DODGE DAKOTA STEERING RACK REPLACEMENT

  • In this Dodge Dakota Steering Rack Replacement video we go step by step in showing you how we removed the steering rack from the truck and reinstalled a new remanufactured steering rack back in this old pickup truck. The procedure is fairly straightforward on this 1999 Dodge Dakota and should be the same for 1997 to 2004 Dodge Dakota as well as Dodge Durango suv trucks. The power steering rack was leaking fluid badly so we needed to fix this issue. The seals were shot from this 20 year old truck and rather than rebuilding the power steering rack ourselves it is easier and more cost effective to just buy a rebuilt rack and send our core back in for the core exchange. This Dodge Dakota R/T has the 5.9L Magnum engine but the steering racks are similar in all the trucks with different size engines such as the V6 Magnum or 5.2L Magnum engine.

    You are getting it done. Don't you find it gratifying to take a vehicle and making it better?
    Look at all the things you have repaired already. It will be something you can be proud of. Keep Rocking!

    Thanks for this. Mine has a really really slow leak, so I'm not replacing it quite yet. But it is indeed in the cards for me, and your video just showed me how easy it is to do on my own (Firestone wants $400 for a reman part alone, before labor).

    So got a question was wondering why you put transmission fluid in your power steering pump I know Ford does this but mercon is different than normal automatic transmission fluid and or ATF

  • @lf-1942
    @lf-1942 Před 5 lety

    Nice job. Check your high pressure power steering hose, maybe the return as well. I have a 1999 Dakota and the high pressure hose was rubbing on a metal brace. It cut through the hose, fluid flew everywhere. Mine is a 4x4 Dakota and that was the only way to place the hose. I installed a new one with a thick rubber fuel line around the high pressure hose to protect it. You may not have this problem but it might be worth a check since your working on it.

    My truck did the same too, with the manifold leak. But mine, on both sides, the front manifold bolt broke. Produces that nervous tick that makes you think it's a lifter or something.

    Help!! Is there Any trick to the rack bushings. I'm on my third set in a month. When I torqe it down half of the extra rubber on the rack bushings folds out against the washer on the rack bolts and the other half folds in. Every time I torqe it to spec it rips the hell out of the extra rubber on the bushing. I'm confused. Can only the 1 peice rack bushings be used in a 01 RT or is there a 2 peice with a inseratable sleeve that can be used. Very little information out there about this
