Was given a rug kit with one of these back in the 70s. Never made it. Now I think I will make the rug for my young granddaughter. Had no idea how to use it. Thank you. Now I can give it a good try. I liked your video and found it very useful.

Great. Another person using a vintage punch tool or "speed carpet tool". I bought a "Danella tool" right before Christmas. I found a few videos under that name & saw a few vintage speed punch tool videos here on CZcams. Danella sold out after that. The clicking sound is very relaxing and rhythmic. For spacing with the Danella I use the side edge bar as a guide like a sewing pressure foot. I keep the bar edge on top and along the row next to it.
Hi Sarah, your technique tutorial is really well done, especially how you’ve demonstrated the mechanics of loop making. I’ve been a rug maker, hooker, puncher for decades, having grown up around the corner from the original Phentex factory. I’m currently punching a bath mat with phentex yarn on a vintage phentex frame. Neither the frames or punch needles are made any longer but can be found in thrift shops from time to time, as I have. The yarn is now made by Spinrite in Listowel, Ontario, Canada. This yarn is 100% Olefin, a tough man made fibre, great for mats that see a lot of wear. I like working with several elements at the same time in order to achieve nuanced colours and textures. So much fun! If you’d like to go down the rabbit hole further, let’s connect.

@PatLawson - I would love to make a bath mat! What adhesive do you use? Do you know of any good bathmat tutorials??
@@yankeh I prefer liquid latex for it’s flexibility. I’ve tried carpet glue but find it stiff. The latex has more ‘tack’ especially on a wood or tile floors.
@@yankeh sorry I hit reply before I was finished… I’m not aware of tutorials specifically about bath mats. I think the key is in the materials chosen I.e. yarns or fabrics that can withstand wear and dry reasonably quickly. I prefer synthetics mostly because they are resistant to moisture and dirt. Wool would work but it’s not as robust for cleaning. I toss my polyester mats in the washing machine frequently including those backed with latex.

Very cool. I almost bought a mechanical tool because those tufting guns are expensive and were sold out around the time I looked up how to tuft rugs. Some were out of stock for nearly a month! All I found were hand punch tools. I skipped on buying a mechanical tool for the time being because I couldn't find any instructions online 😅

Hey! In my punch needling I try to skip a lanes width when I'm needling because you get super dense over crowding and by the time you're done with it, the puffiness turns the whole piece into like a sphere because it bubbles out so much. I'd just make sure you don't get any bubbling on the nice side of the rug and you'll be good 😊

Ive got an old 1970’s Ronco kit similar to yours. Haven’t touched at as the instructions were none too clear, but this tutorial has helped me enormously. Will get it out and give it a go! Thank you🎉

Yes! Depending on what you want to do with it people use different methods, but most involve putting something sticky on the back and letting it dry. This tutorial is really good:

how do i have this tool

I just bought this phentex rug tufting however the yarn is not staying oon the needle what could I be doing wrong
It has to be threaded through. See ~4:55 in the video. Once it is threaded I've never had it fall out. Maybe have your loose tail end coming through be longer?
