  • This trio was also known as Gateway. They released a few records in the 70s, went on to do other things, reformed in the midnineties. Around this time John A lost his pick for good and started developing his post Wes thumb sound.

@@frednow Agreed. In a sense, despite a long and glorious career as a composer and a player, he's the unsung hero of all the great bands he played with. I will never forget seeing the 'Live in Copenhagen' concert from 1969 on National Geographic some 12-14 years ago. They took it down, it is somewhere on you tube, but edited, mixed up and in quite a mess.
Anyway, Holland great composer, great musician!

Really laid back and totally into the groove. He finds ways to accent the 1, the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 or whatever number, including anything in between those numbers, and always makes it sound right. It's as if he defines the rhythm and the meter, and can do anything to it, without ever losing track of where he is. Most of the time I don't really understand what he does, but amazingly still find it very listenable and totally enjoyable.

Edit: John Abercrombie, what a genius! Three years down the line, I feel blessed. Having discovered this giant late in my life, actually a few years efter he passed in 2017. Here with my long time favourite drummer Mr. DeJohnette and bassist Dave Holland, whom I didn't get at first. It took a long time to recognize that his playing was not at all trivial, much like that of Charlie Haden, but different of course.
Today I got lost, again, in John's masterpiece album Timeless. It happens a lot these days... lost in space and time, each time reluctant to snap out of it and accept the real world as it is.
IMHO, this album is about as good as it gets. The interplay of Abercrombie and organist Jan Hammer, is just out of this world, and then Jack DeJohnette on the drums... I love Jack, to me there is no one who can, or could, touch him. Not even Tony Williams or Elvin Jones.
I feel sorry for contemporary jazz musicians, because there's just so much great music of the past 60-70 years that I simply can't find the urge to check out the new crowd. There's the odd exception to that rule of course, but generally speaking I don't.
