  • In this video I demonstrate how to make sanding mandrels so you can have one dedicated to every grit you use, no more changing the velcro stick on discs every time you need to change grits, make quickly for free, plus a hook and loop stick on disc.

    Greetings from the UK. Thanks Brian for another 'great idea'. I love the way you take your time to do things, and to do things well. Most people seem to be in such a rush today.

      Thanks for the comment. I try to fill in all the information which can make a long video. I try to just include the instruction rather than demoing me doing things. people should already know how to use a drill or just put in screws etc.

    Nice demonstration of constructing one of these. While watching the vid it occurred to me that I could use a hole saw with a 1/4" pilot bit for the first step. Some stores carry the bits in assorted lengths (a little more expensive than the Harbor Freight kit) so you can custom tailor them for different uses.

    Thanks for illustrating. I have the roloc type discs and they frequently unscrew from the holder.

    Careful with loose cuffs there Brian, roll them up clear. That Sander you made might bite you one of these days. I like your videos and instruction you share. Take care. Thanks.

    great idea. I make them also using old driver bits but I use them in an inertia sander that I made out of right angle drill adapter from Amazon. The "chuck" is magnetic and they will chuck right in. I do not use long stems as they are unnecessary on an inertia sander as you can reach right in on any bowl. This has reduced my sanding time in half. with a little modifying cutting of the right angle drill adapter and make a handle for it your in business.
    Still use my sander,
    Cheers, Lee

      Thanks for the reply and comment. That right angle drill adapter is an interesting idea. will look into it... Making up another video on another way to make the sanding mandrels not using any wood in the next few days. Just have to edit the footage.. Also following that a video to make inertia sanders. Several ideas on them. Also tested out a way to not have to use the Velcro sanding discs, works 100 percent in trial.

      I see a number of the right angle attachments, one at 105 degrees, I think would work better than a 90. Could you send me a picture of yours and any pertinent information that you did. bpbushmaster@gmail.com Thanks

    Hi great idea but here’s another , . I have been making these for years and use them for wood and stone in lapidary work. The base I use is old car engine valves and small four stroke motors,easily available usually free from mechanics and motor rebuilders, Many sizes are available and you can cut the length of the stem to suit, happy sanding. Brian, give me a way to send a picture of my inertia sander and I will do so. Also, I bought two and one unused and will include that. It is not a ninety but just shy. The angle is great.

    I'm not against spending money if it works, but my cup is full of mandrels that work 6 or 8 times and then paper will not stay on.

      I saw that when I was making he video, The cat can sleep in the shop where it is warmer inside, living here in the north. I put her food on the planer table so the dog does not get it, she is crazy about cat food. Always nosing about try to find a crumb.

    I got all the tools like lathe etc etc and then he hits me with. Order industrial velcro. Dang it. Box stores don't carry the right size. So you have to order it. Amazon carries it as well.

    • @brianprocter6191
      @brianprocter6191  Před 7 měsíci

      Yes I ordered it, from Stockroom supply in Toronto Canada, Super good stuff they use for thickness sanders. I often use double stick carpet tape with just regular sandpaper. works well, Sanding belt material works great. I just get of box of scrap. There is a video of that method as well.

    Do you think a hot glue gun would work?

    • @brianprocter6191
      @brianprocter6191  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Sorry for the late reply, on vacation and have some time, It certainly would be worth a try, I plan to try it my self, Would need to let it sit for some time to completely cure, Most hot glue is for crafts, there is an industrial ones that would be better, a friend that did cabinet work had some. Hot glue softens with heat,, sanding produces heat so would have to be carful.
