The reason the song feels monotonous in relation to the editing(I think) is because of the time signature. This is the first time that I'm aware of that BLACKPINK has ever done a song that _wasn't_ in the typical "4 on the floor" time signature. For this song, it's actually in 6/8, not 4/4. That's why you can count it in groups of 6... "one two three four five six, one two three four five six." 6/8 is a type of waltz time. It has this rolling characteristic to it, like it's unending and eternal...like a locomotive chugging along.

Jordan is so kind for not criticizing much about this MV editing. He is not as excited as for other MVs he reacted to before.
I think it's cool that Pink Venom was released first, as if they knew what a lot of the reaction would be. A lot of the hate or criticism of Pink Venom was in comparison to their old stuff, either that it was too much like D4, KTL, and HYLT, or oppositely, because the chorus was an anti-drop it actually wasn't enough like the banger chorus' of D4, KTL, or HYLT. The hate went both ways, funnily enough. And this, almost in direct answer to that, is saying like it's lame to hate on us just by comparing us to our older stuff. They shut that down.
Oh, that could be it yeah. I was just thinking the opposite. I thought this would have been a great pre-release because it creates anticipation for that new sound they are talking about, but you're right. Pink venom is different compared to what blinks were used to and thats what the ‘‘keep talking, we shut you down'' is referring to. Now I realise, it was like a pre-emptative strike before delivering the ‘‘we are back/we've grown and we're better than ever'' message. It's a good marketing strategy too, now that I think about it. Blackpink basically rebranded themselves and their sound lmao 😂
oooooh that makes sense, mainly because when you listen to the album, all the songs that come after shut down doesn't sound like any other song of theirs. like, the only one that i think that has a vibe that is slightly similar to their older songs is ready to love, but that one also sounds completely different. i feel like shut down is them making a change of genre/music because even that song sounds NOTHING like what they've done before. this album is so well done, i love it

Lol I love Blackpink and made some of the criticisms cited above. It's not hate. Every work can be praised or criticized. Just because we thought it could be better doesn't mean we're hating on Blackpink. Shut Down joined my Spotify playlist as soon as I heard the violins, not a big fan of the MV though. Pink Venom does sound a lot like the other stuff mentioned, not the chorus, more like the bg sounds used, I'm kinda tired of hearing them. Shut down is refreshing to the ears.
@@elvillivle Sure, obviously it's fine to criticize -- I also said after my first few listens that I wasn't a fan of Pink Venom's chorus mostly due to the cadence/voice they use (it has since grown on me). But if your complaints are mostly in comparison to D4, KTL, or HYLT, that's less solid criticism and more about unfair personal wishes. Especially if as my original post stated, the complaints go both ways -- complain that Pink Venom is too much like D/K/H, but then also complain that the chorus isn't enough like them. When it gets into that territory, it starts to sound more like hate because...
... Comparisons are fine when it comes to personal taste -- everyone has their own fave songs and styles from BP and other artists. But it's far less fair to use as criticism. Just imagine a critic going "This song is bad because I wanted this part to sound exactly like D4 and this chorus to sound like HYLT, but I didn't want this verse to sound like KTL, and not for this bridge to sound like Pretty Savage, and this pre-chorus sounds new but I wanted it to be like Playing With Fire..." and so on and so on. For personal tastes that's fine, but that's not a decent criticism of music at all. Imagine you're the artist and that's the kinda stuff you hear after a new song, you'd 100% think of it as whiny/lame/silly hate because it's not actual criticism.
This song is PERFECTION like the MV the vocals the rapping the styling the beat its amazing ,blackpink came back with such a hit to shutup all the haters who are always saying that they're sticking to the same boring concept

When you were talking about Jisoo (7:51) IDKY but I legit started to cry. I'm literally so proud of her. Jisoo was always the "least favorite member", people called her a visual hole, and etc. I'm literally so happy, on what she overcame. She's the queen Jisoo. She has such a pretty voice, her visuals no no joke, she's an incredible actress, she's honest, she's funny, and so much more. I'm so glad she's at the top now.
Also I really like pink venom and this whole album! All songs are incredible. But guys, don't be disrespectful just because someone likes/dislikes a song you don't/do like. That's just stupid. Everyone as a different taste in music. If you don't want people to tell you your taste in music is bad, that you're lying when a song you like is good, or whatever. Then don't do it to other people. People can dislike/like songs. So let people do that. Stop thinking you have to have it your way.

hahha. I also noticed the slight editing things. There really aren't any rules, but I agree that it could have been more satisfying. I think it's because they were trying to match the scenes that felt satisfying in their original videos exactly, but it's out of sequence and more referential. Those medium shots are more satisfying when aligned with the choreography.
Something extra I want to add is I find it very interesting how they chose to sample from Paganini’s la Campanella, now I normally dislike when modern producers use classical pieces for their music but I feel like this adds to the story of the MV even more. Paganini surpassed many great violinist in his time and even changed classical music due to his untraditional way of playing and performing, they said he even sold his soul to the devil due to his immense talent, so I feel like the producer knew that and most likely got inspiration from Paganini to make this song for black pink cause they to broke many records and in a way changed Modern pop music
This comment needs to be pinned to bring more attention to the poetry of Shut Down through the references, including Paganini.
I'm a classical violinist. I personally find the sample a bit repetitive because they essentially only use like 4 bars or sth. I can understand using a sample, but hey, at least it's getting represented?

@@codexone2194 agree with this one. I'm a classical violinist too and the only thing i thought was "use the ending bar of that phrase PLEASE" which they ever only used twice. I quite liked the song, but I think they didn't use the piece and the many effects and variations they could've done with it just musically speaking. Not bad tho, the devil's violinist getting recognition like he deserves xd

The M/V is literally out of the world. The amount of references to the old M/Vs bringing back all the old eras. The lyrics, the music, vocals, the rap, the choreo, the sets just everything. This whole album is insane. This is what we wanted! This is perfection!

So I have listened to their "Born Pink" album a few times and I must say that their English tracks just blew me away. Especially, "Typa Girl," "Hard to Love," and "The Happiest Girl". The lyrics are so much more personal and relatable, rather than fillers like Ra-ta-ta-ta. Maybe due to their global success, the group seems a bit more distant to me, but with this album I am in love with BP all over again.

My understanding of the 3:50, where you talk about Jisoo's medium shot to the slightly wider medium shot, is that I think it's used to emphasise the lengthening of the ' beh' in 'bay-beh'.
