  • Guillermo Del Toro is fresh off a huge night at the Oscars and the sequel to his Pacific Rim is right around the corner, so WOW does this feel like the right time for a look back at Pan's Labrynth or what?!

    • @homerinchinatown2
      @homerinchinatown2 Před 6 lety +211

      An underappreciated aspect of the movie, in my opinion. It's sad to think that she just added these fantasies to help her cope with the crappy reality that she was living in - but that idea fits so well with how a child like her would deal with such a crappy reality. The fantasy aspect is cool, but the possibility that it was just in her head gives the whole story a bigger emotional impact. To me, the movie does not resolve this question, which is cooler still...

    • @Thagomizer
      @Thagomizer Před 5 lety +61

      @@homerinchinatown2 There are a few subtle clues that the fantasy is real, like Ofelia's chalk escape, the flower at the end, and the fact that the labyrinth opens for her but not for Vidal.
      If the fantasy was not real, then that just makes the whole thing one big "Shoot the Shaggy Dog" story in which Ofelia not only accomplishes nothing, but needlessly endangers her brother as well.

    • @homerinchinatown2
      @homerinchinatown2 Před 5 lety +33

      @@Thagomizer I appreciate both points of view about real vs imagined aspects of the movie and I'm not sold on either one. I always go back to the first shot of the movie, where she is lying on the ground with blood flowing reverse back up into her nose. That shot has led me to wonder whether everything we see is the revisionist history from the girl in those dying moments, her desperate effort to create a more meaningful way to see her life - and something inspired by the fairy tales she loved. If that stuff is not true, then the reverse blood flow scene is just an out of place oddity - which would be a strange choice for the first thing to show the audience....
      One could argue that everything objectively happened and it's all real - and one could also argue those fantasy parts of the story all come from her and she might not be a reliable 'narrator'. I don't know if I'll ever be convinced that only one of those perspectives is supported by what's in the movie - and that's fine with me. I accept both possibilities....

      Sadly, i think Del Toro will never make something as good as PL. It was lighting in the bottle.
      Sure, i hope it won't be like that, but looking at his filmography, it's a reasonable assumption.

    A long time ago when Blockbuster was still around I was looking around in one and overheard a mother talking to her daughter who picked up the movie and mentioned how it looked interesting and wanted to rent it thinking it was a movie like Narnia probably due to the box art next to the actual blank renting case. I thought in my head "Isn't that movie rated R". I bet that girl is now a traumatized woman. I saw the movie many years later when I was in my 20s and it was pretty gruesome with that bottle scene and I was old at that point.

    Best Del Toro movies imo:
    - Pan's Labyrinth
    - The Shape of Water
    - The Devil's Backbone
    - Crimson Peak
    - Cronos
    - Hellboy 1 & 2
    - Pacific Rim
    - Blade 2
    I've never seen Mimic so I don't know where to rate that. Though I've heard Del Toro doesn't like it either.

      Tracy Mendiola I disagree, as “we” loved The Shape of Water (me, my wife, friends, film-watching group, the Directors Guild, the Producers Guild, the Critics Choice Award, the American Film Institute, and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences). Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

      Mimic was clearly tampered with in a big way, but I saw it 1st back in the day and enjoyed it at the time. I think if you watched it in retrospect, you would probably have issues, but if you lower your expectations you may get something out of it...

    Del toro is a master, those oscars he won, where not just a personal achievement, for me, those oscars represent all the great classic fantasy, horror and science fiction movies that never got an award, the actors like lon chaney sr and jr, bela lugosi, boris karloff, david prowse, robert englund, bolaji badejo, doug jones, andy serkis, ricou browning, ben chapman etc, and all the writers, directors and staff that made us dream, because sometimes we need those fantasy characters to remember what makes us human.

    One of the best quotes/scenes in the movie to show how much of a SOB the general was (much better in spanish)
    "You'd do better to tell us everything. But to make sure it happens, I brought along a few tools. Just things you pick up along the way. At first I won't be able to trust you, but after I use this, you'll own up to a few things. When we get to these we'll have developed a... how can I put this? A closer bond, much like brothers. You'll see. And when we get to this one, I'll believe anything you tell me."
