There’s plenty of things to test a person’s mettle out in the harsh Western territories. There are cattle rustlers trying to steal your stock. There are bandits looking to rob the 10:13 to Yuma. There’s all manner of critters and a desert environment looking to deal you the death card. Now, the recently-dead have started rising from prairie graves to assault the living. This town is turning into cowpies.
Zombicide: Undead or Alive brings the Zombie-blasting action to an all-new era and location, bringing players to the middle of the mythical Old West. There’s new Survivor types like the Gunslinger, Brawler, Townsfolk, and Faithful, each with their own, unique rules. Then, of course, there’s plenty of Zombies to destroy. New game mechanics like Balconies and the Train will test players in new ways.

0:08:24 - My General Opinion on Zombicide
0:10:18 - Differences in Undead or Alive
0:15:45 - Final Thoughts
0:18:08 - Recommendations
5.0 - My absolutely favorite games. You can pry them out of my cold dead hands.
4.5 - Love this game! At the same time missing something that would make it a 5. Could be hard to table, lacking variability, a little light, etc.
4.0 - Really great game, almost always keeping, although has meaningful complaints as to what takes away from the experience.
3.5 - Really enjoyed, don't love it, may lose out to better games but the idea of never playing again is a bit sad.
3.0 - A good game, would play and suggest with the right people, if I never played it again wouldn't lose any sleep.
2.5 - A game I'd play again , but will never suggest it myself
2.0 - A game I don't want to play again
1.5 - A game I can't find any reason to recommend
1.0 - A game that is just bad.

"Until you are overwhelmed by the horde of plastic taking you down" This should be the tag line for all CMON kickstarters.
Lol fair
This is my first Zombicide ever and I love it. I played mission 0, 1, 2 & 3 solo with 4 survivors each. What a nice puzzle. Really challenging. I found with 4 survivors you get to a point where you can no longer withstand the relentless hordes, which means you have to complete in time. I'm assuming with 6 survivors you can better keep them at bay.
Although I'm not a huge Western fan and I was a bit reluctant to pledge, I'm now absolutely loving the theme and wouldn't want to change for any other theme.
Can't wait to play it with my group. My only regret is not adding the 8 player expansion, which would make it more fun with 4 players.
I've added most other expansions, which allows to increase the difficulty even more :)
This one’s a blast. You gotta play this one pretty conservatively. My success rate drastically increased when I started prepping to deal with abominations and building spawn points before pressing forward, managing adrenaline for a fairly balanced party, and never thinking that I could afford to take a hit, or leave someone vulnerable hoping not to draw that extra activation. You gotta have a solid strategy for most missions and prep and use survivors strengths. Very rewarding when you get it right.
You are my new go to reviewer! I love the honest detail of your reviews both the good and the bad.
Thank you!!
i bought the ENTIRE kickstarter and already 3d printed the train, a wagon (leftovers from another game) and a little piano with a small bluetooth speaker in it to play an old timey player piano soundtrack. i like immersion. i wont play until theyre all painted (its a me thing) and i finish zombicide dark side... but im really looking forward to it! i wish i had people to play with but this is why i like these: you dont need friends on the same schedule as you.
When a survivor enters a building containing a corpse pile spawn and/or multiple corpse pile spawns, the only corpse pile spawn and/or corpse pile spawns that activate are the corpse pile spawns that are on the same tile inside the building the survivor entered.
Just got my pledge yesterday and I am really enjoying the difficulty. Vade Retro is almost necessary to keep the baddies at bay and it can also be a good method for stacking them up together for a dynamite throw 🧨
Invader was my introduction to Zombicide. I have since added Black Plague, Green Horde, Night of the Living Dead (purely for the IP and the challenge of painting in black and white) and 2nd Edition. Most of these have tons of extras but, unlike many other games, I do use most of them and I play a version of Zombicide at least 1 or 2 times per month and I am in the process of painting 2nd Edition. I originally backed Undead or Alive but cancelled, as at the time I was struggling for space and figured that I didn't need another Zombicide. Fast forward to now and I have more space and watching the playthroughs, decided that I should add it to my collection. I have the core pledge, stretch goals and Long dead walkers as a Christmas gift and I have bought the Guns and Gears box and the Steampunk extras. Debating if I want the Running Wild pack as well? Looking forward to getting it to the table on 25th. The challenge aspect doesn't phase me. I own and play Fireteam Zero and both Xenoshyft and Dreadmire, where I rarely win but still love them!
I wasn't interested in Marvel Zombies because even though I was an old fan of Marvel from way back (1969 with Pow comic in the UK) I am fed up of the IP. That's not to say that I won't end up buying it in the future?!
Bravo great review as always!!!! ;)
Been waiting for this video!
Hope you enjoyed!
I own 2nd Edition and Black Plague/Green Horde. I find 2nd Edition pretty simplistic, but I still enjoy it. This one looks amazing, but I'm already hundreds in on Zombicide games and accessories. Hard to pick the best - but love the information
As a pretty new Zombicide player (first owned version)...I will say I really enjoy this. Still need to play with the Horses and we'll see what the Steampunk Campaign is like, but what I found as a newer player, if you're looking to reduce the difficulty, you could simply not utilize the corpse pile spawns, and it's still a challenging game.
We've played a number of games without them...barely lost...and barely won (from the tutorial through the 2nd mission).
I’m all for all period type Zombicides. I want to make a Turtles in Time campaign with Zombicide. We are very close to having all the time periods needed, I believe. CMON needs to give us pirate and prehistoric games. Imagine zombie dinosaurs! Make it happen CMON.
Ty for this review!
Always :)
Played the whole basegame. Loved it. One of my favourites. It is a keeper🥰 now starting marvel zombies..
I can’t wait to try this one and I am going to figure out a way to get wolves and crows from BP in this system. Haven’t figured it out yet but I’ll find a way
This is the Zombicide I own and I prefer it to black plague. I play black plague if my friend brings it over and I have fun doing so, but as long as I'm not the one running it. it's more fiddly with the noise and doors. Undead or alive is a smoother experience for me. I agree with Zombie variety for sure, but I can shove cards from other zombicide and call it Zombicide Undead Plague, lol. Zombicide is fiddlier than other games, which is why Cthulhu death may die hits the table way more often than Zombicide. I still pledged for white death because of the theme and the characters it brings to the table (maybe an impulse buy but Zombicide holds its value, regardless of which one I decide to let go of in the end)
Im in the same boat. I thought I would get rid of this. But we are loving it so much
It's really good :)
I just wish we could get one version of Zombicide that works truly great at the 2p count
I think this one totally does.
Played for the first time with a friend, and found it fun but at some point would like to win. I think I'd like to pick up Z:BP but I'm so late in the game, do I need the KS add ons to enjoy BP?
If you need variety and have the Kickstarter daily special walker spawns try adding one as a group leader per a group of walker spawns like how Massive Darkness 2 works.
What are the rules for this scenario? I like that idea
Thanks!
Z:UoA is my first Z:KS. I'm years behind the curve on Z in general, managed to pick up a second hand copy of core 1st (modern) and Z:BP and enjoyed them but love the Western theme and was keen to back this all in (assisted through watching your guys TTS). I'm loving the play and finding it close to C:DMD regards difficulty... Are you going to make it or not.
Going to spend a lot of time painting everything up, adding 3D embellishments to the tiles, getting 3D train and wagon elements, etc.
Also considering reimplementing some of the original Z:BP elements - wolves becoming hyenas and crows becoming vultures (keeping with the theme)... Maybe throwing in an Abom leader for each (for good measure! 😜).
Glad to hear it's landing well for you and looking forward to seeing more of your playthrough content ❤️
Do you have to play the campaign for gears and guns as I'm not much of a campaign guy but like the idea of the steam weapons.
Alex, thanks for the video.
I have the all in Kickstarter edition and have been enjoying it.
Definitely losing more than winning.
I will be keeping this until Marvel Zombicide arrives.
Take care
I think the only additional walker types I'd like for this game are ones that fire guns like the flingers in invader. This game is so aggressive that I feel if there was 3 mov zombies like the wolves games would end almost immediately with bad card draws.
Gunslinger zombies would fit so well
This may be a dumb question but do the Vade Retro tokens respawn after using them, or do you only get two tokens to use that entire mission?
They respawn
Faithful can VR a zone within line of sight containing a zombie or zombies once per a turn by spending an action. The VR token goes back to the faith when all of the zombies in VR zone die or activate.
Thanks everyone! Greatly appreciated.
A couple of small points where you were technically incorrect. There are 5 classes in Undead or Alive counting the Engineer not 4 as stated. Zombicide 2nd Edition has the most zombie variety if you have the crossover cards to use all the 1st edition ones not Black Plague/Green Horde. We have found that using the 1st edition stuff in 2nd plus the optional rules such as multiple abominations make that game fairly comparable to Black Plague. Invader is still the weakest entry in the franchise if you ask me (assuming that you do not count Night of the Living Dead)
Do you think the coregame alone is difficult enough or do you need the expansions and the kickdstarter stuff to make it appealing?
Core game is enough, but the abominations and characters from the Exclusives are nice to have ...
I would pick up some additional abomimatons if you can. The core box only comes with one.
My friend who backed this sold his copy saying he likes Green Horde a lot more (hes a huge zombicide guy). For me, it didn't compete with Marvel Zombies.
Wow, and here I thought selling my Green Horde at cost to a friend was a big win-win. Hated the Trebuchet.
How about adding in the Wolfsburg Wolfs and dead eyed walkers, would that work nicely. They should be able to migrate in nicely and only stand out by card font, right?
Just got Undead or Alive goodies last week, and am excited to give it a whirl! I would love to see how you condense and combine your various Zombicide games, especially this one. Thanks.
Will be our first entry. I want the game to crush us. There is no game yet that crushed us except Eldritch Horror the harder AO.
Also we have only a pvp Western game (doomtown) and would love a western zombie game. Steampunk expansion is also taunting us.
I guess since we’re still waiting on marvel zombies I can fit a couple more iterations
@BoardgameCo - OK honest opinion please: This or Marvel Zombies? 🤔
Still marvel zombies but it's close
I just picked up the Guardians expansion…
Love zombicide
5/5 ...really enjoyable 😉
:)
I only need one and that is Marvel Zombies :)
It's a pretty solid one :)
Same. The fact that I have it coming is the only thing stopping me from grabbing the Undead or Alive KS edition from my OGS.
I just feel sorry for Multiple man.
Unlike black plague, I'm finding it very hard to sell off my all in unopened package for some reason... Even priced at a loss compared to the open market.
Well even at a loss you’re probably looking at a few hundred dollars. Around Christmas time people are already spending a lot buying gifts for others and all that so it’s likely the price - as good as it may be, could be too much for this time of year. I’m sure it’ll sell soon!
What do you have for sale? :0
Talk to me, Goose. Whatchu got?
Undead or Alive or Marvel Zombies? Better experience?
I got it! The answer is none.
This or marvel zombies?
Let's see if CMON will actually support this one with more zombie variation through expansions.
2nd Edition with the zombie variations from 1st Edition expansions is quite good (toxic, berserker, skinner, dogz, crowz, seeker). I will probably try to carry those zombies over into Marvel too.
I’ve never lost a game of Zombicide 2cd edition it is not that hard
2cd?
