    I myself have made many axes and knives over the years mainly out of leaf springs. I know what iam doing when it comes to heat treating and the results always seem to be perfectly fine for chopping through hard wood. Which really in my opinion isn’t that impressive. But when I try to chopping harder things like deer antler or bone I always get little nicks or deflections in my edge. But I recently got my hands on one of these Russian axes and put a decent edge in it and chopped on a piece of mild steel. Not even a nick or deflection. Now that to me is impressive. Highly recommended getting one of these axes if you can. What ever those Russians did to make them, they sure did it right. Only other edged tools I’ve seen that can compare is knives made from super steels like cpm 3v and those are expensive and to make one yourself from that steel you need a temperature controlled oven.

    I am from Russia it is ZIK ( zlatoust instrumental factory ) these axes were produced 1956-1970 years, and many of them are stored at military warehouses ))
    У7 steel ( see the stamp ) is really high endurance steel, as a comparison it is close to AUS 8 by it's features...
    If you suddenly stroke very hard wood like oak, this steel will not crack, but may be need to be sharpen))
    The design of the blade and handle is really multipurpose - you can doo any work, as a comparison fiskars not so convenient...

      AUS8 - нержавеющая. У7- углеродистая. Ей аналог что-то похожее на 1070

    I used to hate the profile of the Eastern European axe, it has grown on me for sure. I'm looking for one now.
    Ive seen how much woodworking they use these for and want to try it for myself.

    That's a 23° chisel grind right? So it's essentially 23° inclusive, which is pretty crazy. That's like a Japanese sushi knife angle!
    Which coal cracker bushcraft video did he mention the sharpening angle on?

    Ручка сделана из берёзы, так как больше ничего такого подходящего нет у нас и в таком количестве. А болтается из-за того, что береза усыхает. Перед использованием топоры часто замачивают в воде. Это Россия bro)

      @@SA2CLC you need to know R6M5 (harder that glass, but still steel) steel and R18 (extremely good steels for knife or other cut tools (sry for my english, in Russia you really don't need it, but only for communicate with peoples around the planet)

    You need some help on your file work. Files don’t cut sideways like your using it. Use the whole file and move at an angle. Also, do you really think anybody used a gauge like that to sharpen it in the field?

      @evanrosser3038 Před 4 lety +1

      A file does cut sideways like that...its called draw filing. It makes a much much more even surface
