In the 1960s, the Space Race was a dangerous contest of egos, ambitions, and political gains. The USSR had beaten the US several times, starting with 1957’s surprise Sputnik, the first satellite to transcend Earth’s orbit. In 1961, the Soviet Union sent the first human into space, making Yuri Gagarin a national hero and a worldwide celebrity.
Soviet engineers conceived a plan to launch two spaceships, Soyuz 1, with cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov, followed by Soyuz 2, with two cosmonauts. they were meant to meet, dock, and exchange crew members via extra-vehicular activity, and return safely home. The Soyuz mission was meant for eventual use in lunar expeditions.
Problems plagued the Soyuz 1 engineers. For starters, the hatch was much too small to accommodate a fully suited-up cosmonaut in EVA. Teams inspecting the spaceships found 203 problems, which were purportedly detailed in a 10-page memo.
At least 50 engineers supposedly contributed evidence to the document. But no one wanted to alert Brezhnev, as bad news reflected badly on the messenger. Requesting a postponement was as good as saying that the Soviet Union was inadequate to the task.
Regardless, on April 23, 1967, Vladimir Komarov climbed into the transfer van and set out to board Soyuz 1.
Trouble started almost immediately upon liftoff. One of Soyuz 1’s solar panels failed to deploy, robbing the craft of power and obscuring navigation equipment.
The thermal control system degenerated, communication with ground control broke down, and the ship spun out of control. Back on the ground, commanders decided to halt the launch of Soyuz 2 and attempt to bring Komarov back to Earth.
For five hours, Komarov circled Earth, attempting to navigate home with broken equipment and intermittent contact with ground control. The US listening stations in Turkey picked up his distressed calls over the spotty transmissions, in which he reportedly cursed and raged.
On his 19th pass, he managed to fire retrorockets and reenter Earth’s atmosphere, though Soyuz 1’s angle was inopportune. As the craft descended, the hopelessly entangled parachutes failed to deploy.
Soyuz 1 slammed into a steppe near Orenberg on April 24, killing Komarov instantly. Nothing was left of the craft or his body but twisted metal, charred remains, and a chip of his heel.
Gagarin was profoundly marked by his friend’s death, and gave a risky interview to Pravda criticizing the mission.

Gagarin knew that his friend would never survive the mission so to try and save his friend Gagarin demanded to take the mission, trying to pull rank as the senior cosmonaut, actually an attempt to delay the mission and get all the shortcomings fixed, but he was denied and Kamarovs fate was sealed.

This was a major consequence of the 1966 death of Sergei Korolev, the Soviets' space chief designer. A genius above all others, he ran circles around the U.S. head, Werner Von Braun, doing more with much less in resources. The Soviets' were left with strategies posed by 2 rival scientists. This s*it show would not have happened if Korolev had lived. All 4 of the Soviets' N-1 moon rockets would go on to explode, either on the pad or only a few thousand feet from the ground. The U.S.S.R. would not see success again until they achieved long duration space station missions in the '70s.

It wasn't until the '70s that the Soviets achieved docking. Prior to that, EVAs were required for crew transfer, involving dangerous reliance on handrails to maneuver between the modules. From there on, this video uses no footage of Soviet spacecraft, heavy lift engines (many are from the Apollo Saturn V), launch complexes, or mission control. Not one sight of a Soviet rocket. Following all of that, the conceptual video is all from NASA's Orion project.

From what I found, the autopsy report said he had died from depressurization during re-entry. But you're right in that he wasn't killed in the crash. He was already dead by then. He burned up after dying, and then he smashed into the ground.
There is a copy of transcript that recorded the last words of Vladimir Komarov. He had said that the capsule was heating up quickly. Then something with the word, 'killed' in it.
I'm pretty sure he knew he was gonna die by then. Sucks he had to face death like that. At least it was pretty quick, I'm sure. And he didn't have to go through the terror that would most likely accompany a certain death, while hurtling to the Earth's surface, with no brakes, so to speak. So he was spared a few minutes of anguish.

This video is missing a lot of information he asked for an open casket because he knew that they were severe problems, and he also knew if he didn’t go, his best friend would go in his place and die so he made the decision to go, knowing he was going to die and angry He did ask for an open casket, so that his murderers could see what they have done to him.
