  • Some of the Second World War's most famous tanks and military vehicles have a rather strange feature on them. When looking at tanks such as Fury, you'll notice that it has a number of logs tied to the side of the vehicle. T-34 tanks and also other Shermans would have wooden tree trunks or logs tied to the side by their tank crews.
This was done for two incredible reasons during World War 2. One of them was due to the fact that the Russian terrain on the Eastern Front was completely horrendous during two seasons each year. Frost and Snow would melt, and combined with rain the Russian roads would become incredibly boggy. Soviet Tanks such as the T-34 would use the logs as traction to help them get out of boggy conditions if they were stuck.
Another reason why this happened is to add a small amount of additional armour on the side of the tanks, and to help cushion the impact from a HEAT shell.
