  • Are you better off with partisan politics at the local level? Will Alberta benefit from its provincial government inserting itself into funding agreements between municipalities and the feds? As Premier Danielle Smith's UCP government rolls out Bill 18 - the Provincial Priorities Act - and opens the door for municipal political parties, we ask, "What does it all mean for YOU?"
3:05 | Alberta Municipalities president Tyler Gandam and past presidents Cathy Heron and Lisa Holmes discuss how Alberta's most prominent new legislation will impact everyday service delivery and infrastructure development in communities across the province.
    LEARN MORE: www.abmunis.ca/news/bill-18-w...
39:15 | Lisa Holmes responds to Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton's assessment of (Lisa's boss) Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi's "defiant and aggressive" Twitter posts aimed at Premier Smith. Lisa and Cathy go on to discuss Andre Corbould's seemingly sudden departure as Edmonton city manager, security threats facing politicians and public figures, and the upcoming wildfire season.

Here's a little tidbit for those of you following the events in Chestermere, as well as the proposed changes to the Municipal Governance Act.
Municipalities DO NOT exists under the Canadian Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land.
The Provincial government is responsible for ALL matters that Municipal Governments deal with. The Government created the Ministry of Municipalities to oversee local matters.
The Provincial Government, with the support of a majority of the legislature created the Ministry of Municipalities on December 20, 1911, 6 years after entering into confederation.
Since then, ALL matters of municipal affairs are under the direction of the Minister of Municipalities. Municipalities ONLY EXIST as an act of the legislature and therefore an act of the legislature comprised of duly elected officials, with a majority vote can alter, amend, strike, dissolve, or otherwise change the Municipal Governance Act at any time, by any government. This is not corruption, it is the law as set forth through exercise of democracy.
There are people out there, (let's call them Victim Hunters,) who are trying to not only elevate themselves by using the tribulations of others but also convince you of two very dangerous falsehoods:
1- They are trying to convince you that by "interfering" with municipal affairs the current government is trying to "take power" from the municipalities. This is FALSE- the Ministry of Municipalities ALREADY holds ALL power over municipalities. Remember that municipalities ONLY EXIST AS AN ACT of the legislature.
2- They claim that the government is corrupt due to them "taking power," or "interfering" with municipalities is justification for people to not be civically engaged in a constructive manner with the current government. If you want to make change to the way the Province interacts with your municipality, (the MGA,) then you MUST be involved and do the work to make the change.
I'm growing very tired of watching this occur all around me. It seems that more often than not there are a few people "rage farming" by only telling part of the story and they are causing really, really potentially terrible problems for the rest of us. Even worse, people are hyper-sensitive about government and are willing to readily accept only one-side of the story because it confirms their notion that "everyone is corrupt, all government and politicians are evil".
We have problems, for sure. I hope people will open their eyes very, very soon and notice that certain people are using our problems as a method to elevate themselves and act on a deep-seated hatred towards a particular party. What I'm seeing is not conducive to positive change and will hurt us all in the end.
Anyhow, I'll just get back to the kitchen, where I belong.
      -Chris
PS- I will point out, again, that this issue along with these problems could be dealt with swiftly and fully. Would you like your county or city to have sovereign discretion in matters of elections etc? All paths lead to Alberta Independence. An independent and sovereign Alberta could, through Constitutionally enshrined law, acknowledge municipalities as jurisdictions that are sovereign in the area of self-government.
All paths lead to Alberta Independence.

My parents operated 3 different small businesses and 2 were located into same town. The ppl who were in charge of town council were dead set against my father no matter what the issue or whenever he confronted town officials about their shady tax measures and building codes and regulations. I swear they enjoyed creating a problem just to cause aggravation. Example: 1 property that operated a restaurant and dining room on main floor and second story having 5 rental units. When town was replacing aged infrastructure water and sewer lines my father requested having a second water line installed going into our property. We were charged with 7 water supply taxes and 7 sewer line taxes while having only 1 waterline into the building. Wasn’t an unreasonable request and it caused such an uproar from town officials. Yet business couple buildings from ours on other side of road was automatically provided multiple water lines into their property without any problems whatsoever.

Lets talk facts about this new legislation: It applies to Edmonton and Calgary only. The Provincial parties are not eligible to be part of any civic party. Joining a Party is just an Option!! It is not required!! The reason political parties in Edm and Calgary are being considered is because the Unions are backing many candidates with tons of money, and NO voter gets to see this. As a voter myself, I see 15 options for mayor at election time. What do
they believe in and what is their platform?? Fact is I have no Idea. Well if there are 4 parties, I can study their platform and then I know what they stand for. Sadly, the current Calgary City politicians are useless. They were voted into office because they received the most financial support from Unions and they had the most signs, and the most media adds. So, these incompetent leaders are running Calgary. And the same is True for Edmonton.

@@mikearchibald744 I guess you do not understand how the equalization payment works. Quebec gets an additional $12 billion from taxes collected in other provinces and the people of Alberta are the biggest contributors.
Regarding the pipeline to the west coast, Kinder Morgan (Private owner) were the owners of this line and had applied to expand it. They were prepared to pay the cost of expansion without any tax payer money. The Trudeau government put in so many roadblocks, conditions etc; that made it impossible for Kinder Morgan to build the pipeline as a profitable venture. The Trudeau government bought the pipe line from Kinder Morgan and proceeded with the expansion. The original estimate for the pipeline expansion was $7.4 Billion. Another Trudeau Liberal boondoggle with the pipeline being over two years late costing close to $40 billion at the tax payers expense when it could have been done at $0 cost to the tax payers

@@theowoytowich9959 Quebec gets 14 billion in equalization. It pays about 33 billion in federal taxes.
Federal taxes are paid by individuals, not provinces, and Alberta doesn't have the population of Quebec, ontario, or BC.
Name me what these roadblocks and conditions were. Its well known that its overdue because of the court cases against it from BC. The pipeline wouldn't get finished because the company had knowingly lied on its EIA and it would take forever to satisfy a court, so the feds bought it.
The regulations brought in were to stop the unending number of court cases. The courts were no longer accepting the rubber stamps that the NEB were putting on every project.

Part of the UCP's well over $80 billion in very costly debacles and mistakes is where the UCP lost Alberta hundreds of millions of dollars by forsaking collecting property taxes from the oil companies in Alberta, and this is why municipalities in Alberta must charge increased municipal property taxes.
