His style is very curious, his hands are always down, close to his waist, but the style itself shows to be very efficient, full of deception movements followed by powerful strikes.
he is opening his own school, it is almost done being built, in the Shaolin area. He will be teaching exclusively the real traditional style, no modern junk!
Great video, it's definately a side of Shaolin Kungfu that is unknown to many people. Most we see from shaolin kung fu is taolu (a set of pre choreopgrahed techniques/movements) which by no means reflects realistic fighting, what they show on this video is quite the opposite.
There was a BBC documentary about an Anglican pastor who went to Shaolin to learn out finding the spiritual path. He did not find it in Shaolin Temple as it was to materialistic, but at with this master in his small mountain temple. Here they practice nei gong and qi gong in their daily tasks like farming and cleaning. These things like stance work are core in kung fu. They seem peaceful and it shows in their kung fu.
He truly is the best....I've never seen anything like this. Perhaps you are right about ambitious etc. But I think....he may be a little arrogant only because, he is actually that good. I have never seen anybody demonstrate this level of mastery of the principles of kung fu. in fact, most kungfu fighting today looks like dancing and is completely impractical. Shi Dejian knows the movements are just forms, its the spirit that fights.
xiao hong quan means small red fist. it's misunderstood as small flooding fist. but the character hong in this context is for red. Xiao = small (shao as in shaolin means young/small like a kid or a sapling) Hong = red, quan (chaun) fist great form. a lot of stuff in it. even grappling.
Real Shaolin is rare even in China, and many people, even after "learning" it, don't know how to apply it and panic. Unlike boxing, where you throw an impromptu combination hoping to catch your opponent with some of them since parrying is assumed to be impossible for all of them. Here, you'll have to train your body to react (mind AND body). As he demonstrates, after the first punch, you throw them off balance, rendering it impossible to throw a second one anyways
@MechPhantom Well all Chinese internal martial arts have fighting applications. It depends on the person's intentions of learning the particular internal art.
@MechPhantom Sadly, the reason is because many Kung Fu practitioners nowadays only focus on performing forms but not combat applications; Many of them don't or have little knowledge on how to apply their Kung Fu forms for combat. Some even think that forms are useless for combat and would resort to kickboxing instead, when in fact, forms are meant to teach combat applications as well as strengthening the fighter, building strong foundation.
@MartialArtsCN yea damn true, not all mnoks are real nowadays actuall very few are real , but yea shi de yang are one of the REAL ones and that makes me very happy coz of him shaolin MA and culture still can be preserved
@MechPhantom, thumbs up for that..but wushu does have some applications..at least the one I am learning. I am learning Changquan. We basically do traditional and we try to add as much as we can as long as it's useful.
Actually, I spar regularly with a boxer. He is much bigger and stronger than me, and I practice with him so I can understand his punching, and how to counter him and toss him to the floor.
@MechPhantom: Well what I mean is that when he asks his student to attack, you can read that he encourages him to go faster, instead of many of these demos you'll encounter where the student puts no force into their attack at all and keeps their arm out there forever. As for Shi De Jian's speed, he might not be the fastest according to you, but he has true knowledge of the applications, which counts for quite a bit.
@MechPhantom: Totally agree with you. It's always a treat watching Shi De Jian clips since you get an idea of how these arts are really meant to be used. Notice how he actually encourages his student to try and strike him in an unplanned, genuine way? You aren't going to find that in the states.
ok, understood. But, the Chinese websites have him listed with the 师 character, as they do for the other monks. Not disagreeing, but that seems to be the way they are being listed by the video posters. Thanks, I appreciate your comment.
@VizzeOne Right... and armbar won't actually *break your arm* and strangle holds won't *kill you* if held long enough. Not to mention most if not all BJJ black belts know how to break a man's neck and wrestling throws can be fatal if the other person does not know how to break his fall. What ARE these deadly techniques? Eyes pokes, a punch to the throat? Do you think people that train is BJJ and Muay Thai do not know how to do something so simple?
I also wondered for a long time about the shrinking skill. Although this clarified it somewhat, I still have some question about it. How do i do the grab motion and then strike to the heart?
@boehmtj cool man ,its good to know that u hv learned it lol,i wanna try it too someday,its just that im quite skeptical about tai chi,but no one will know how effective is if tai chi is used in VIOLENT street fight,but yea it can be used a bit but not very efficient as other arts suh as wing chun,hugn gar,which is designed for the street.
Hey what is this video from? CCTV? is there a place I can get the whole video/documentary? I really like it so far and wish I could see the cut parts and especially the ending about chinese medicinal herbs Thanks Matt
Fantastic video that really showcases various applications of Shaolin Kung Fu plus a glimpse into the life of a monk. Hmm, why aren't the monks bald or wearing orange robes?
@salcanzonieri it's funny because de 大 means "big," hong 鸿 means "wild goose," and quan 拳 of course means "fist," but coupled as 大鸿拳 the meaning becomes almost like "great sweeping fist" or "great flowing fist," maybe as in the way a goose flies? Mandarin etymology is really interesting stuff...
@NeCacaluXuxultic Yea it has some application if u study the traditional one ,but mostly it doesnt hv it and its basically useless in a fight,. Thx for ur reply man . see ya
@MechPhantom He is both. He was on the show ''wheel of life'' He was one of five real shaolin warrior monks. He is the real deal. But mostly he just performs modern stuff, because the non martial artists people like it.
@MartialArtsCN In any art even if its wushu THERE ARE combat techniques in the forms. But these days people dont see the techniques in the form , they practice it for the sake of performing or looking cool but never understand the true meaning behind the forms thats why its not very good anymore
@VizzeOne What? The rear naked strangle/choke is one of the most common submissions in MMA! Jujitsu was the fighting art of the Samurai at one time, and Muay Thai was a boxing art used by ancient Siam, both can be used to kill and both are the core of modern mma. I do wushu and trained in sanda a little, but I don't worship the monks like they are some kind of super anime ninjas....
@Skillking22 ok thx haha lol, But 1 wuaestion,tai cahi is slow moving and not very fast , so what if ur opponent in the street is faster striker tahn the tai chi fighter? So tat makes tai chi not very effective lol
He is lineage holder of the Shaolin Wugulin gongfu. He's Master Wunanfeng's gongfu brother. Both mastering the one and only traditional internal Shaolin gongfu. Not the wushu external stuff. This man is a great respected gong fu. He actually left the Shaolin temple himself. I think he is way much better of without the Shoalin temple.
@MartialArtsCN yea hes more modern wushu guy than fighting, true he loves to perform, so yea that i think compensates his fighting skils, after all u can only be good at one, not both, coz both especially performing fancy stuff , thats needs alot of dedication to be able to do it so yea, coz of that he MAY just only train performing =)
@MechPhantom, that video was choreographed LMAO!!! Umm in boxing, a lot of punches get blocked or miss but that doesn't mean that the moves are ineffective. The Knockout punch is the slowest punch and it rarely works but it works. I've seen tornado kicks knockouts enough times to know it works.
That's somewhat of an overstatement. Yes, marketing and commercialization have taken their toll on Shaolin Kung Fu, but not to the extent that today's monks are unable to actually fight. Many of the Wusengs of Shaolin still have great knowledge of Xiao Hong Quan, Chin Na, Tang Lang Quan, Shuai Jiao and its various self defense applications.
I don't want to hear how he will defend against something in a controlled attack/defense scenario. I wanna see him spar an uncooperative opponent, and see if he can pull off those same movements. If it works the way he says, I will be impressed!
I'd have to agree with you. The current state of the Shaolin is pretty detestable. Almost complete acrobatics and marketing/bastardization of a old tradition, zero spirituality and true martial arts.
@SimKoning it doesn't matter, in real life you have to close the gap, arts come from different times and are useful in different ways, so try and grab someone who is attacking what is vital to being able to see? get palmed in the face multiple times and hit in fatal areas before you cant even grab someone? its not like they dont teach to evade people grabing you in kungfu, MMA is a real well rounded way to train, this is just more spiritual and will make you a better fighter in the long run.
Flashyness, impressiveness, has value in combat although it might not be apparant. I agree that effectiveness must be the focus, but impressing on opponents can be effective as well in certain ways. There are different ways to skin a cat... think about it.
@MechPhantom But now in these day 2011 most of them just knows the form but not the combat applications. I mean the disciples from shi yongxin today not in the past, most of them are very skilled. If you a disciples of shi de yang or shi heng jun you'll learn mostly both.
Gosh no need to get personal, mate. I was just venting my ideas. One instance could be finishing off one opponent in a quasi-flashy style. Of course you only need to show the other opponents that your skills surpass the perceived skills of themselves. If you sidestep a fight, you won that fight, one of the first things I learned in Jiu-Jitsu. No matter how. Of course you can't do that with all opponents, but to some. Running is another way. Killing your opponents yet another. Have a nice day.
@MechPhantom: Yep, that is what I meant, they usually don't have students be that agressive. That's why Shi De Jian is more legit. Peace in your life, man.
@MartialArtsCN yea most do the forms coz they want to look cool , or just learn it coz their master ask them to learn it. Thats why its not very effective and shaolin has lost alot of its essence through time. Its becoming more showy and performance type rather than fighting stil there are some who can fight like you said and i agree shideyang, heng jun etc. shi yongxin im not sure of his students coz ihv never seen them fight etc, if you have vid pls show me thx.
@MechPhantom Tai Chi conflicts with our general perception of martial arts as its movements are slower. Well, it is slow ONLY during practice to sort of create harmony with the body and generate internal force. Obviously in combat it will be done fast. It's kinda' hard for me to explain it. I think you should watch more documentaries about Tai Chi. It is strictly a martial art, not just a healthy exercise.
unfortunately few shaolin teachers around the world know Xin Yi Ba ,no one like Great Master Shi De Jian does many of them teach wushu and called it traditional Shaolin kung fu that is why i'm now studying Yi Quan wich has elements of Xin Yi Ba (tought to Master Wang Xiang Zhai by monk Heng Lin) i'll maybe turn back to Shaolin system one day
@NeCacaluXuxultic Yea so true dats why i dont really like tai chi coz of its slow speed,if its faster then its good but its too slow in a street fight so most likely it will lose.
Before this gets out of hand, he meant his online name is fuhai, not that he is a fuhai (whatever that is). You are right though, I've used my KF many times without having to punch.
@Skillking22 Yea i know i can be done fast but what is ur opponent is even faster than the tai chi's "fast " speed?, for instance wing chun, is the fastest right? so i think tai chi doesnt hv a chance lol,if ppl can strike dat fast
And all that Wudong stuff that you show in your videos, that's all a made up lineage and made up material, for money. All the martial arts historians know that none of the stuff taught as Wudong martial arts was ever really taught traditionally. Traditional Wudong martial arts exists, it is called Shongxi Neijia Quan.
@MechPhantom There's no such thing as the fastest martial art. Any style can be done fast and combat efficient. Each style has its own fighting principles, and Tai Chi relies on yielding and offbalancing the opponent using minimal force and locking opponent's movements so that the opponent would have hard time to even counter attack. Like I said, it's the fighter that counts, not the style.
@MartialArtsCN true but yea bro , thats was then , the past, where there are still real monks like u listed. But present modern day, NOW most of them just learn wushu for performance only, and also the warrior monks ust train sanda only for fighting , like you said. Thats why shaolin is losing its true culture through time. Its becoming more sport than an art, still i like it coz it rocks. ! thx for ur itme man u sure know alot , coz ur smart =)
real shaolin kung fu is not a sport, it is not looking nice, it is not commercial,....it is only eficiently...master De Jian is a true master of shaolin kung fu, anyone knows how to meet him ?..i would like to train with him
@MartialArtsCN yea true words coming from a true master( you) yea even if wang bo is so good , theres bound to be someone who is faster better and more skilled, prolyin another art or something. Yea loved the trailer man ! thx for sharing , same here cant wait for the movie . It only features yan zi bro not yan ming etc =) thx bye
@MechPhantom, obviously Shaolin wasn't fancy. Also..ther IS a guy who does use Tai Chi as a martial art which is weird becuase it isn't but he used the movements and combine it with Kung Fu...also... Kung Fu existed even before Shaolin.. Shaolin's not the oldest.
His style is very curious, his hands are always down, close to his waist, but the style itself shows to be very efficient, full of deception movements followed by powerful strikes.
yes, he has a school near Shaolin, where he teaches foreigners.
He is eager for the real Shaolin not to disappear.
I love the part where he shows the pupils how the movements came from field work or can be trained while working in the fields. Thats very good.
All you can really count on, is change!! shi De Jian is and always will be a GREAT MAN, SPIRIT, HEALER, LEADER, MONK, WHEREVER HE IS.............
he is opening his own school, it is almost done being built, in the Shaolin area.
He will be teaching exclusively the real traditional style, no modern junk!

No problem at all, I am thankful for your comment, I corrected all my video titles with him, thanks!
@MechPhantom
As for Tai Chi, there are already dozens of videos about Tai Chi applications over CZcams.
Fantastic Traditional Shaolin Martial Monk!
xiao hong quan means small red fist. it's misunderstood as small flooding fist. but the character hong in this context is for red. Xiao = small (shao as in shaolin means young/small like a kid or a sapling) Hong = red, quan (chaun) fist

@MechPhantom, well actually the tornado kick works but ONLY when ya use it in combination.
你好、まさに「行学一如」。久しぶりに、まともな少林功夫を見ました。 請加油。
@boehmtj CIntinued. Tai chi can only do certain movements while others can do more,so yea thx for pointing that out bro. See you
@RedRafiki Yes you can. The temple still openly teaches both chinese and foreigners
@MechPhantom
Tai Chi is strictly a martial art, except that practicing it also brings health benefits.
@MechPhantom Well all Chinese internal martial arts have fighting applications. It depends on the person's intentions of learning the particular internal art.
@MechPhantom, the forms actually help but not a lot so you're kinda right. th Forms actually helped me react a certain way
@MechPhantom

@MechPhantom
Yes, but then just like any other martial art styles, it will again comes down to practitioners' wisdom to apply it.
Absolute GOLD.
@FoieGras or you can just learn it for meditative reasons, thats good too.
@MechPhantom Yep.
I've heard it comes out early next year.
@MechPhantom, thumbs up for that..but wushu does have some applications..at least the one I am learning. I am learning Changquan. We basically do traditional and we try to add as much as we can as long as it's useful.
@MechPhantom Yan ming is also there.
This guy who fought yan zi at the end.
Yan Lei is also there.
You can check out the websites all three are there.
Actually, I spar regularly with a boxer. He is much bigger and stronger than me, and I practice with him so I can understand his punching, and how to counter him and toss him to the floor.

You aren't going to find that in the states.
@MechPhantom here is an example of tai chi
功夫傳奇-第五集(太極)第三節01 paste this into the search bar. Or you could search Chen Xiao Wang,
ok, understood.
But, the Chinese websites have him listed with the 师 character, as they do for the other monks.
Not disagreeing, but that seems to be the way they are being listed by the video posters.
Thanks, I appreciate your comment.

师 means expert or teacher.
The character that you show means "to explain or release"
Shi "师" is always used before a Monk's name.
@MechPhantom his name is SwordSage.
Hey what is this video from? CCTV? is there a place I can get the whole video/documentary? I really like it so far and wish I could see the cut parts and especially the ending about chinese medicinal herbs

sometimes it means "red", depending on the character used for Hong

@jorgeeltan Thats ok dude. Im not positive there may be two temples, but i think that one of them is a wudang temple, not a shaolin temple.
@toyhut2 oh, sorry is just that i thought they were more than one shaolin temples
@VizzeOne What? The rear naked strangle/choke is one of the most common submissions in MMA! @MechPhantom I know.
Only the real monks or other few masters pratice both in some styles.
Shi Deyang knows all for example.
@Skillking22 ok thx haha lol, But 1 wuaestion,tai cahi is slow moving and not very fast , so what if ur opponent in the street is faster striker tahn the tai chi fighter? So tat makes tai chi not very effective lol

This man is a great respected gong fu. He actually left the Shaolin temple himself. I think he is way much better of without the Shoalin temple.

@MechPhantom Many people don't see the hidden combat techniques behind the forms.
Thanks. What is the style shown in the video then?

good stuff
I'd have to agree with you. The current state of the Shaolin is pretty detestable. Almost complete acrobatics and marketing/bastardization of a old tradition, zero spirituality and true martial arts.

@salcanzonieri so its assume they would not have same application?
he should get an oscar for the part in 05:50
"Can u be as fast as i do? Come on!! HAAAA"
Flashyness, impressiveness, has value in combat although it might not be apparant. I agree that effectiveness must be the focus, but impressing on opponents can be effective as well in certain ways. There are different ways to skin a cat... think about it.
@MechPhantom
But now in these day 2011 most of them just knows the form but not the combat applications.
@MechPhantom I think it's not so important if they can fight.
They are peaceful people, thats why they are the best warriors for me!
Peace =)
You are right though, I've used my KF many times without having to punch.
Are they doing the northern or southern Shaolin styles?
@MartialArtsCN cool a new movie? never heard of it thx for the heads up man =) i ll try wathing the iron monk
One of the fucking few REAL SHAOLIN MONKS LEFT !! he and shi yan lei are the besT!!!!
wheres the xiao hong quan section?
Are xin yi ba and xiao hong quan two different styles?
@MechPhantom
Shaolin monks did not actually create Kung Fu styles, rather it institutionalized them.
@Skillking22 Yea i know i can be done fast but what is ur opponent is even faster than the tai chi's "fast " speed?, for instance wing chun, is the fastest right? so i think tai chi doesnt hv a chance lol,if ppl can strike dat fast
@toyhut2 which temple?
Incredible.
What means Hong Kong, then?
And what´s the translation for Shi De Jian technique?
@NeCacaluXuxultic haha ok lol thx bro,so tai chi CAN be used in a violent street fight lol?
Well, they are two different Shaolin routines, they are both Shaolin boxing, but not the same movements at all.
And all that Wudong stuff that you show in your videos, that's all a made up lineage and made up material, for money. @MartialArtsCN true but yea bro , thats was then , the past, where there are still real monks like u listed. @Skillking22 tai chi ? lol it cannot be used in a street fight right? i mean its more for health ,or can it? o.0 lol thx for ur info.
real shaolin kung fu is not a sport, it is not looking nice, it is not commercial,....it is only eficiently...master De Jian is a true master of shaolin kung fu, anyone knows how to meet him ?..i would like to train with him
