  • Jessye Norman, the lady who turned opera into a unique experience and became a household name thanks, in part, to Ghent Flanders Festival, will come to Ghent to say goodbye. A Spirituals singer, dramatic soprano, mezzo or contralto, a "Falcon" voice, a jazz diva: Norman's voice is so rich and versatile that she is impossible to pigeonhole! In 1982, she presented her first jazz concert with "A Great Day in the Morning", today she will be in Ghent with "American Masters".
In addition to contributing to the anthology of the voice, Miss Norman attended several important political events of recent history, performing the "Marseillaise" at Place de la Concorde (Paris) to mark the 200th anniversary of the French revolution (1989), singing at Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' funeral in 1993, for Bill Clinton in 1997 and at Ground Zero 11 years ago.
She has sung all major operas with a string of famous artists, from the Scala to the Metropolitan, she appeared at all major festivals-from Edinburgh to Avignon-and today, she will perform in Ghent at the occasion of the Festival's 55th edition.

I was very fortunate to hear this program live this past Sunday at Dennison University in Granville Ohio, on the same stage where the legendary Leontyne Price gave her penultimate recital 15 years ago. She offered no classical or operatic selections, but her interpretations of American musical theater were sung in full operatic voice. I didn't expect her non classical rep to be so exciting but OMG.....she had this opera snob moving in his seat. Thank you, Ms Norman, for your continued artistry.

This Famous Opera singer Jessye Norman has the most beautiful voice in the world. I love to hear young Disney singer Allison Jones sing also.. Allison won a national singing contest at age 11 singing Opera/ both ladies are from the home of the famous James Brown.
