He's like an excited little kid this is so wholesome
because he cant act
@@BenQotsa hahahahahaha
one of the best episodes i've seen. This video gives me so much respect for Ethan, seems like such a genuine good guy.
I would also recommend his Closet Picks video on Criterion's youtube page if you're into films. Really enjoyable, and more evidence that he knows his stuff.
Seems very humble. Would love to meet him one day
They dont get paid for these either, they do them because; they already live in LA., they LOVE music, and they want to promote their colleagues in the performing arts community, besides, NONE of the celebrities they've had on need any more money, fame, or ...ahem...female companionship... they're fat, happy ,and looking to contribute to anything they really believe in ,now that they have 1000+yrs worth of blue collar wages stored up in Citibank, or Chase, and more free time than is healthy to squander...I would bet a weeks pay that Hawk thanked THEM for the slot, when he left the store.
Never seen the guy in a BAD movie, he's very underrated. My favorite though was TRAINING DAY.
I dont mean to be off topic but does anybody know of a method to log back into an Instagram account??
I was dumb forgot my password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me
Ethan Hawke needs to do a music podcast. I'd listen to that every day. What a great episode this was.
There's a podcast on actors on Google play music. Look up "podcasts" on the tab and look up Chris Hardwick. Ethan Hawke is there 👍
great idea, i will produce that pod.
David Lynch - What's In My Bag? MAKE IT HAPPEN
Or Werner Herzog!
We’ve invited them both but it hasn’t ever worked out.
@@amoeba thanks for trying. Maybe tell Werner that David will come if he does and visa versa....
Or Brad Pitt. Then let him ask you "What's in the bag? "
Lynch:
"And for my first pick, one of the most inspiring artists i know of"
(Pulls out Merzbow records)
This guy refuses to age and his taste in music is impeccable.
go down on him then
@@robr2303 such a cringeworthy comment.
refuses to age? this guy looks like old beef jerky now. imagine a woman aging this badly and the comments 🤦
@@robr2303 Stfu
That’s a stretch! You don’t notice his grey temples and forehead wrinkles? And greying beard? Ageless? No, but then no one really is. I like Ethan Hawke but he’s still only human.
Gotta love people who love music and who can talk about it in an eloquent way.
Gotta love farts
Dudes a killer actor makes sense he has killer taste in music. Hes plugged in, I've always dug his vibe. Noice
Noice.
He was phenomenal in First Reformed
Ethan Hawke is waaaaaayyyyyy too smart for Hollywood. Awesome video
HJ Mcpaid there’s a funny moment in some interview he did a while back, (can’t remember which) where the interviewer asks him “when you lived in Hollywood....” and Ethan Hawks politely interrupts “Sorry, I’ve never lived in Hollywood. I live in New York and I’ve done movies in LA but I’ve never lived in Hollywood.”
Thought that was funny.
Agree.
Seems like a typical Hollywood limousine liberal to me
@@dx315 🤡
@@WWMMWWWMMMWWWWMMMM well done did you learn that phrase via infowars, fox or Joe Rogan? Pat yourself on the back little boy
Can every episode just be Ethan Hawke talking about music or whatever he wants?
I'd watch it. This was awesome, he's so passionate about the art and know's what he's talking about.
Right? I love listening to him speak. One of few celebrities that respects the arts and equally gives it credit. Hes passionate about music and film.
I approve this message!
Ethan is a bad ass and genuinely nice guy. I met him in the 90s when he every teen girl's heartthrob. I had guessed he was pompous and a pretty boy. Nope. This guy is the real deal, true blue man.
That's the impression I got from him in this interview .
I could hear him talk at length about anything. Such a thoughtful and thorough individual.
Didn't expect this authenticity from a 1st row Hollywood star, I suppose prejudices are just like that. You gotta have a great human sensibility to talk that way about Lightnin' Hopkins and van Zandt, they are indeed immense artists. Great wimb here
Was hesitant about clicking this but Lord it was so great
I just imagine Jessie is in the record store and telling us all of the music he loves. Celine is standing off to the side watching lovingly and smiling. 🥰
This is maybe my favourite episode of What's in My Bag yet. I have always been an Ethan Hawke fan, but as a musician with an immense respect and value for music history and the bigger story behind the songwriters, Ethan's knowledge, understanding, passion, and tastes impress and entertain me beyond end.
This is one of my favorite what's in my bag episodes already.
I'm eager to start researching all those artists.
Thanks Amoeba and Ethan Hawk.
This is why I watch this channel. Great actor, and taste in music.
He knows what he likes and knows the history. How does someone get there? Curiosity in not just about music, but life in general. There is genius and authenticity in every genre of music, all you gotta do is know when you hear it. It takes time to cultivate it.
Too few people know about Townes Van Zandt!
My stepfather introduced me to Townes Van Zandt!
If everyone on earth knew about Townes Van Zandt...it still wouldn't be enough.
I think he and John Prine are in the same boat. Other musicians love them, and cover their songs, but somehow they never got the general acclaim from the public at large that they deserved.
@@carlrosenzweig1867 basically the country folk version of your favorite rapper's favorite rapper.
To blatantly rip off Steve Earle: "I will stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots screaming that Townes Van Zandt is the greatest American songwriter."
He must be the luckiest guy ever, he got a chance to raid the criterion closet and now amoeba
Ethan Hawke is so passionate about the things he likes, it's refreshing to hear someone thoughtful and sincere.
Man, that's a GREAT episode. Eloquent, passionate guest + many intriguing music discoveries + perfect editing!
Thank you, Amoeba.
Your editor absolutely smashed this. Great cut. That Kap section was 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Totally! I loved the "send hate mail to"-section! ^^
myname ismud he was told by a veteran of the military that kneeling would be a peaceful way to protest. How is he a phony if he literally ended his career for this cause? Yes, he was benched, but if you think he couldn’t have been a backup and a chance to get back to form, you’re not being truthful or you have no idea what you’re taking about.
@myname ismud Wow... He was benched ? So what ? Many QBs have had long careers even thoough they were benched at some point.
"I know a phony when I see one" Spider sense ?
Ethan is really impressive with his musical knowledge. He has great taste in music. I had no idea he was into old school blues and country.
Hello there. Thank-you for your lovely words, I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far?
I’ve always liked Ethan hawke as an actor and as a person but I like him 1000x more now
I need more of Ethan Hawke talking about music & stuff in my life. Thank you Amoeba.
Every time I watch a video with Ethan Hawke, I admire him more and more. A genuinely passionate, intelligent, thoughtful guy.
I feel like i needed this, hate all the pop country that has taken over my generation these days but I KNOW theres good country out there, just never knew how to find it. Got a lot of listening to do this week. Mad respect to Ethan, I had no Idea what to expect and was oh so very pleasantly surprised. Gonna go watch Brooklyns Finest now!
Check out Hank III
Tyler Childers, sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton and Colter Wall are some great newer artists that are ushering in this new Renaissance of folk/ country. I agree this pop country shit is why people say they like everything but country. Cause that ain't country sweetheart, that's trash
I love that before he showed what he picked, Ethan promoted Amoeba. Nice dude.
Please get Mike Patton!!!!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏
PLEASE! YEAH, GOD, PLEASE!
That would be out of this motherfucking world
Need an hour long episode to cover what he'd want lol
YES PLEASE!! POR FAVOR!
I approve this message!
I have a whole new respect for Etahn Hawke. Not that I didn't before, but this is one of the most interesting collection to date, I believe.
This is one of the best "What's in my bag" in recent memory. I want to check out some of the artists that he mentioned.
Best episode ever. He has incredible taste and everything he likes is connected to each other someway! He's very articulate too which is always a nice change of pace.
I always learn something when I watch Ethan. So fun to see what sparks his mind.
Just repeating what's already been said; this episode is top notch, that was really fun listening to Ethan speak about his picks.
First Reformed... Best Movie of the Year! Ethan Hawke will win the best actor Oscar for it!
Agreed one of the best performances of the year
I rented it off Redbox and my DVD player wouldn't play it but I was told it was really good
He should, at least. Amazing.
When I heard Ethan Hawke was going to be in a movie directed by Paul Schrader, I knew I had to see it, regardless of what is was about.
He'll probably be nominated, but I seriously doubt he'll win.
Damn his answers are soo enthusiastically informational. I’d be like “It sounded really good and I wanted to own the album”
Ethan has music knowledge chops off the charts. What a cool cat he is
Oh I just know I'm going to be back here watching this one again and again
This has to be the best guest I've seen yet and I've seen a hundred probably.
I've always known that you are a cool guy, with a huge passion and culture for music. And for literature, which makes me melt like caramelized sugar.
I respect and admire you. I would like to be your friend
The Walkmen was such underrated band.
Fun, super interesting music & background ,and v humble guy. One of the best episodes
I’m watching this like someone having a deep conversation with their spouse realizing that they are obsessed with this person.
So many of my favorite artists and actors love and adore John Prine, after listening to him for about a year, his death really hurt my soul and probably theirs too. RIP John Prine
Thank you very much for your lovely words, I really do appreciate. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far?
What Ethan Hawke said about kneeling down to the flag - is EXACTLY right.
Not really, though.
@@tripps1620 Except he is right. The freedom to protest is one of the beauties that American grants to us citizens, yet people like Kaepernick are crucified for doing it.
@@BIGxBOSSxx1 the NFL is a private company, if they choose to change their policy regarding the national anthem because ratings are plummeting they have the right to do that. Which is another great thing about the country. The NFL never said these guys couldn't protest on their own time, they said they couldn't protest on the NFLs time.
Tripp Sheffield If you think I’m just talking about what the NFL chose to do with him, you aren’t paying attention.
@@BIGxBOSSxx1 that's what it's about...he is not allowed to do that, end of story. And it is 100% constitutional for the NFL to say he is not allowed to do that.
Ethan Hawke has been high on my list, for a long time, of someone I want to hang out with and talk movies and music.
Just so great to know he's a fan of Hamilton Leithauser
I would never ever expect Ethan to have such a deep insight and dive into country music, moreover, not the obvious one. Great video.
@@ethanhawke8369 Hard to pick just one:-). Just between you and me - I guess that would be Snow Falling on Cedars or Gattaca.
@@ethanhawke8369 Poland
@@ethanhawke8369 Yes but it doesn't involve impersonating.
I would listen to Ethan Hawke talk about ANY music he wanted to. Then it turns out it's really quite good! And as a plus, he stans Kaepernick like the bona fide great guy he is. Thanks Ethan!
Had to come back to this video to write that I watched Heartworn Highways after I watched this, and it did something to me. Really opened me up to an area of music that I didnt know a whole lot about. I really reccomend it to pretty much anyone. Thank you Ethan and Amoeba for helping me find it!
He's a magnetic person for sure. Pure class
Thank you Ethan Hawke for putting me onto Townes Van Zandt and Heartworn Highways. I am forever grateful.
Man.......that was the most enjoyable 10 minutes I've had in a long time! Top man Ethan.......
This gotta be one of the best "What's In My Bag?" in the history of mankind. How cool was that?!!!
I love this dude. Most of my friends and family reject country music, but there can be so much depth,, rebellion and emotion in the genre.
One of my favorite actors! I love how enthusiastic he is about his selections!
Ethan Hawke is an American treasure!
Hello there. Thank-you for your love and care throughout my career.. I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far?
Dude, gotta check out that first movie. Sounds like vibes
Go and watch it. It truly is something out of this world. It brought me to tears.
One of the best episodes!
I love this dude, he's so cool and kind ♡
Hello there. Thank-you for your love and care throughout my career.. I really do appreciate it. Tell me what's your favorite movie of all my movies you have seen so far?
Gattaca is one of my favourite movies of all time. Recommend it to anyone
I love that movie!! :D .
Yes sir.. "There's more vodka in this piss than there is piss!!!!!"
Me too....
Mine too. Marked my childhood and teenage years.
He's such a genuine good person
Townes Van Zandt is probably the best American songwriter / storyteller of the 20th century.
ONE of the Best Amoeba Vids!!!
Love the Lightnin' Hopkins shutout. An American legend.
I literally had to pause this video every 30" to write down each record he mentioned to look it up. AWSOME taste in music, really!
I could listen to this guy talk about music all day.
man, this hit the spot!
Man HUGE respect for Ethan, the guy is a legend, now please get Mike Patton in here!!!
(Or Jonny Greenwood that would be nice)
The most underrated actor of a generation. Much love and respect to Ethan Hawke.
More of a blues lover than country myself but I checked out Blaze Foley after Ethan's biopic came out and I trust this man's taste in anything. I do appreciate old school country storytelling and it seems like he appreciates the difference between sincere honest country music and rubbish "yee haw, pick up trucks and whisky" songs that pass for country these days.
Ethan seems like a really cool guy. I'm not really into country music but he gets me excited and interested to know more!
Best "What's in My Bag?" ever!!!!!!!! Such awesome insight into music! I've always loved Ethan!!!!!

One of my favourites - great episode.
So so so glad I clicked on this. Love every one of these albums now!
The same way Colin takes a knee when the anthem plays, people can choose to not watch his games or agree with his way of doing things freedom goes both ways God bless America :)
I guess that's why the NFL has higher ratings than ever.
Fantastic episode. Ethan Hawke is an awesome actor and person.
There were a couple maroons in the comments over the kneeling issue, but overall it was pretty civil. I think that speaks to your channel and the audience that your work is drawing. Kudos.
This was beautifully done. Go, Ethan Hawk, and congratulations on your new movie!!!🎉🎉🍀🍀🍀🍀
Best bag of 2018, he’s filled with passion & wisdom & each hand selected record reflects that
Townes Van Zandt is definitely one of the greatest lyricists to ever put ink to paper.
What a well-produced video! Awesome ❤
Hey, thanks!
i honestly learned of a lot of bands from this interview. have to sift through a lotta crap to find some gems so it's best to see other's who have done the hard digging for us
Ethan Hawke is such a king!!!

I needed this
Get Mike Patton! Love you amoebaaaaaa! Yay, what a beautiful episodr
No
Ethan really had a good choice of music.. Awesomeness
I just love Ethan’s enthusiasm.
A man of culture.
My respect!
I just listened to the Hamilton Leithauser album he picked at 4:02. It is a really, really solid album. It's like Pet sounds (Beach Boys album) intertwined with a western movie.
Great recommendation!
I have watched 100,s of what’s in my bag but Ethan,s taste in music is top drawer
Like nearly everyone else commenting is saying, dude loves what he loves and has a great way of talking about it. Amazing episode.
I hadn't heard of most of this artists as its not my taste, but damn he made me want to check them out. This & the Jason Mantzoukas episode share a similar enthusiasm.
If yall could ever make it happen, please do a 'What's in my bag' with Zoë Kravitz!!!
Ethan Hawke knows a thing or two about what truly good music and song writing is all about. Great episode!
Best What's in My Bag to date!! Townes!!!!!!!
Wish this was 4 hours long
Really enjoyed This episode, Way to go Ethan x
