    I also have that first axe you showed (the 3 lb one). I bought it from a Ukrainian guy. It’s absolutely a full size axe but I haven’t seen anybody hang it on anything longer than a 24 inch handle. Most are 19-24.
    That axe would have been used in prisons and gulag camps in some of the harshest conditions on earth. It’s a solid axe with great steel and a fascinating history

    First axe that shown in the video is made in Izhstahl factory in 1964..70, steel U8, type A2 - some people still calling it "GPZ" axe, but its not. There was also an improved version of that axe in 1980..92, made of chrome-vanadium steel. The second, smaller axe, made in a prison in 1974..80s, steel U7, type B2. The last one is a modern "Trud Vacha" axe, steel 60G, type B2 or B3. Nowadays, such axe costs 7$ in a store))

    Dan? Interesting you post this, because four days ago, I finally received an Axe which a dear Russian friend of mine helped me get. I will tell you though, it’s not so easy to get an Axe out of Russia. Why you ask? Because they still consider them to be potential items that could be used as weapons. It’s only because of my friend who lives in Moscow that helped with filing out the paper work. Not to mention the first Axe that we attempted to ship was sent back. The Blacksmith was kind enough to ship him another one. I would like to send you a photo if your interested in seeing it. It’s called the “Boar.” It’s a beast! It’s exactly what you or I would expect from a Russian Axe. It’s by far my favorite Axe now.....and I own many. Let me know if you’d like to see a photo of it. -Stephen, Ohio

    I see a bunch of these axes on eBay for sale from Ukraine dated from the 1950's thru the 1970's. Does anyone know which ones are made from the good steel that he is talking about in this video? I assume that the ones from the 1950's probably are a better steel. I see some are U7 and U8 steel.

    Etsy has these. I found one where the head is cocked just a little towards the handle (clockwise). Looks like they did this on purpose to ease carving/cutting. It came with a disclaimer in Russian, which I had to use Google translate. It said, "Do now consume more than a liter of vodka while using this tool." (just kidding).

    These are actually decent axes, you can actually see the guy in the doc happy people using this axe in the scene where he cuts and notches the two trees making one of his traps. The other axes that Dan shows in this video are just older axes. They definitely are better than the newer one, but you can’t throw it out, it’s a lot better than the junk you commonly get in any store in the US. I would definitely recommend this axe has a great handle, can be modified and fixed up to be a great axe. I disagree with Dan on this because he really just says it feels like it’s not as good, but I have actually used the axe and it holds a great edge.

    Looks like it might be a late soviet model, or altogether a knockoff to impress the hipster kids. The same thing happened with the soviet Baikal shotguns; I have one from the 70s - it's rock solid. It's not a perfect fit, it's not a competition grade skeet gun or anything, but it runs good, it's fairly light. Good for the skeet field and great for the bush. You can still buy them now, but they're made in "Canada" (Chinese) and they are _JUNK_. You run 5000 rounds through them and you're going to start to have problems.

    Howdy. Since this is an axe video and I've been looking for a way to contact you on an axe (handle) issue, I'll grab it and hopefully you'll read it and maybe respond. A while back on a discussion of axes you mentioned that your go to handle company was Beaver Tooth. I needed a 24" double-bit axe handle so I contacted them and ordered one WEEKS ago, and other than the order acknowledgement...NOTHING. I've emailed them 3 times with absolutely no response. You might want to rethink your endorsement of this company. It is really frustrating. My money is tied up, and I can't get anything, not even a "Gotcha" rip off note.

      @jamesfleming555 Před 5 lety

      Thanks for responding Caveat emptor I guess. I tried them because of your reference, and because finding good handles is hard to do. The local hardware stores carry little and that mostly not properly cut with the grain of the wood. I've had 50-50 success with House Handle Company; but they were at least always prompt and responded to questions. Thanks again for responding. I really like most of what you do on the channel.
