"The Leafs have a great team on paper. Unfortunately, hockey is played on ice." - Mike Myers
Proof just how big a leafs fan Myers is.
Yep 'fancy stats' ain't so fancy in a loss. Hockey's played on ice not in math or accounting class. It ain't working stop doing the same things and hoping for change. Interesting offseason
I like that
When did he say this?
The Leafs have a great team on paper, but Florida Man can’t read
It’s hard to blame officiating when your 50 goal scorer doesn’t score.
Except those two issues have nothing to do with one another. I don't see how the lack of production from the superstars means the officiating didn't affect the outcome. If you want to argue the referees were fair then just do that.
@@kalaupun Sometimes calls go your way. Sometimes they don't. If refs are the reason you lose a series, you didn't deserve to win it in the first place.
@@kalaupun Come on, stop evading the fact the Leafs can't live to the simple expectation of giving hope of going all the way.
Are you arguing with yourself cause Shannon didn’t mention the officiating.
@@kalaupun
Yes. The officiating had an effect on game five.
But games 1-4 The Leafs didn’t score three goals in regulation.
They would have won game two with a third goal, and they had two in game three, and just needed one more goal for a win.
Which would have lessened the non-goal call in game five.
Leading to a game six or a game seven possible outcome.
Their lack of early scoring let them down.
“And I remember there were complaints about goaltending…. When they got shut out.”
Never change, Shannon.
Who did shoot Ashley Babbitt?
For those who may have forgotten, Ashley is the dangerous sleeper cell domestic terrorist who had spent her entire life using patriotism as a front… just waiting for the day she could single handedly overthrow the government.
The most dangerous woman possibly to ever exist. Who knows what would’ve happened if she made it through that window? We’d probably all be speaking Babbitlonian, under her tyranny.
Saw some of that even with the Rangers loss to the Devils "well Igor wasn't great in games 5 and 7".....ok, but even if, they got shut out in both those games, I don't think Goalie was the issue here.
Some people like to avoid the real, issues like the plague it seems.
Lmao who shot Ashley Babbitt
@The Esquire of Sports ® I was lukewarm on getting Kane to begin with, even at the allegedly "cheap" price they paid. I am so done with taking on other teams stars after their prime. Why can't we have our own outside Goalie and like 1 Defender at a time. Rangers suck at drafting and developing.
Dubas added as GM in May 2018
2019: 3 wins
2020: 2 wins
2021: 3 wins
2022: 3 wins
2023: 5 wins
Guy delivered the Leafs 16 wins like he said he would, why y'all complaining? 😏
Holy crap! He did it!😂

Dubas will be the highest paid GM in the nhl if he leaves Toronto. He was not the issue.
That thumbnail 😂😂😂
I know right? Perfect
Feels true, they need Peter Griffin there
That thumbnail was foul ☠️☠️☠️☠️
Not only is the thumbnail perfect, it made me realize that Shannon could totally play the lead in You're a Good Man Charlie Brown. 😄
Priceless, most valuable thumbnail 2023.
I just can't over the fact that in the 5 games against Florida the Leafs never scored more than 2 goals... Their defense got a lot of crap (some of it is extremely justified) but hoping to consistently win games with only 2 goals in the modern NHL is literally asking for the impossible.
It's actually been 7 straight games of 2 goals or less
I don't comment much, but this time I have to, this really really hurts to see leafs fail like this...... this got to be the final show for the core 4, you have to change this because if you don't separate them, you have Matthews, Nylander both 1 year left and NTCs are coming, 2 years with JT and Marner, so the next GM have to be responsible and do something!
Loading cap on 4 players has never won anyone a cup and it’s just a bad recipe. In all honesty I’ve been a Leafs fan my entire life and I love them to death but hockey in the playoffs is won with brute strength and a level of effort and willingness to die for it, and you can’t skill your way there. One on one snap shots aren’t how you win in playoff hockey.
I will say this is the first year dubas has done an incredible job at the trade deadline and I think we should keep him and let him build this way some more. Keefe should prolly go though lol😅
We definitely need to retool like Calgary did, but without the same outcome 😂
it was the refs faults
For this game, series, last few years, since Kerry Fraser, or since 1967?
Please clarify, if you are being serious.
Thanks
The thumbnail for this video with Lucy holding the football for Charlie Brown is hilarious! 😆
Perfection👌
That means Leafs will never win another cup .
@@cdfmmcc It's Bettman's fault that 7 Canadian franchises can't put together one championship team in 30 years.
And imagine Peter Griffin hitting Lucy in a Cutway 😄
the players were tired they've never played this late into golf season
All jokes aside, they do have 0 experience on a playoff run and the endurance/durability required. That may be a factor. Playoff hockey takes a toll.
My wife who watches our home team, Ducks, has taken a huge interest in the playoffs this year asked me “who is the best player on the Leafs? I can’t tell“ For instance she started talking about Edmontons Bouchard, yeah I am stunned too, that she picks up on who plays the best. They were invisible. BTW-this hockey interest is entirely due to Zegras. I think she has watched the ally-scoop goal a 1000 times.
she's a keeper :D
Z is the man
What’s her thoughts on the mighty Blackhawks getting Bedard 😍
@The Esquire of Sports ® It's the Truth these Millionaire Leafs need to hear 😄
@The Esquire of Sports ® The problem is Nylander has bipolar disorder. You literally do not know which version of him will show up. The guy who refuses to go into corners and is lax on defense assingments? Or the guy who was practically playing for his Leafs career in games 4 and 5 ?
It's also really weird how scared of being checked Marner is when he literally throws himself at shots on the PK + has been a victim of armed robbery like wtf
I've always thought that Tavares was a luxury the Leafs didn't need. Also Matthew Knies probably makes Bunting expendable.
100%. I'm still laughing at how bad that Tavares signing was
It always felt like they just signed him because he's from the area (played for the Gens in the OHL, which is like an hour drive away from Toronto)
Tavares was a mistake - he is a good guy , that had some skill when he signed the contract , but it was waaaaay too much money for too long at a position that they did not need. and absolutely on Knies . name another team that wins that has an $ 11 million # 2 center and I am being generous calling him a # 2 center today. Nothing against him personally - he is great guy - he is a credit to any team but the money and his fit were never right - Babcock knew it at the time - I think it is why he and Dubas did not see eye to eye
KNIES is soft and looks like he is another guy that gets hurt every year. Dump him to Arizona before it’s too late
@@pjpredhomme7699he literally got us out of the first round 😂 something nobody’s done in a while. If anything dubas contracts with matthews and marner are equally as bad 😅
Leafs won 1 home game the entire post season.
"We can and we will" - Dubas
Wait... what?!?
I didn't even realize...
Wow. That's just bad. Especially considering the ridiculous amount of talent the Leafs have.
The Leafs are not my favorite team. I want them to win unless they are playing my favorite team.
I just want to see them win.
Laughable GM result. Zito added PM and appears to have constructed what appears to be a solid team built for success long term. we're cap constrained this year, but have some space next year. However our young talent will elevated from the AHL next year and that means we have growth and replacements coming up and thru the system. Really exciting for Florida fans.
1-5 at home. Brutal.
If I'm not mistaken, they won 1 game in regulation time all playoffs?
@@carletonrutherford1799, they won two games: game 2 against TBL and game 4 against Panthers (that result is still bad though).
Can’t wait for them to raise the “First Round Champions” banner in the rafters for the next 20 years

They have a parade planned so i'm told..
i remember seeing Toronto north division champions gear being peddled in the bubble year... participation trophy level cope.
That banner must be raised in a big ceremony at the beginning of next season with Sittler, Clark and Sundin dropping a ceremonial puck made of diamond.

Dubas is an analytics guy, so it's no surprise that he constructed a team that is great on paper. Unfortunately, analytics don't always translate to playoff performance.
The money ball of hockey.
@@SteelCityIceBirds the key to Moneyball was finding undervalued players and using them appropriately to get disproportionate bang for your buck. I don’t see much of that with this team.
Analytics don't translate to better in the NHL. It works better for MLB where they have 162 games in a season to utilize it.
@@kftc1980 it was more of a comparison to his analytics approach. Thinking that on paper he hits all the needs but in reality it doesn’t work.
Dubas has strayed away from that in favor of more and more “grit and sandpaper” each season. It hasn’t helped.
I wonder if the pressure cooker style situation in Toronto has hindered Dubas just as much of the players themselves.

@@joonatuominen7844 that’s a great observation
The thing that annoys me about the "But the analytics say" types is that they conveniently omit whenever their team wins against the analytics. The Leafs played pretty well this round but Vasilevskiy's shakiness was a huge part of how they even got to the second round and their analytics were quite underwhelming there.
yeah the bolts weren’t healthy and they still had to lose 3 ot games at home in a single playoffs which is something that will never happen again, they outplayed Toronto all of first round and then Toronto just got pounded after
The Leafs. So much talent. So little grit.

The Leafs can no longer just think a tweak will solve their problems. This team needs a big change and not just the ones wearing ties/suits but the people on the ice. The reality this team isn't built for the playoffs should have hit them in 2021 when the Habs took them out.
Toronto is in the spot Washington / San Jose were in the late 2000s/early 2010s. Build for regular season but not postseason.
I have been a Leafs fan for 58 years. I have no expectations.

Matthews never shows up in the playoffs when we need him. The guy can leave anytime now.
fun fact: The Hockey Guy and Austin Matthews have the same amount of goals scored in the 2nd round of the NHL Playoffs.🤷♂🤷♂
I became a Leafs supporter in 2004 after watching them hammer Ottawa in round one that year, and I remember a video you made where you explained how you became a Boston supporter - that realisation of Vancouver isn't going to win a Stanley Cup in your lifetime. I now feel that same way about the Leafs and now I've adopted the Colorado Avalanche as my West Con/playoff team. I'm nearly 40 and Toronto have yet to win an NHL championship in that time, Colorado (since the Nordiques relocated) have won 3.
After looking over the overall play of the Leafs since 2016, two things do stand out: The Leafs seem more interested in turning their "go to" guys Matthews, Marner, Tavares and Nylander into Hockey Hall of Famers rather than Stanley Cup winners. Second, they seem more set on breaking NHL/club regular season records than winning Stanley Cups. Also, at the beginning of this past season when they announced that they got rid of Campbell and brought in Samsonov, and Murray I was thinking "Am I gonna have to get to know these guys? Are they gonna be around long? Has the team just repeated the same mistake they made with Felix Potvin and Curtis Joseph?"
I'm not gonna be the "armchair analyst" and say I have all the answers, but I'm gonna make three observations:
1. The Leafs HAVE TO STOP trading their 1st round draft picks. That's how they got Matthews and Reilly.
2. The Leafs have to stick with a goalie for more than one year. Campbell was very good in the 21-22 season (In my opinion) and pairing him with Samsonov - who does have extensive playoff experience - could've taken on sort of a mentor like role.
3. Personally, I'd keep Dubas. Getting past the first round IS an improvement. Not much of one, but it is a step in the right direction.
The curse of Harold Ballard continues on...
So let's just start cheering for winners, not stick with our team. Honest to god, fair weather fans are the worst. You pick a team to cheer for just because they are good? Fair weather fans have no credibility whatsoever. I guarantee you, if the Leafs ever actually did win a cup, you would be cheering for them, and disregarding the other teams you cheered for, in 1 second.
The final game against Montreal was not a 4-3 score. That was the series total: 4-3 in games. The final score in Game 7 was 3-1.
I am amazed how fast Las Vegas and Seattle have put it together.

I feel like if Dubas doesn't fire Keefe, Dubas should be fired. If there's complacency or acceptance with this performance then Shanahan, Keefe and Dubas should be done. You've got nearly 50 percent of the cap into 4 players, half of which didn't show up in the 2nd round.
Good process, but Dubas is largely to blame for the overall country-club, pseudo-competitive thing they have going on. When you don't even bother with head coach interviews (a few worthy of consideration iirc), even for optics sake, you're saying you're looking for insulation before anything else. Players aren't blind to this and it's bound to reproduce.
Not to mention this being runback 2 or 3.

There is an elusive chemistry of talent, grit and hunger that is needed for a team to reach the top. As a long-time Cap fan I understand the frustration of the Leafs. All I know, that the year the Caps won...they (for once) had incredible "Puck Luck". Like Toronto to some degree...they also had immense pressure. We could never beat Pittsburgh! Ovi had pressure to "prove" his real worth as a player. Time and fortunate circumstances converged in that glorious year of 2018.
Good Luck Toronto!

Florida was a better team this series, and Toronto will have to improve if they want to be the better team next year.

Love your channel. You're a legend
The opening discussion on analytics should be noted with the following: A sport with far fewer moving pieces and a lesser range of outcomes like baseball lends itself well to analytics. When it comes to hockey analytics the public has access to very limited data, and teams almost certainly each have their own in house stats and analytics. But those are trade secrets, so what the public has is almost all determined on shots and shot attempts. It's just not on the same level as baseball in terms of the weight you can give analytics.
100% fact! Analytics does not lend itself to a dynamic sport like hockey. Analytics people have conned the NHL into thinking it really works. It is in hockey to convince hockey that it needs to be there. That's it.
THG Thumbnail is incredible 🔥🔥
I’ll have to watch this later, but the thumbnail made me look at the time stamp anyway. That’s a classic ❤❤❤
The Caps were really good for long stretches and couldn't get over the hump till they finally won in 2018. Maybe it's not the same pain, but as a fan it sure felt like it.
How easily people forget about 96 semifinal against N.J. when the buds got 6 that's SIX shots in the entire game, that was it for me. When fans want to win more than the players then something is wrong.
It also seemed weird to me that even after a win Keefe would always change the line ups. He never had a shut down line. Most teams have that 3rd line that goes up against the other teams top players and just hard on the puck, forechecks and scores. He just seemed so confused on where to put who
It took them so long to get out of the first round that when they finally did they didn't know what to do .
I am old enough to have watched the Leafs win the Cup on our B&W TV. It's been a very long time since the Leafs have had another parade in Hogtown.
If the champions don't have the best analytics, maybe the analytics are valuing the wrong things.
That's the best take I've seen so far.

Would be Ironic if Florida lost to a former Maple Leafs goalie.
Took me a bit to shake off my depression and work myself up to watch. Great analysis as always. I think it just comes down to heart. For whatever reason. Playing hockey in Toronto just saps the heart out of a hockey player. You can put it up to the media, the deep pockets of ownership, the fans, or even the extra chip on the shoulder teams have when playing the Leafs. Whatever the reason is or the combination of reasons it causes the Leaf players to not play hungry in the playoffs and it shows. Thank you empty void of the youtube comment section for allowing me to vent and get this off my chest. Have a good day.
The likes are already at 67 after 5 minutes of this video being uploaded... how fitting 🤭
This is such a multifaceted problem that it's almost mind boggling to think about. You can put blame just about anywhere and it'd be hard to discount anyone's points. The core of Matthews, Marner, Tavares and Nylander need to be better. The coach's defensive scheme is too passive and leaves his team looking dumb in their own zone often. Kyle Dubas has not solved the goaltending trouble. You could nitpick all day. I lean towards the coach needing replacement but there's more to it than just him.
Was listening to this in the background. But dont think it was mentioned but Matthews and Marner have NMC's that kick in July 1st so the leafs gotta decide pretty quick if they're keeping or shipping the the bois that ghost when it comes time for the playoffs.
Shannon really fired up in the post season. I love it.
The current Maple Leafs remind me a lot of the Ottawa Senators in the Alfredsson Era, except that that team went to the Finals, because they held onto key depth players longer. Ottawa had a lot of high skill, big name forwards who didn't like to go to the net, some decent defence but never a true #1 guy, and good enough but not great goaltending. If you want the President's Trophy, you collect as many high skill stars as possible. If you want to win in the playoffs you need to build from the crease and blueline out.

Leafs scored a maximum of 2 goals per day in this series. For an "offensive juggernaut", it should be clear as day to Dubas that good defensive teams know how to shut down the Leafs in the playoffs. Regular season, sure, have fun, score some goals. But playoffs are entirely different. Tight checking and every dirty trick in the book makes the Leafs a zero threat in the postseason.
11:59 Problem with Matthews is, that's ALL he's good for. Goals.
If he doesn't score, like in the FLA series, he's essentially a pylon out there. He has the heart of a roadkill squirrel, and the courage of a timid kitten. For $11.5M a year? Ya, 40 goals is low, when that's ALL you do.
www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/upon-further-review-how-auston-matthews-has-changed-his-style-effectiveness/ Not really.
@@TheHockeyGuy No offense, really. An article from a known Toronto Maple Leafs mouthpiece site like SportsNet, is hardly a zinger.
I think I'll trust my own eyes in what I saw in this year's playoffs, than some fluff piece by Justin Bourne. 😆
Matthews is simply not a playoff performer, and you know that, as well as anyone.
Have a good summer, bud.
That thumbnail is pure gold lololol
The thumbnail had me dying 😂
leafs played 1 good game, game 2 vs tampa, where they looked like the team everyone expected. other than that they were outwilled, outplayed....they probably shouldn't have got by tampa and likely to lose to them round 1 next year.
This is relatively unrelated, but has going "all in" and bringing in a bunch of big names ever worked? Rangers did it and were knocked out in the first round by Jersey, Boston did it and were knocked out by Florida (who didn't do anything at the deadline as I recall), and now Toronto has also fallen to Florida. Seattle didn't do anything either and they still have a chance to make it to the conference final (Hoping not as a Dallas fan but still XD).
LA is probably the last major move maker to win
Dubas signed the core 4 before the freeze on the cap. The freeze hurt the Leafs more than any other team because of it. He did as good a job as he could to work around. I hope they all get extended. Been a Leafs fan for 52 years and I've seen bad management. They are not the reason. Give them a chance when the cap goes up.
Conglaturations!
Hockey Guy = Best Analysis
Obviously I enjoy when the leafs defeat the Habs & Sens BUT I'm happy if a Canadian team(city) wins a Cup so good luck to the Oilers👍
Great choice with the thumbnail!
Totally agree on the analytics comment. Now I LOVE analytics, they are so fun to look at, but like every other stat all they do is tell another side of the story.
I’m not a fan of either team but I’d like to see Austin matthews on the coyotes. One of the top 4 on the leafs gotta go, and he seems like the east answer
I believe Auston will be heading home to Ariz.
Let's be honest here. Even THG likes to take a shot at the Leafs when it applies. The thumbnail is proof of that 😂😂
Also, I agree with THG about analytics. As someone who deals with numbers on a daily basis, it only tells a part of the story. People need to stop saying or thinking that it tells the whole story
Leafs went all in on this season by bringing in the rental top-end players, they won two more games than they did last season, and they got crushed by the team they wanted to play against in the Panthers...
In my opinion from and outside looking in perspective, I think the Leafs did what they could do under their control to bring in the roster they did. Ultimately it is up to the players, as a whole unit, to perform and produce. Florida's defense and Bobrovsky playing like he did a few years ago before he signed that insane contract really has spurred them on. They had a great gameplan to stifle Toronto's offense and their was always someone in Matthews' face any time he touched the puck. The Leafs didn't have an answer to Florida's gameplan and it showed. I do think they need to move on from atleast one of those core players' contracts otherwise they'll never be able to add any significant depth to the roster in the next few years because their high draft picks are all gone
THG is wrong for that thumbnail lmao
