    The sensation of feeling like you’re driving up a slope when you’re not is often referred to as a false perception or illusory motion. This can sometimes happen due to the road’s texture, lighting conditions, or even psychological factors.

    Regarding Andrew's comments about accessories/modifications for the Grenadier. He must not have searched the internet or only searches Australia because there are an amazing number aftermarket suppliers in the U.S. I know there are few in the UK and Europe. There's one Chinese company that seems to put out new products almost daily.
    When I got a Discovery back in 1994 it took years before there was anything.

    In March of 1992 I rented a vehicle in J’burg and drove to Kruger. On the way I drove through a huge electrical storm that to this day I believe was the biggest storm I have ever been caught in anywhere in the world. At one point the rain was coming down so hard a number of people, me included, pulled off under an overpass to wait it out. It was simply too dangerous to carry on driving. The intensity of the pounding rain was amazing and the lightning spectacular.

I own a VDJ dual cab 79. The car I owned before that was a 1HZ 76 Land Cruiser. I live in the highlands of Papua New Guinea and the difference when climbing is night and day. Can’t imagine going back to the 1HZ.

    why oh why, why mocking a Grenadier again? Just forget about it... and btw many of modified Grenadiers around, even with roof conversion (which you said will be impossible) etc. Every modified vehicle is different, dont think about stock ones. And on the other hand, many people would say that all those Troopies looks quite similar. Wheel carier, bullbar, maxrtax table, en suite shower, all the same... pls stop mocking others and enjoy what you have.
    I am your long time fan, love your older work, but last months (nearly a year) there is something missing, less passion and no "spark", but more complainig, more vissible and unnatural product placement, etc.... We want good old Andrew back, enjoying, and spreading knowledge and good vibes from travelling and exploring.

      I did not say it would be impossible to convert the roof at all. I said it would not be as simple as the Troopy. And this is a fact. People do tend to put words in my mouth and come to conclusions that are the opposite of what I said. For example, I said several times about how impressed with Grenadier, and went on and on about it too! But still, because of some criticisms, many conclude the that I do not like it. One can like something while not liking everything about it. Sorry you don't like my latest content.

      You’re one heck of a content creator, Andrew. In all the friendly tone of voice my text can share, sometimes your replies to comments come through as a little arrogant. I know you’re not an arrogant person, but sometime, in text, you could appear to be.
      I am well aware that text doesn’t have tone of voice, which means that choice of words to be very important.
      The Grenadier is no longer a car I’d buy as the options look far more interesting. My current vehicle is the most interesting of them all in my opinion. Another is the Mini Landcruiser coming in Nov. I won’t buy it, but I will have a good look at it, for sure.
      Please keep up the good work you do, from every video I learn something.

      @@4xoverlandGrenadier is certainly appealing, albeit with some flaws - for example look at the oil filter location, but the uncertainty of BMW plastics is the main deal breaker for me in not surrendering my 12 year old basic G Wagen for one and your refurbished albeit slow South African Landcruiser might be one of the last vehicles running in a post apocalyptic landscape. After only previously seeing birds eye views of two Grenadiers in Yorkshire while propelling a Unimog camper, I finally got to look closely at one 3 weeks ago in Egilsstadir airport carpark, where its suspension lift and oversized tyres looked well suited to Icelandic rivers. I was then nearly mown down by one a few nights ago in Jakarta and was glad it lacked a bullbar!

    Kalahari has been our beach house since our first visit to Mabua in 79 with our two door range rover. The Tsabong road north had two policemen patrolling on camelback! That Makopong road we also took to exit Mabua once and it was so tuff then ! I agree with the grass net bad design. Shorten the stretchies to suit….
    Pity you mention bad driving and corruption so many times. We are all reeling here is SA because of the lawlessness and employment situation.
    You will notice at Mabua gate that our pics are still adourning the walls we took before the link to Nossob was established to Nossob to form the Kgalagadi Tramsfrontier Park.

      I was joining a highway from Pretoria yesterday and from stand still a single cab 79 series kept up with me all the way to 120. Don’t know what they did to it but damn it was flying. Yes it was empty but wow I was impressed and the exhaust note, oh my, I felt it in my rib cage. I’ve watched many of your videos of how much extra power can be squeezed out of those 4.5l V8, but yesterday was pure demonstration.

    It would seem, base on what Andrew was saying about the level of crime rate in Africa, you have to be more wary of other people in towns, than predatory animals, in the bush. The bush is safer for humans.

      As a South African, totally agree. I once had a 15 strong pride of lions 5 car lengths away from my turned back while closing a camp gate but till this day I’ll rather go through that again than driving around South Africa. It’s rough out here man. No joke. I mostly carry extra fuel not coz I need it but because I’m actually trying to avoid as many refuelling towns as possible.

    Have you considered a turbo?

    • @4xoverland
      @4xoverland  Před měsícem

      I've turbo-charged two of the 5 1HZ engines I've owned and I know a lot about it. These engines tend to die very quickly after a turbo is fitted. The piston crowns are too thin to cope with the pressures. So a new-ish engine turbo-charged with care, is viable. An old engine is not.

    Done correctly by a reputable company there is nothing wrong with fitting a turbo to a 500k 1HZ with no blow by. Berrima Diesel in Australia do it successfully on a daily basis.

      @@TheBTG88I think you miss what he means when he says customise or personalise. Work done by “Ineos Arcane Works” is just another spec you can tick off to be honest. Meaning same same same to customers that pick it. Meaning you can’t just sit at camp and look at your car and feel this is “yours” and caters to you and you only. Real customisation is something you think of, plan and execute in your way based your individual needs. A company customising on your behalf, it’s not for me and definitely not for the kinda guy like Andrew. The biggest joy is seeing YOUR plan come to life.

      @@SoftCampingSouthAfrica Aside perhaps from bullbars not yet being available in the aftermarket, one could vinyl wrap the Ineos, put on different tires and wheels, add addition lighting accessories, etc. and make it look different today. So the statement on its own is rather specious.

    • @SoftCampingSouthAfrica
      @SoftCampingSouthAfrica Před 2 měsíci

      @@TheBTG88 the point is NOT to just do something just for the sake of being different. Read my reply carefully. What makes it different is individual approach based on individual requirements. The ability to adjust and rearrange things to suit personal requirements. It’s not just to say I have a special bumper therefore I’m different or slap vinyl on and boom. Personally I don’t even talk to such people ever coz I don’t wanna hear about a product catalogue from some supplier that serves little purpose to the owner other than “I want a cool product”. No one cares about that difference, Ofcoz unless you surround yourself with people that care about such. It’s the result of individualism that makes a car difference. that’s when the interests comes in. I love talking to people about their setup when I can read from their setup their personal taste and requirements and how they overcame it. Flexing a special bumper or vinyl means nothing to people we are referring to.
      For example, Andrew usually prefers (what I would call a carcass) to start off of. Granted that’s his business and prefers it that way. I’m an architect specialising in healthcare design and I run my own company. I hardly get time to overland more than 3 weeks at a time and I spend most of my time on tarmac and site meetings at almost 28000km a month. CZcams is a hobby for me and yes I understand its business for others.
      For me I need the most comfortable mile muncher I can find for the price I’m willing to pay. To allow single life (like now) to couple to 2 kids later. Basically all stages of my life. That matters to me and That’s MY starting baseline and is none negotiable. but I’m a farm boy through and through so I have to make a compromise. And it’s the response to that “Individual compromise” that makes it different.
      As a result, you have no idea how many people just rock up at my campsite just to have a look saying they haven’t seen my set up before. You know why? cos they have never met “ME”. That’s what makes your setup “unique”.
