Funny I think I made it through to the Hot Rock. Saw them for that tour and another tour later and then saw them several years ago after being very disconnected. Never watched Portlandia. I knew very few songs. But Carrie stood on top of the drum kit in a pleated leather skirt and that was what stuck in my mind.❤

@@jjmachuca There have definitely been some very loud complaints about the remix, but they are from a fairly small minority of Replacements fans. I'm not even close to one of the doubters myself, though -- on the whole I love the remix. (I do prefer the original mix of "Here Comes a Regular," however.)

    • @rdrrr
      @rdrrr Před 2 měsíci

@@cherokeeflan Yeah, I've heard that sentiment a lot and I agree. The additional piano on "Regular" is subtraction by addition and Tommy Ramone's thin, reverb-y mix actually helps "Regular" out - it gives it a haunted feel.
Everything else is better and it's not even close. Even the throwaways (Thunder, Clown) are great now. Not saying they're suddenly _good songs_ - it still mystifies me that Westerberg had Nowhere Is My Home in his back pocket and decided that Lay It Down Clown needed to be on the album - but the mix gives them enough punch to get over on attitude alone.

In general, I’m not a fan or remixes or remasters, etc. Call me a philistine but I want to hear the songs sound exactly as I remember them, regardless if someone thinks they can be improved. If the songs were good enough the first time, then they’re good enough 20 years later. Too much revisionist stuff across the board in the world. My two cents. And if I had a tv show about my life, I’d want Bastards of Young to be the theme song

I saw Stiff Little Fingers in London and the singer (Jake Burns) looked very much like a singer in a band I saw in a pub Lisburn , Northern Ireland (one of few that British soldiers were allowed to drink in) singing Rory Challenger songs. I still to this day wonder if the young lad in that band was Jake Burns, pre punk. I also saw the Modettes quite a few times.

Love "What's in My Bag," loved this one, very wry, informative, and entertaining...but...in fairness to Mark Knopfler "Lady Writer" isn't him ragging on some "lady" interviewer. It's about the character in the song seeing a writer/historian (hence references to "history" and "the Virgin Mary") on television (supposedly English historian and novelist Marina Warner) who reminds him surfacely of his ex. She did happen to be a looker so I can't say it's completely devoid of any ingrained sexism, but not in the way described by Carrie. Regardless, the boy can play.

Yes and your rich old man
You know he'd call her a dead ringer
    You got the same command
Plus your mother was a jazz singer
Just the way that her hair fell down around her face
Then I recall my fall from grace
(Oh yeah) Another time, another place

"Wonderin'" is Neil Young's most hilarious video. The '50s throwback was unpopular and YET Billy Joel released similar throwback "Innocent Man" one week later. I enjoy Neil's pink period, maybe more than he intended!

The Replacements Tim remix was done to strip off some of the commercial sheen that was added to the original mix.
I listened to Sorry Mom, Hootenanny, and Let It Be and absolutely loved the albums but i remember feeling a bit underwhelmed by Tim even though the songs were uniformly excellent. I’m looking forward to hearing the remix.

Tim the Let it Be version is so much better, if that’s possible. The drums finally sound good. There are guitar parts that weren’t there before. The old Tim was great, but this one is better. IMO. Which is unwarranted. Cheers.

That Neil Young album is a guilty pleasure. It's catchy and retro like the albums Nick Lowe was putting out in the early 80s, but it is also bitingly satiric and funny as hell. The only joke about the Shocking Pinks album that wears out its welcome is the obscene amounts of reverb. They could have slathered it on one song and sold the gag, but the entire record is awash in it. A small quibble about an album that I otherwise love and always end up singing along to. Add in that great album cover and the hilarious music videos Neil made to support the album and it's a minor stealth classic. And speaking of satire, watching this interview made me realize that Carrie may have partly based Portlandia's Toni & Candace characters on Corin and the bitter brand of feminism that still seethes behind many of the things she says. I love Sleater-Kinney, but it's good to know that Corin is the one with a socio-political agenda while Carrie has always been more of just a punk-rock fanboy. Listening to her talk about music makes her so relatable.
