his past. He was a proud, capable man who was obviously an alpha male in most situations. Being a man that was used to being in control, Quint started to unravel the moment the shark showed up and continuously demonstrated to Quint that he was not going to be the one in control. Quint destroyed the radio because he was a frazzled mess and he couldn’t handle the shark beating him at his own game. Like most of the characters in Jaws, Quint is a multi-layered character and is one of the reasons people love this film almost 50 years after it first came out.

Jaws was a 15 cert up until the 90s in UK as I have a VHS copy purchased in 1988. Jaws 2 was a 15, Jaws 3 PG, and the fourth was a 15 upon release.
This was loosely based on a 1911 incident in New Jersey where a shark hung around a town and kill 4 people over the course of a week.
It swam up a river and ate someone in a swimming hole miles from the ocean.
I am from Matawan, it swam through the Sandy hook estuary and into Matawan Creek. My neighbors father was interviewed by the author of the book the film is based on as part of his research.

Believe it or not, using standard firearms against a shark isn't as effective as you think they may be. Having to shoot through water slows bullets down, thereby reducing their penetrating power. This is why Quint was using a harpoon gun and barrels. The barrels increase the drag on the shark, causing the shark to spend more and more energy to keep water flowing over its gills. As the shark expends more energy, it starts to get tired, and in turn, swims slower. Soon it runs out of energy and effectively suffocates.
The Mayor is definitely the true villain. The Shark is just hungry and has a Homo Sapiens craving.
And yet he shows up in Jaws 2...ha ha..

swimming drunk at night at mid-atlantic beaches, ie beaches from North Carolina thru Massachusetts, is fun as hell, and normally save because the only danger fish is a shark and they are so rare that if this movie never came out, no one on the east coast would even give it a passing thought.
and if you are now a fan of John Williams, watch the 1984 Olympic fanfare, he composed the music for that as well.

I grew up in new England and this is def true. We used to go night swimming all the time in Long Island sound. The water is always freezing up north so no sharks, especially way back in the 70’s when this came out.

Two weeks after I saw this a 20 foot great white was caught just up the coast from where I live, I've barely been in the ocean since. Jaws got to me, big time. Still love movie though.

this is complete nonsense. great whites are always comfortable in colder water. Great Whites have been in the mid atlantic, they have always gone into the carribean as well as up to northern canada.

Almost every actor besides Richard Dreyfuss, Roy Scheider, and Robert Shaw (I may have misspelled their names) were actually locals who lived on the island. The making of the movie is almost better than the movie.

Non Americans might not know that the 4th of July is a big Day for tourist towns as it is Americas Independence day holiday.
Everybody who lives in a US Ally country knows what the 4th of July is to Americans.
Australia has a Defense Treaty with the U.S., and they regularly send troops to the U.S. for training.
Sometimes the training visit happens close to or crosses into the 4th of July weekend. In which case the troops get permission to stay longer and enjoy the holiday themselves with their hosts.
This film had the opposite effect on me as a kid it started my love of sharks specially the Great White and made me want to go in the sea even more. Sharks are fascinating and beautifully creatures. 🦈❤️ I’d love to swim with them one day.
People thought bears were cute and fuzzy and tried to live with them until they got ate by them.

Timothy Burrows, when the commercials first arrived on network television, it came with a warning: "Some material may be too intense for younger viewers". I wonder if anybody remembers that. Great film then, great film now.
I do, indeed, remember such admonitions - AND how, as often as not, they served us minors as incentive as much as deterrent. Interestingly enough, it was yet another movie from Mr. Spielberg (to wit, the second Indiana Jones movie) that finally proved to be the catalyst for the new PG-13 rating...or so, at least, popular myth has it. 😉 😎

Hell, I grew up in Florida on the beach and 17C was always a nice and comfortable temp.

I would say Jaws 2 is also quite good too, some good scares and edge of your seat moments. But I would say don’t go past that, it does for me of course get a bit unrealistic.
I found it difficult to accept the follow on films since Brucie* was blown to smithereens in the premiered film. However, if the second film was named the "The Son of Jaws" or "The Cousin of Jaws," then I may have been tempted to watch them.

Loved your reaction. In the book, this movie was an adaptation from the novel-obviously, Hooper dies. He does not survive the shark cage scene. The producers used actual footage of a shark attacking a shark cage, so that sequence is of a real shark, and they wanted the footage to ‘make the cut’, so the script was changed to Hooper surviving.
Originally, as in the book, the least likely of the trio ends up killing the shark.

To this day, I still can't imagine how Robert Shaw screamed that long and that loudly without wrecking his vocal chords.
At that point, I recall there being only these ratings: G for everyone, PG for more mature audiences (some strong moments), R for 18 and older, and X for porn. In order to garner more audiences, Spielberg avoided the R rating by arguing that a shark doesn’t typically attack humans on land. It’s an exotic situation.

The shark was an animatronic. It didn't work well in the salt water. That's why the shark isn't seen for most of the movie. Spielberg called the shark Bruce after his lawyer.
They had some real shark footage sprinkled here and there as well. If memory serves, the amazing shot of the shark tangled up in the shark cage lines thrashing about was preexisting, or it happened during a real shark shoot in the Bahamas and it made such an impression that they worked it into the movie, adjusting the stuff that happened with Brody and Quint on the boat so they might be reacting to that happening below. They blend it all very well indeed. ☺️
@@karlmortoniv2951 that's correct. The shark cage scene was sprinkled with a real shark cage. The shark getting stuck was real footage from a dive. I thought it was in Australia but I could be mistaken on the location.
@@tjhorsegirl I’m not sure where my brain got the Bahamas from. You could be right about the cage bit having happened in Australia and the live shark shoot happened in the Bahamas, where the water is usually quite clear and warm, ideal for shooting underwater stuff.

Since the reaction video was two years ago, and I didn't read the old comments, it may have been mentioned ... but when "Chief Brody" said "you're gonna need a bigger boat" that wasn't in the script, it was an ad lib, one of the most famous ad libs ever. He was supposed to just back into the cabin of the boat and stand there staring out looking petrified and "Quint" would notice it and then look out. But a great line popped into Roy Scheider's head and he went with it. --- And a little trivia about the tiger shark that was used in the film, which also may have been mentioned, is it was already dead long enough to stink really bad. People were getting sick being near it. So they set up large fans off camera to blow fresh air over the actors and blow as much of the stench away as possible. That's why it looks like it's a breezy day and you see some people's hair moving. --- And while I'm at it. In another movie you reacted to, "Chasing Amy," the scene in the bar where "Alyssa" and "Banky" were exchanging stories of being hurt during sex, it came from the scene in "Jaws" where "Quint" and "Hooper" were comparing scars. The set/the booth was made to look very much like the cabin of "Quint's ship," including the windows and the hanging light. Even some of the dialog was partially used, like "that's permanent" after telling how she fell asleep while going down on a girl and the girl got so mad she dug her heel into "Alyssa" and when "Alyssa" said "my right knee is cut up all to shit like a kiddy's scissor class cut it up for paper dolls."

FUN FACT: the mechanical shark had many issues during the shootings, it never worked for most of the time. that's why we can see it clearly just in the last scenes, when it finally started to work as intended.
Here on the tubes somewhere is one of the sequels, with B-roll underwater footage without the matting mixed-in. Seeing the shark on the attack, while it’s attached to its contraption, was both still scary and hilarious.
One of the best films of all time! My personal second favorite of Spielberg's filmography, right behind Jurassic Park!

I think Quint smashed the radio because survival guilt. He made it through the USS Indianapolis sinking because of the help of others, he wasn’t going to accept the help again to defeat this shark. It was was going to be him or the shark this time

Fun note: Jaws was inspired by the 1916 shark attacks in Matawan, New Jersey (a coastal resort town). Though it's accepted now that the shark was a bull shark (which is how it got upstream into fresh water).
In the book alot of the business's on the island have ties to the Mafia, which is why the Mayor is so determined to keep the beaches open.
uhhh.. they still do here in 2021.. It's also kind of a "safe haven" for mobsters because living on an island, they watch the ferries for feds coming over....

This movie works on many levels. A simple adventure story or a allegory of man vs nature and also man vs his own greed.
Also Quint's arc about the perils of obsession and the handling of survivor's guilt.
If you’re looking for more older movies that still hold up well today, I recommend The Towering Inferno.
I suggest BULLITT (1968) or THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR (1975). :D

I highly recommend The Towering Inferno as well. Best natural disaster film, and the best film of showing the the multiple things that firefighters are able to do and not just fighting fires. This puts them through multiple challenges besides just fighting the fire. Also, does a great job at showing their bravery as well. Plus an all-star cast led by Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, Faye Dumaway, and Fred Astaire just to name a few of the A-list cast that is in this film.
Two more big disaster movies from that era: Earthquake (1974) and The Poseidon Adventure (1972)
Also Airport (1974), which spawned a series of similar airplane-in-distress movies before getting parodied by Airplane! (1980) - which itself was based on the script of Zero Hour (1957)
