After I drove it once I can agree with Brian’s impressions, except maybe the target demo as I feel it is perfect for the young urban professional, though I only drove the NA engine (my daughter doesn’t seem to miss the turbo at all)

6:08 the whole point is it is a real automatic transmission not a terrible CVT. Their automatic transmission is bulletproof so why would they change it?

Brian, you're doing a great job.I'm mixed on this as a next car candidate. Mazda's have great road manners and upscale nicely crafted interiors. I like the power and the size but I wish the greenhouse was a little taller and the powertrain options included a hybrid with about the same power as the non turbo.
I'm loving this new side of AoA. Brian is absolutely in his prime. I love how he kindly puts automakers on the spot.
As far as the quick reviews, I think it's laid out well. I really wouldn't change much.

Brian does a better job reviewing than a lot of the CZcams veterans. He’s got smooth delivery and no filler or attempts at awkward humor. More people should adopt his style. He is right on about the CX30 being a somewhat peculiar offering when the 3 hatch exists. The cladding cheapens the vehicle, especially with Mazda trying to go upscale and upmarket.
I really liked the shorter reviews. They're great for watching on the treadmill at the gym. Thank you for doing a great job.
I've own this model (mid range) for nearly two years, beautiful vehicle to drive. I have the standard 2.5L, great fuel economy. I'm 5"11 and sit behind myself with no problem. I find it a more comfortable with the drivers seat not all the way back on it's track. The non-touch infotainment is great, but takes a bit of getting used too. I also like the plastic cladding on it, nice contrast to my white colour.
I love mine as well. Just feels right when you drive it, and I prefer it to my CX5.
We have different definitions of "great" My 2014 hyundai has better infotainment. Until you experience good infotainment, you don't know how truly bad mazda's is. I had a rental cadillac xt6 with wireless android auto. . .I just got in the car and everything worked seemlessly.
@@bfish9700 Infotainment does make a mediocre car great. Drive a 20 year old Porsche 911 with no infotainment, and tell me that is not great.

My wife has almost 5k on her 2022 CX-5 Turbo Premium Plus. She loves this car it is quick, smooth and comfortable. She has no problem with the Mazda Scroll Wheel and she is getting over 30 MPG on regular fuel. We tried running it with non ethanol premium and there was no improvement in MPG or perceived acceleration so back to the cheap stuff. The center armrest is very cush and feels great on your elbow and so does the driver armrest (these are super important in a vehicle) It is super quiet and accelerates effortlessly even with the 6 speed trans. I feel it is a bit quicker than my 2022 Santa Fe Calligraphy with a DCT and 280 HP. The only thing the car is missing is ventilated seats, power passenger seat and wireless android auto. It is expensive for 35k but compared to the 2022 RDX A Spec Advance we almost pulled the trigger on it is a bargain! The RDX has that shit touch pad and an overly complicated button array. It also gets 22mpg on premium and according to the forums there are problems with back windows exploding, creaking sunroofs and many other things. The CX30 has an elegant simplicity and rides like a much bigger vehicle. If you can find one I highly recommend it

@@KBJ497 If you don't need the extra space it is a fun little scooter that rides and handles great. RDX is a super nice ride but it all depends on what kind of ride your looking for. Sometimes small and nimble wins.

I really like this guy, and i actually really like the CX-30
Just got the beautiful red Turbo Premium. I will argue about the infotainment system all day long. With my arm on the armrest, and my hand placed comfortably on the rotary dial, I can easily make my way through all of the features of the system, control the radio, and change the settings, set a destination, without ever having to move my arm. A small turn, a push of the knob, a click of one of the four buttons surrounding the wheel, I can do whatever I need to do.

After a lot of research i have come to the conclusion that for the price that these go for (nearly 1/2 of a toyota) and the fact that they have a great japanese engine and non Cvt transmission… They are the best value on the market. I paid 26k for a fully loaded version and couldnt be happier. It handles the intense ice and snow of the NW like a dream. After my 03 mazda protege went 323k miles on the original motor and tranny before i donated it to my Church to gift to a family in need I have no doubt it will last for a very long time.
Wow; you got a fully loaded for 26k? I just got a 2022 Select last week for 27,250 before taxes. They would not haggle at all either. After speaking with a few dealerships in my area (St. Louis, a metro with 3 million people) I was told they could only find three Selects on the ground in the entire area, so explains Dealers position of strength.

Just got the premium turbo trim in exactly that color today! It looks fantastic with white leather. It replaced a 2019 X1…. Which @ 24k miles had already required way too much service and repairs. The CX30 is a much more contemporary vehicle than the X1, rides better, and hopefully is far more reliable. There’s only a few features it doesn’t have…. And the tech is vastly superior. Thanks for the review!

Brian is doing great. Like the format and length. I might just add a shot of the cargo area. Lots of shots of the back seat which is fine but 2 to 3 seconds for the back would be a worthwhile addition.

Great job, Brian. We own a 2020 CX-30 Preferred Package AWD and a 2021 CX-30 Premium Plus Turbo Package AWD. While the 2020 is fun, the 2021 turbo is fantastic-it drives like a sports car.

I owned a 2022 turbo. It is fast and practical. My only complaint is the gas tank is too tiny for a car in such size.
Also, I would include size comparison to others in it's class. I like the size comparison graph Alex usually puts in his videos

Please keep stressing the lack of level-2 drive assist system that's available either standard or as a package in almost any other competing model. Mazda should fix it at least in their next year model.
I love my CX 30. Got it for 23000 at the start of COVID lockdowns. Really my favorite car I've driven.

NO ONE ever mentions how SMALL the windows are. They are barely bigger than your head. Gives the Camaro a run for its money.
The body cladding hides how tall the belt line is and makes the door look smaller than it really is.
The windows are actually SMALLER than the Mazda 3. I own a Mazda 3 and sat inside the CX-30 and it was the first thing I noticed.
Look at the driving section just imagine the uncomfortable position you would need to rest your elbow on the door. You can't
I find the visibility in my moms 2013 corolla worser then my cx-30. It's not that bad lol. It is nowhere near the worst out there lol.
@@paranromallover4543 I bet you can comfortably rest your elbow with the window down on the Corolla unlike the CX-30. You should measure how tall both windows are if you're curious.

Is disappointing that Mazda continues to use only a 6 speed automatic. Another gear or two would be helpful for fuel economy, performance, and cruising noise.

I've always been a fan of Alex on Autos reviews and I thought this one was just fine, however, when I'm considering buying a car it's not unusual for me to learn more from your reviews than I do at any given dealership. At one dealership I asked about the brakes, transmission and engine and the sales person really didn't know. When I asked what her customers did ask her about her answer was they usually just wanted to know about the infotainment system. So, your reviews, whether they be long or short, are very helpful.
CX30, HRV and Cross Corrolla are all being cough cross shopped right now by one of my kids..... Timely!
I’d eliminate the corolla cross off the list. The cx30 is great but the HRV is the safest choice
All of them are safe choices but the Corolla Cross feels like a cheap car.
Well, the CX30 wins. HRV is noisy, especially engine, road and wind noise. It's engine and cvt transmission are overwhelmed by the task of pulling it along. Cx30 ride and seats are much better than HRV. Massive Additional dealer mark up on HRV. None on cx30.
If you want an overpriced boring box on wheels, pick the uninspiring HRV or Toyota CC.
I like that Mazda are shying away from touch screens. I absolutely hate cars where I have to stab around the touch screen to find the right functions. It feels like an interior designed by a UX expert rather than the marketing team, with buttons for the important things and a rotary controller that allows you to navigate the menus by feel.
Clearly you never owned a Lexus with the joystick to navigate the screens

Nice. Wonder why mazda did away with the multi link at the rear. There is some contentment, satisfaction and nice feeling just knowing it's there.
Great video but I would add more analysis. I can find a lot of the information about power and weight etc of the car already, what I can’t find is analysis of that car in relations to others in its class. The delivery by Brian was great and I thought the filming was good as well! :)
I would like to see a little more detail about direct pricing comparisons at the end of the video. As a recent 2019 Mazda three sedan owner I can say you will feel like you’re driving a premium vehicle. The only reason I would choose this over the Mazda three would be if I really needed the ride height.

Brian: when you reference the CX-5 gloss black cladding as preferable to the cx30's (which I like that you did) it would be nice to see a picture for comparison - as a rule of thumb, when making a visual suggestion/comparison, show a picture rather than to leave it to one's imagination. As someone who ordered a 2024 CX5 in platinum quartz in the turbo model, mentioning your cladding preference with that color becomes even more relevant today and is appreciated.

If you add a 1 min segment talking about ADAS, specially what are standard features and what features are optional . And small 20 to 30 sec demo while driving a car would be really nice. After all technology in a car now a days is very strong deciding factor.
It's one of the strengths of cx30 imo it got a lot of them at the lower level if not all

In a lot of ways this reminds me of the video style of this channel in 2014. I think it would be good to keep a mix of longer, more detailed videos with shorter informative videos.

This car, in the NA form, is a solid replacement for the former VW Golf, except for the rear legroom. You’re spot on about the transmission. It’s noticeably clunky if you’re used to a CVT or an automatic with more gears and embarrassingly bad on fuel. With prices of fuel as they are, I’m surprised Mazda hasn’t at least offered the manual from the 3 on this. Will this sell better than the Corolla Cross or the new HR-V? I doubt it. Will it sell enough to kill off the 3 hatch? Likely.
Hello, replying to your ask for a comment. 10 minutes and under is perfect, keep it that way. The only thing I would like added to reviews in general is reliability review. I understand new models are more open but, if the last ten years reliability was terrible then the likely hood is that future reliability is questionable.

..WOW!! .. How's come I have seen hundreds or thousands of auto reviews and this guy finally points out something that I have been complaining about for a couple of decades??? see 1:57 The A-pillars for a long time have been too layed back (too horizontal).. This seriously hurts visibility.. and thus is a major visibility/safety problem. and that goes for the A-pillar on BOTH sides (Drivers and passenger).. Auto makers need to make the A-pillars much more upright (vertical). And they also need to raise the rooflines about 3 or 4 inches.. This would increase comfort, interior room, increase headroom, increase driving enjoyment, and improve visibiility and safety.. I know this would make the vehicle slightly less fuel efficient.. But I would gladly trade bit less gas mileage for better visibility and better safety and the other benefits I mentioned earlier..

Great review! We have a good reason to get an SUV here in Miami, Florida: Rain and flooding! Hahahaha That's why here there is a decrease in sales of coupes! Besides k the small SUV are more practical! If they add the panoramic Moonroof they will make the CX 30, the perfect and fun small UUV car! Car Driver puts it at number one in its category!
I like the plastic cladding, but I think they just gave it a bit too much. For such a small crossover the fuel mileage rating is pretty bad...guessing it's the transmission holding that back. Too small for me, but a nice little car overall, I think.
That’s the exact car you have. I do not like the black rims and trim. I think it takes away from what could be , more classy looking. The turbo engine does not impress me. I had the CX 5 2021 and traded because I needed better speed while on the highway, changing lanes without the fear of being run over. Now the cargo space is tiny. I have to put the seat down for my golf clubs. Overall I’m happy but offer regret giving up the CX 5. I do love the leather on the interior. I would love a touch screen. Mazda said it’s for safety reasons well I think it’s the opposite, having the controls next to your side is a little challenging. I find myself having to look down often to see what I need. But overall, it is a swift little car and I enjoy being able to fit in smaller spaces.

Having ridden in a CX-30 many times, the backseat to me is too small and feels like I'm right up against the driver/passenger. The trunk area is also not very deep and surprisingly small. It's comfortable for 2 people at most in my opinion (with the option for more passengers sans luggage).
I’ve heard there will be a refresh next year, truth to that?
The Mazda CX30 is a brilliant stylish car with excellent build quality and a nice friendly solid driving experience we have had our CX30 Sport for over a year and it has given us a trouble free driving experience Our CX30 has all the extras you need and more with adaptive cruse control driving in town is done with your thumb on the selection control on a long trip you have all the safety features to keep you safe and it soaks up the miles with ease We don't have children and the rear of the car is a little tight but a young family with toddlers will be fine You can truly have fun in a CX30 and even relax while you drive my wife and I would recommend a CX30 to anyone in fact all the Mazda range are quality and packed with tec Bear Hull UK

I actually prefer the 6 speed transmission over 8 or 9 speed. It never hunts for the right gear when passing like the other ones do. Mazda also has great reliability. A Buick Encore will have you making trips for service.
I don't know why reviewers keep complaining about the 6 speed auto. Yes, it isn't the newest but, it is really really good. The accelerator have to be pressed down pass the initial click for full accelerations. The 6 speed auto does not gear hunt, where some with more gears continously up shift or down, which to me is annoying. CVT's had been improved but is far from being a torque converting auto.
I agree. I think many people would prefer the 6 speed over a CVT any day. CVT...yuck!
Six speed transmission = reliability
It's no more reliable than the eight and nine-speed transmissions that have been around for years. Some CVTs are worse, though.
Not a single CVT on the market that competes with the 6 spd auto in this car so you're wild for saying that. Totally different purpose and basically anyone that likes to have a little bit of fun in their car is taking the auto any day. Also would pump the cost up to have an 8 or 9 spd auto that Mazda does not have for a car that ranges from the low 20's up to the mid 30's for the top turbo spec. Would make zero sense to develop that suddenly in put it in the 3/CX-30. CX-50 and higher is a different story since the price of those is getting up into the 40's.
Mercedes GLA and Q3 both start at higher prices than the top trip of the CX-30 turbo premium plus and are slower so great that they have quicker transmissions but they're slow lol.
7:30 Can't get a Mazda 3 turbo in a manual transmission. The CX-30 is arguably better looking because the C-pillar isn't disgusting but it does have terrible cladding. Ground clearance, power lift-gate, rear climate control vents, and better headroom make the CX-30 better than the 3. They also drive almost identically even though they have significantly different ride heights.
The 2020 CX-30's (2.5 L AWD) front differential, has a major problem. The fill plug has a metal bracket that partially covers it. You cannot remove the plug as it is. Could you make a video that would show how to move the differential enough that drivers could do a fluid change? Mazda fixed the problem on the 2021 and newer CX-30's. Maybe it would be possible to swap a older bracket with a newer one? So far Mazda has blown me off for any kind of a fix. The dealerships have told me that the differential is "unserviceable". Thanks

I almost bought this color, instead I went with a black one and it looks sharp, the turbo engine is amazing, in the city i'm averaving 9.6l/100km, there's only a couple of things I don't like about it, first is the heated steering wheel, it doesn't heat up the whole steering wheel unlike my wifes honda pilot, second the steering might be too heavy in my opinion, especially after 12 hours of work. All in all my favorite car in its segment.
That’s horrible fuel consumption. My Mk7 Golf gets low 6 litres per 100 km

I've had the 2022 Premium Turbo for about 7 months. Love: the cool look and shape; the handling; the fit and finish; the quality materials; the paint job; the technology; and the acceleration. Mazda quality.
Don't love: the tiny gas tank (! - not even 11 gallons and about 240 mile range); the gas mileage (averaging 22.5/gallon overall since owning); the small tire/big wheel well- the tires just look a bit undersized; and the back storage. It is so cool and zippy, but it is not a great hauler of people or things- just tight inside.
Better than the Subaru Crosstour in my opinion, which it was obviously designed to compete with. As a small SUV, it is a great S vehicle, not so much as a U vehicle...as long as a buyer understands these limitations, it is a really awesome vehicle. Love driving it every time I get in it. I think my favorite new car, and I have had new 90's and 2000's 16V Jettas, an Acura TL, a Mazda 3, and Acura MDX.
Nice job, new guy. You should have mentioned the fact that it has a torsion beam rear suspension - assuming that it does because the 3 does. And spend a tad more time actually showing the cargo area. No roller bag tests needed, thanks.
Great format! I like the CX-30 but it's too close to the 3 and CX-5. It'd make more sense if the 3 were only a Mazdaspeed and the CX-30 we're it's tuned down adult counterpart but it's literally just taller.
the cramp backseat in all mazdas and horrendous gigantic black cladding on cx30 are absolute dealbreaker.

It for sure isn’t. Not when Toyota has a 39mph answer for it. That’s just too much of a delta.
Personally, as a previous owner, I think the non-Turbo is more than adequate. The base 2.5L is already the most powerful in the class and I would rather have the extra fuel economy. My only real complaint is that the Premium Plus trim is Turbo-only. Also, given the CX-30's small size, I would much rather have a power passenger seat and ventilated seats over a 360 camera and parking sensors. This is part of the reason I drive a 2022 CX-5 Signature now, because it has all the features I want without compromise.
The CX 30 at some point within the next year or so will replace the 3 I believe?

I think I would buy this over the competition since I consider this a subcompact SUV due to the small interior. It’s nicer to drive than basically every competitor and should be one of the most reliable. The 6 speed shouldn’t be too much of a problem with the turbo engine, but it is annoying with the naturally aspirated 2.5. I’d definitely buy a Mazda 3 or CX-5 first though.
We have this with the NA engine for our daughter. I'm a petrol head and I can say this 6-speed auto shifts brilliantly for a slushbox. It's crisp, smooth and authoritative with no perceived torque converter slack in the drivetrain. I'm constantly impressed by it's programming and decision making. It's a helluva lot more fun than the eCVT in my wife's 21 Accord Touring Hybrid. Though that car is awesome in it's own way. Take it easy and happy motoring.
@@MrSocktown I agree with you. I have 2 3rd gen Mazda 3’s, 2.0 and 2.5 both NA. My problem is that the 6 speed bogs in certain situations. Like when it upshifts and then you add some more throttle, it either downshifts and you get too much acceleration or it bogs and it doesn’t downshift. For a 6 speed, it is excellent and the best 6 speed I’ve ever driven. I just wish it had 8 speeds to help with highway gas mileage and to have more ratios. Approaching 3k RPMs at 80 mph isn’t great for efficiency (and neither is driving at 80 mph but it would help if the RPMs were lower).

I've been a Mazda fan & owner for most of the last 2 decades. I still love their approach to driving dynamics and road-feel, but it feels like they're falling behind badly in both the powertrain and infotainment areas... I understand they're a smaller company with limited R&D resources compared to the behemoths out there, but these limitations are starting to pinch their potential markets. For example: I would absolutely love a hybrid or PHEV that lets me take advantage of their punchy turbo engine when I need it, but sip fuel/electrons in stop & go traffic... Keeping my fingers crossed, but it seems like their pursuit of HCCI and Rotaries has put them behind the 8-ball. :-(
The Mazda CX-50 is built in Alabama and it is said they are working on a hybrid version, all wheel drive and a price more than the CX-30 are standard. They also have the all electric MX-30 that is more of a city car. To me the best thing about Mazdas is the steering feel and the price for the middle model with some options. They are also reliable over the last 9 years, earlier they were known for automatic transmission problems.
The front passenger seat isn't adjustable AT ALL??? Not even MANUALLY? That's crazy!
Didn’t mention: small tank; could have spoken about non-turbo model (plenty peppy); no wireless Apple CarPlay (???); but overall a good job; not all wheel drive but, could the Integra be considered a competitor ? (I think so…); also Audi Q3…
