plot-twist Greyson is the drummer for Sleep Token but he tries to hide it
😂😂😂😂
This is probably more true than we know
Hahahaha this might be so true, 😊😅
He could be but he isn’t
😂😂😂
Dude was beating those drums like they owed him money, god damn.
Hit the skins hard (with dynamics) and the cymbals soft makes for a good mix.
Snare drums sound better when you whack em
And the cymbals too
I suppose it is subjective but for me but for a lot of players drums don't sound good when players really wack them. They sound better with control, it can be loud but must be controlled.. The player makes a big difference, often the groove breaks up and sounds bad when really hit hard. A great player can make a drums sound fantastic from quiet to loud but not go outside their ability to keep it sounding good.
@@micb3rd
I agree, It's all in context. Sometimes it propels the song by beating the piss outta everything for a bit, But dynamics and note placement IMO are what really makes a drummer a fellow "songwriter" (Whether they get credited is a different story) and an essential element of the whole.
"If I wasn't so hard on myself, I would have had more fun." Words to live by.
yep, i felt that like an arrow to the heart cause i'm like that...
Yes, he was focusing too much on doing it 'right', instead of focusing on how he would interpret the song play it.
@@TobyIKanobyYeah, but I'd say he was pretty close
@@reshpeck yes, didn't mean to say he didn't do well, on the contrary, it was great. I just feel like if he followed his feeling more instead of trying to be correct it might have been even better.
@@TobyIKanoby I was making a bit of a joke there
That double bass is hypnotizing
Yea its a neat speed increase through it. I really like how he did it.

Greyson “Pretty Close” Nekrutman absolutely killed it.
😭😭😭
pretty close!
he needed a pretty close counter
Ahhh naaah
Thats because he is II
Whoever mixes the drums for these types of videos needs to get a raise. The kit sounds insane.
I mean, it's a channel exclusively focusing on drums, but true, this kit sounds thick and juicy as hell!
Especially in a set of headphones. I keep listening to all these videos just for the sound.
You should hear it on my monitors
The verb on the snare is chefs kiss
Thought it sounded pretty boxy, small and crap really.
The amount of passion in that drumming was insane. For someone who had no clue going into the song, then absolutely crushing it. That's raw talent right there in the purest form.
I don't know if it's the purest form, but it's pretty close
Dedication, not just talent.
@@natsu4177 Absolutely
He added kind of a punkish metal nervousness to the song which is more on the goth dark side. It gives a whole other vibe to the song. I am no drummer but a big sleep token fan and this was really impressive. They should show it to II.
I agree with you 100%! Greyson gave it a totally different undercut and it feels more urgent, but it most certainly wasn't out of place. This was a fantastic offering. I think II would be proud.
Indeed, basically made it a HIM song and I'm not mad about it 😅
These “blind” play throughs are some of the best videos on CZcams. Greyson did an awesome job!
Kinda can't tell if I like II's verse parts or Greysons more
I agree, found these videos today and I am currently binge watching lol
@@samlissemore167 Oh for sure II for me. I thought Greyson killed the verse with the high-hats at first listen but now that I have discovered the original song, II makes Greyson's drumming almost as if it's off-beat
this is the best idea so far!! really like watching these videos!!
I don't even really like music that much and I've binge watched all of these.
Whoever came up with this concept for videos is brilliant. Enjoy seeing pros play music genres they are not familiar with.
Greyson crushed it.
Let me get a Danny Carey video doing this please! Would be epic
@@veRGe02 would be fantastic. love watching Danny play Live. Human Octopus.
Big assumptions.
Who knows what he listens to? We know what he likes to play.. for us, but most drummers practice all styles.

I'm not a drummer (bassist), but this series is incredible. I love watching what these guys do to songs they are not familiar with.
That video made me discover Sleep Token. Never heard of them and now i am hooked. That guy fucking delivered, this was really amazing.
Oh, I'd love to relive those first time listens! My first time was when Will Ramos from Lorna Shore covered this very song. 😅
Welcome aboard the Sleep Token train! Brace yourself, it's a hell of a ride!!
About to do a dive into them now due to this vid as well.
@@haloedge2829Same!
Same for me now I’m a big fan of them
That kit just got absolutely sacrificed to Sleep. Grayson gave it 100. Such a weapon. Full noise and full respect.
Man, Greyson, too good. Wish he had more fun tho, man is hard on himself.
True
It's sort of encouraging to see one of the best modern drummers have zero confidence lol
Cause he's young enough to know how unnecessarily cruel people in comment sections are
And that's why I enjoy, despite some uptight shift leads at the moment, I love being a pizza delivery driver for rent money.
That’s partly why he is so good.
You can tell he was uncomfortable with this one but he crushed it. Only way we get better is by challenging ourselves.

@@titogamao Good replacement for Eloy. I had never heard of him before this watch. He's great.
It's crazy that he's 21 but has already played for 2 huge metal bands from the 1980s lol
even cooler to me is that he hated that ppl were cornering him into only being able to play jazz, so out of spite and challenge, he dove head first into metal and jesus christ is he flourishing. Grayson hits so. fkn. hard. lmao
They don’t call him Greyson “Pretty Close” Nekrutman for nothing… Great drummer!
Dude, if this guy is ever tired of playing jazz he is ALWAYS welcome to join the metal community 😂 he's got the chops, the sense of groove, and the showmanship. Unbelievable talent
Holy shit, I did not know that
He plays in a metal band😀 (Suicidal Tendencies)
Edit: More punk rock than metal but... yeah
@austintate7142 yeah I remember someone saying he plays jazz in videos because it gets more attention
his jazz style is insane. it's refreshing to see a professional like him get stumped when playing a completely different style.
I heard once that the people who can't make it to jazz joins the metal bands. Isit anywhere at all accurate When they accused metal to be easier than jazz?
Dude, his double bass patterns were absolutely bonkers... I could easily listen to this version of the song in the gym
They were crazy. I dare say even more complex kick sequences than the original (not degrading the original by any means).
@MDamage2098 speaking as an extremely average (below so really haha) amateur drummer, I feel he was doing the same thing I do and trying to almost be more complex cause you think "surely it can't be that simple." But so many songs are way 'simpler' (comparatively of course) than what it seems like even an amazing drummer such as him might think.
I actually liked his version better. This and Will Ramos vocal covers make Sleep Token better for me.
He was playing “double bass” with one foot, n’est-ce pas?
@@ElasticTurtleIt's true. As someone who's drummed basically all genres for the better part of 8 years now, I can confidently say that most songs are actually more interesting than difficult.
Of course there are difficult songs in every main genre. However, there are also some subtly difficult parts to songs that are not tough drumming songs but it's those little parts that make you go "Oh that was interesting" or "huh that's kinda tough actually." And more often than not that's in the metal genres that I've had to stop and do those parts my own way.
I don't know this tune at all, but I think making Greyson angry and off-balance really helped how he interpreted the drum part. The music calls for undisciplined edginess, which Greyson delivered in spades, although in the practice room I bet he's the most disciplined player alive. I love an emotional performance, and I certainly got one here!
I'd never heard of Greyson before, but im a huge fan now! Great attitude, super talented and handled the challenge like a pro! So badass :)
The way Greyson's face lights up every time he says "Thats pretty close!". You can tell he cares a lot about getting things right
I think you guys don’t realize the amount of talent in that man. This is disgustingly impressive

I have probably watched this clip from 4:08 to 9:36 at least 2,000 times. Literally have become obsessed.
Call me crazy, literally bought a drum kit, and a double pedal just to dedicate the next few years to trying to learn YOUR rendition of this song.
Thank you Greyson, you made me buy a Mapex 5p kit with a 22" bass and a freaking iron cobra pedal that cost nearly as much as the kit itself lmao....I hope I can come back to this comment a year or two from now and say "I did it"
LMFAO trust me kid, save your dads money because you won't.
Kit showed up today, putting it together after work...Cant wait!!!
Hearing it without the drums really shows you how important ii is to the bands sound and groove
Yeah like vessel does a fantastic job writing the guitar, bass and vocals but it wouldn't work at all without II writing all the drums for every song, I wouldn't be surprised if he helped with the guitar and bass too
(And before anyone yells at me, III and IV are touring members, only vessel and II are credited for songs)
Well drums is the heart of all songs, drums are the very thing that keeps the song intact. Sure you can memorize the guitar chords and timing without drums, but it'll always sound off without drums.
As a kid, that was something I got to learn very quickly in the group I was in.
Did anyone doubt that? I think everyone agrees that drummers are essential
@anno222 I was making a statement from how it sounds from my perspective. Go be be a dick somewhere else
@@anno222yeah, thst kinda like sayi g smth about necessary of food, lil
This was so good. It's crazy how self-conscious a talented drummer like Greyson can get just knowing that there is an existing drum track he's trying to "live up to." At any rate, he killed it.
If you watch the one with the drummer from Megadeth, he's so self-conscious and is like nervous laughing at the end apologizing if it was bad. And it was goddamn amazing. Nice to know even extremely talented people can be nervous or self-conscious about their work and just power through
@@chacehorsman2615 This is true for many people who have mastered some craft or are specialists in their field. In my experience, these very people are much more humble in their field because they know the incredibly long way they had to go before.
I find this video series really impressive, such talented people, true masters of their art.
How could you even become a master if you're not self-conscious? You kinda need that so you know how you need to improve. Being too hard on yourself is a different matter, though.
@@Felms99 yeah its some sort of dunning-kruger effect where they're so good that they realize how much more they could be doing.

I was most impressed with Chad Smith nailing it on his first take but I think I like this better. He absolutely killed it.
This is absolutely outrageous, phew. He really deeply understood the structure of the song and brought his own energy to it. I’m grinning
WILD how Greyson does so much hi hat work in the verse having not heard the song, given that II is constantly using the hats in the verses. Insane

But I amazed by his effort. He’s so talented. And yeah..that was pretty close hah. Thanks for the great content!
It was actually super close, the only thing that was really different was he did it in double time
Why is that?
By the songs I've just heard, it's SUPER, but really super BASIC drums. Especially for a guy who comes from a jazz background like Greyson.
The dudes so humble too
@@trfmusic902actually, the original is played with a half-time feel … Grayson is playing regular time
@@dougmorato the drums are harder to play than they sound usually. It's pretty straightforward but super intricate
That kick pattern starting at ~7:49 is just lovely.
Dude hits HARD, man... wow!
Very intuitive!
Excellent takes!
This was so much fun to watch. I would love to see more of this!!!! That was fantastic.
He killed the double bass pedals... I didn't know who this Greyson guy was going into the video, but I'm officially a fan now.
