In the 1960s, the Space Race was a dangerous contest of egos, ambitions, and political gains. The USSR had beaten the US several times, starting with 1957’s surprise Sputnik, the first satellite to transcend Earth’s orbit. In 1961, the Soviet Union sent the first human into space, making Yuri Gagarin a national hero and a worldwide celebrity.
Soviet engineers conceived a plan to launch two spaceships, Soyuz 1, with cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov, followed by Soyuz 2, with two cosmonauts. they were meant to meet, dock, and exchange crew members via extra-vehicular activity, and return safely home. The Soyuz mission was meant for eventual use in lunar expeditions.
Problems plagued the Soyuz 1 engineers. For starters, the hatch was much too small to accommodate a fully suited-up cosmonaut in EVA. Teams inspecting the spaceships found 203 problems, which were purportedly detailed in a 10-page memo.
At least 50 engineers supposedly contributed evidence to the document. But no one wanted to alert Brezhnev, as bad news reflected badly on the messenger. Requesting a postponement was as good as saying that the Soviet Union was inadequate to the task.
Regardless, on April 23, 1967, Vladimir Komarov climbed into the transfer van and set out to board Soyuz 1.
Trouble started almost immediately upon liftoff. One of Soyuz 1’s solar panels failed to deploy, robbing the craft of power and obscuring navigation equipment.
The thermal control system degenerated, communication with ground control broke down, and the ship spun out of control. Back on the ground, commanders decided to halt the launch of Soyuz 2 and attempt to bring Komarov back to Earth.
For five hours, Komarov circled Earth, attempting to navigate home with broken equipment and intermittent contact with ground control. The US listening stations in Turkey picked up his distressed calls over the spotty transmissions, in which he reportedly cursed and raged.
On his 19th pass, he managed to fire retrorockets and reenter Earth’s atmosphere, though Soyuz 1’s angle was inopportune. As the craft descended, the hopelessly entangled parachutes failed to deploy.
Soyuz 1 slammed into a steppe near Orenberg on April 24, killing Komarov instantly. Nothing was left of the craft or his body but twisted metal, charred remains, and a chip of his heel.
Gagarin was profoundly marked by his friend’s death, and gave a risky interview to Pravda criticizing the mission.

What amazes me is that despite the broken equipment and without help from the ground crew he still managed to land within Russia.
I mean Russia is massive
Gotta land in bounds or it doesn’t count. 🤷♂️🤣
It's called free fall😁
@@readytosmash298 only compared to other countries taking into account the oceans , its not that massive
Trueeee
Sad, and early space travel was extremely dangerous. Love to his family.
I could only imagine the fear that went through the first cosmonauts mind while he was blasting off
It's still extremely dangerous
Sadly but a great fact is that early space travel, like anything else, had two pay the piper before growing and becoming what you were meant to be!

He was a commie. No love to his family
RIP brother. You helped us get to where we are now.
Stew in hell to the Soviet space administrators for sending him on a suicide mission.
Lol no he didn't, it was a total failure that was expected to fail. No one gained anything from soviet space missions.
It's crazy that when you know your death and you still walks towards it
Komarov and 2pac
YESSSSS!!!!
Russians who “died in space” never actually went to space. Russia has spent decades crying about fake dead cosmonauts.
He did it because if he refused, his friend was next on the mission, and he knew whoever got on that ship wasn't coming back 😔
My sincere and deepest condolences to the Komarov family for their loss.
We do not accept!!

🤣 you're not his family
Gagarin was due to take that flight,he and Komarov where best friends, Komarov pulled some strings so that he instead of Gagarin would take the suicidal mission. JOHN 13:14 THE GREATEST LOVE A MAN CAN HAVE FOR HIS FRIENDS IS TO GIVE HIS LIFE FOR THEM
I have heard this story before, the only difference between what you are saying and other accounts is that it was definitely Kamarovs mission, the Soviets had long before decided to treat Gagarin as a "National Treasure, just like the US did with John Glenn, and neither Gagarin nor Glenn has allowed to go to space again. Gagarin knew that his friend would never survive the mission so to try and save his friend Gagarin demanded to take the mission, trying to pull rank as the senior cosmonaut, actually an attempt to delay the mission and get all the shortcomings fixed, but he was denied and Kamarovs fate was sealed.
@@guyorsini1044 Glenn did fly again (long after the space race and his career in the U.S. Senate) on a space shuttle mission in 1998.
@@jimegan6848 While that is true he was not a member of the astronaut corps at that time it was a part of, what was derisively called the "Send a Congressman to space to secure more funding" program> no one could adequately explain why research into geriatrics in microgravity was even needed.

Komarov requested an open casket to get back at those who'd allow this Kafkaesque mess to go ahead. RIP Komarov!
Rest in peace, you did a thing which many people have never done and would never do
Russians who “died in space” never actually went to space. Russia has spent decades crying about fake dead cosmonauts.
Sad to think he was known to say he knew he wouldn't make it back ! Why do some humans go against there instincts? God Speed 🙏🏻🖤🙏🏻
He knew it was going to be a one way mission. They should make a movie about this.
@@KennethBostonian I agree
I dont know about most humans but with soviet russia if going against your instincts meant you wasn't gonna do as your told you was gonna die anyway.
He was compelled to continue the flight because the high ranking officials didn't want to hear about the 200 problems identified with the vostok.
Yuri Gagarin, who was close friends with kamarov, also knew it was a a death trap, and tried to relinquish him of duty to fly in his place, but kamarov wouldn't let him.
He didn't have a choice :(
You didn’t mention that Komarov went so that his younger friend Yuri Gagarin didn’t have to, since Komarov knew one of them would be forced to go and that the one who went wouldn’t survive.
That’s why Gagarin was alive to do his successful mission later - because Komorov sacrificed himself for him.
The early missions by the US and Russia were so dangerous. I can only think of the family he left behind and the legacy of the Soviet Union space program and how far it has come over the decades since this tragedy.
RIP from Ohio.
This was a major consequence of the 1966 death of Sergei Korolev, the Soviets' space chief designer. A genius above all others, he ran circles around the U.S. head, Werner Von Braun, doing more with much less in resources. The Soviets' were left with strategies posed by 2 rival scientists. This s*it show would not have happened if Korolev had lived. All 4 of the Soviets' N-1 moon rockets would go on to explode, either on the pad or only a few thousand feet from the ground. The U.S.S.R. would not see success again until they achieved long duration space station missions in the '70s.
Autopsy done on Komarov showed he had died from depressurization, prior to the capsule slamming into Earth, at 40 kilometers a second.
How to you do “autopsy” on a piece of meat?
@@observantmagic4156 with "magic" obviously.
@@observantmagic4156 but really, I believe there was some parts of the lung left uncooked and some lung tissue along with a small amount if other soft tissue that had not burned up completely in the fire/impact. That lung tissue showed little to no evidence of damage caused from inhalation of extreme temperatures or any soot. At least from what I can remember reading on it. I'll try to find the article I had read. If I can I will share a link to it, for whoever may be interested.
@@kari7403 Everything I’ve read suggested that the only identifiable remains was a bit of the heel bone.
A container 6 feet tall was smashed and compacted into a jumbled mass 2 feet tall. What fuel remained ignited on impact. The most advanced noninvasive technology available at the time was x-ray, but the fused mass of tissue extracted from the debris was impossible to necropsy.
Or so everything I have come across reports. If you have different information I’d be very interested to read it please.
@@kari7403 hypoxia would be the way to go if this is what happened because depressurization in Esther's atmosphere would cause him to pass out within seconds and he would die within a minutes before hitting the ground like payne Stewart

He took one for the team. He had no choice otherwise than to see Gagarin kicked under the bus. He cursed his sacrifice, rightly so.
Screw his country if they did that willingly to him
Bro had the most brutal death
Who would give this a thumbs down. What the hell.
There are better videos about this tragic situation. This person didn't even try to post video that was relevant. Most of it wasn't of Russian spacecraft, launch's, or news. Tragic situation that should have more effort mad.
@@jamesbibel4031 BINGO. The script has solid information, but the footage is sloppy AF, starting right with the proposed rendezvous between Soyuz 1 & 2. Shown there is the Apollo Soyuz project. It wasn't until the '70s that the Soviets achieved docking. Prior to that, EVAs were required for crew transfer, involving dangerous reliance on handrails to maneuver between the modules. From there on, this video uses no footage of Soviet spacecraft, heavy lift engines (many are from the Apollo Saturn V), launch complexes, or mission control. Not one sight of a Soviet rocket. Following all of that, the conceptual video is all from NASA's Orion project.
R.I.P Kamarov, F. Its too sad that he died like this.
He wanted a open casket funeral so they can see what they did to him
There's an anime somewhat similar to this called Irina: The vampire cosmonaut. I didn't realize it was so closely related to this story. Infact the Irina was the name of Vladimir Komarov's daughter

Uhh no he didn't die instantly he died before impact he was cooked to death.
From what I found, the autopsy report said he had died from depressurization during re-entry. But you're right in that he wasn't killed in the crash. He was already dead by then. He burned up after dying, and then he smashed into the ground.
There is a copy of transcript that recorded the last words of Vladimir Komarov. He had said that the capsule was heating up quickly. Then something with the word, 'killed' in it.
I'm pretty sure he knew he was gonna die by then. Sucks he had to face death like that. At least it was pretty quick, I'm sure. And he didn't have to go through the terror that would most likely accompany a certain death, while hurtling to the Earth's surface, with no brakes, so to speak. So he was spared a few minutes of anguish.
@@kari7403 he probably said "im gonna get killed" idk
@@JujutsuAcademia I hadn't even thought of that. You're probably right about it.
@@kari7403 it was likely that, or an accusation towards his peers for essentially sending him on a death mission.
@@jellybelly0963 That could be right. I havent been able to find any info on that part, when looking online. Wish I could.
Thank you for your service to humanity.

It's crazy how all of this has happen to astronauts
Ballllsy. But it's probably was worth it sadly. I know it sounds harsh but in his mind it must have been worth it.
If they could live now and see what big steps humans did since their era
You showed about 2 photos of the Soyuz spacecraft and the rest was footage of Artemis animations, a modern moon rocket in development,
In the soviet union you cant say no you have to obey orders if your superior whether its dangerous or not you have to go prepared to accept your fate anytime thats the system pattern

Why didn’t they both just agree to not go, then this never happens
U forget that ussr was a 1 party state, so he would be killed if he didn't agree
I don’t think you understand how the Soviet Union worked
Imagine thinking this about the communists lmao
He said he is more concerned with the Moldavite fragments of Raphaels body being treated well than his own body.
Imagine being a US soldier stationed in Turkey, with no CS GO experience, hearing idi nahui cyka blyat from space
Most people say that he was already dead before his "corpse" went to Earth like an asteroid
Which isn't true, because the rougechute was pulled out but the main parachute didn't so the reserve chute was pulled but it tangled with the rouge chute. If he died who else would pull the parachute? Jesus?
