Johan Cruyff vs Las Palmas | Cruyff plays as a Libero in his last game for Barcelona

  • Barcelona beat Las Palmas 3:1 in the final of 1978 Copa Del Rey with Johan Cruyff playing his last game for blaugrana. Surprisingly, the great Dutchman started out deep in midfield and after Barcelona secured the winning score, dropped even deeper - to a role of a libero or a sweeper, the deepest defender.

Thank you very much for the content you upload. For me, Cruyff is the most complete player in history. And the most influential person in this game, he was not only one of the best players, he was also one of the best coaches.

I would also drop Don Alfredo Di Stéfano in there along with Cruyff. As the two most complete multi positional players, that took up mutiple roles during a game.
Cruyff took a lot of his game from Di Stéfano also.

@@johnpacino007 Completely agree with you. Johan Cruyff always said that his idol in youth was Alfredo Di Stefano. Di Stefano attacked and defended in various positions, but Cruyff went further, as he was capable of playing in any defensive position.

Cruyff's several seasons have been cruelly underrated
    68,70 and 78
Because he did not participate in the national level in those years
70, he was probably the best player in the club category
78, 2 games against Las Palmas and Aston Villa are enough to understand his ability
Of course, Cruyff's seasons after 74 are totally underrated

Neeskens is who played as a libero, Cruyff played, as usual, everywhere

@Harms i watched the full game a month ago.
Cruyff's playmaking was off the chain, all over the pitch...
He even played libero a lot during the match, like Beckenbauer.
Still to my mind; the greatest European player I've ever seen!
Best, Beckenbauer, Platini, Laudrup, Zidane, Cristiano, run him the closet, from the European brigade...

I was intrigued when I saw the mention of this game in some discussion when people said that he played as a defender. And he really did! Not his best game, but I still found it illuminating.

@@HarmsFootball Great compilation of the awesome Cruyff who indeed espoused total football with his ability to play in any position on the field. During his time at Barca, he dropped deeper often playing in midfield or defence.

By this time it was clear to see that Cruyff was costing off reputation. Just like Eusebio before him (Post-injury in 1969), he was always great at telling others what to do on the pitch but was never in the business of pulling up his own weight on the pitch, especially after they had made it to the upper echelons of the footballing hierarchy. Not to denigrate his footballing ability, but save for his first season at Barca and his swashbuckling run with Dutch in 1974, he looked very ordinary and passive in games. A far cry from his mesmerising brilliance of 1968-1973.

Watch His game against England NT in Wembley 1977. I do agree with your opinion slightly, but Speed aint everything. Surprisingly Cruyff himself said 1978 was the very year he was at his peak.
