  • Todays video is finally tackling the good ole melt mod. I know there are plenty of resources out there on this but I wanted to make a video and get it out to you guys. I went a little overboard with the press tool but all in all I think it worked out well. Let me know what you use when you do this job. Thanks for watching!

    I did the melt mod and was running 16x8 wheels with 285/75/16 tires. Upgraded to 305/70/16 Nitto Terra Grapplers on same wheels. No lift at all and only melt mod. I have a very slight rub on the inner frame when turning to the left only. The right front tire wheel barely contact the frame if I turn it hard left. No contact when turning right. Love the beefier tires on my X. 285's are not a problem at all.

    A hairdryer and the head of a hammer worked great for me. Had one side that popped out after a couple of days so I'll need to touch that up. No other rubbing anywhere with 285/75.

    I cut out the section instead of melting it! Can confirm 285/75r16 fit with no lift, no rubbing with this section removed. I did drive it home from the tire shop before doing this mod - the rubbing was a minor annoyance for a short trip.

    In December 2020. I bought 4 285/75R16's Thunderer Mudders, I had already done a 3" lift on it, but it was getting harder to break, but they were great in the Sand & Snow, So in March 2021 I replaced them again with 4 Bridge stone duler factory size.

    Good job on the vid! I bought an 06 Pathfinder a couple years ago and have been thumbs upping your vids ever since. With winter coming I'll be taking off my 20" wheels and putting the stocks back on and the time has come for new rubber on them, so I was looking up the meltmod as I wanna go as big as I can on the stockees, so this vid was right on time! Ry, Great video. It's always better seeing the process in video than from the forum photo stills. I run BFGKO2's, 285/75/16 on my 08 X, OR. The melt mod has done me well for several years running Mickey Thompson MTZ 285's and a borrowed set of tall skinny BFG MT, 255's. Just a note, the BFGKO2's on stock wheels have squarer shoulders and rub slightly (enough to polish the frame rails) on the frame at full lock but not too bad.

    Thanks for demonstrating what melt mod is. Been looking into getting an over landing rig; not to worried about rock crawling but would like to be able to go on most trails.
    Question: I read that the stock Xterra has ground clearance of 9.5 inches so maybe 2.5 inch lift and 33 tires would work. Or just go to 285/75/16 for a bit of off reading?

    • @edgarinv
      @edgarinv Před 2 lety +1

      Is not enough, you will need to cut metal. Out from the bottom of the fender about an inch and also If you take the fender liner off you will see that you have a 3 sheet metal joint (glued) you will need to remove about half inch maybe 3/4" of those 3 sheetmetal corners. After that you can have your liner on again and melt to shape to screw on again.

      Everyone seems to have different answers. Most people I hear from say that what I show is enough. However different tires are shaped differently. SO if your tire has a wide shoulder you might rub even after melting this section or you might not if you get a tire with a sloping shoulder.
