Bokeh looks terrible
I like the look, especially 100mm looks so dreamy (4:53), beautiful.
I second here. Horrible bokeh, flares are very very bad. This is probably one of the worst anamorphic adapter on the market.
2:12 I think the shots of focus breathing actually work really well. I find the zoom effect pleasing and appropriate in the way it emphasizes the shift of attention.
Some looks quite epic.

Sick Brandon! Amazing shots as always and solid review 🙌 I've been enjoying the Cine-AF lenses and the adapter has been interesting. The lack of threading is a bummer. I need to pick up a matte box for it with some mist and ND filters.

The interchangeability with the v-af spherical lenses is what is most appealing to me. Using the same kit for anamorphic/spherical

Lovely to-the-point review as always, Brandon. Thank you. Yes, not being autofocus breaks the USP of the series. Looks like a version launched out of senior management pressure! Hope they are now peacefully working on the autofocus version. Btw, that soft focus will make my audience think i screwed up my shot.. It doesn't look like a deliberate effect at all.
Additionally, my RS 4 focus motor was unable to drive the focus ring of the adapter. So a more powerful follow focus would be needed.

Great review. I however find that in the sample footage the squeeze seems off? Like it’s squeezed too much? It looks somewhat unnatural..
Indeed, i feel the same. Looks like the desqueeze factor is off. 1,6 or 1.5 instead of 1.7 😮
How did you setup the IBIS? Did you need to adjust the focal length accordingly?

I think they avoided the filter thread because it'd cause vignetting? Can't think of any other reason but would be good to ask them.
Agree about the weird rounded rectangle bokeh... But benefits seem to outweigh the cons.

Fantastic review. Great footage, very clear statement of pros and cons, and who the lens is best suited for. I'll add "price / performance" to the benefit list, compared to full set of anamorphic lenses (much cheaper!) or with other anamorphic adapters (much better visual quality). Something you didn't cover and I haven't heard mention: Does manual focus adjust BOTH the anamorphic adapter and the base lens, to get best performance across the whole focusing range? Or to minimize focus breathing? I would guess "yes", but I'd like to know more. Lastly: I really want to thank you for that last suggestion for using both anamorphic and spherical footage (appropriately cropped). That is probably my use case when I step up to this level of gear.
I'll add that I probably won't buy the adapter due to the "capsule pill" bokha. I also don't have a compelling need given current and near future projects. But I'm looking forward to future versions and improvements.
I don’t know the technical answer, but there is noticeable breathing (which I consider desirable in anamorphics). Focus is controlled by a single ring on the adapter. On longer focal lengths, I did notice considerably less sharpness at minimum focus with wide aperture.
What other possible gear they can make to connect to the lens?
Appreciate the honest review. I'm disappointed that Samyang wasn't able to make this autofocus. AF would have made them stand out from the rest of the budget anamorphics out there. While this may be great for those who have the set of Samyang Cine AF lenses, it doesn't stand out enough for the price tag. Sirui and Blazar seem to understand the pulse of the consumers while Samyang continues to make head-scratching products. I root for them and want them to succeed since more competition in the space is better for us all, but they're just wasting their resources on products like this.
Thanks for your perspective. As someone who owns nearly the whole V-AF set, this adapter makes great sense for me. Shooting in anamorphic will always be a sideline, in all likelihood. As for "why only manual focus anamorphic adapter", I have two guesses, and then a tentative prediction. First, autofocus depends on interaction between camera lens and camera body, and there maybe some fundamental restrictions on auto focus algorithms in camera that don't work well in anamorphic. Might result in too much "hunting" or other undesirable artifacts. Second, there's the issue of cost and weight. They would need to put autofocus motors in the adapter, which definitely adds cost and maybe some weight. A heavier and more costly adapter might have less broad appeal. Last, my prediction is that Samyang will come out with an autofocus version of this adapter in a year or so, but it might cost $400 more (%40). I have no inside information other than a general idea how long it takes to engineer complex products in a new product line.

I don't think anamorphic lenses will have AF by how it works.
Anamorphic lens compresses the very wide image to the same square sensor, the AI on camera will be hard to find focus hence compressed image.

Regarding ND’s, have you considered clip-in filters? They are set at a certain strength though, but maybe a ND32 is flexible enough for most daylight situations?
I really need variable NDs for the way I shoot. If I need to shuffle static ND filters all day I will be too slow.

Hi Brandon you could use the Tilta Lightweight Filter Clamp-On Adapter (95 mm) in combination with Tilta mirage VND to solve mounting problems with Samyang Anamorphic adapter. Although the VND is not perfect (colour shift and vignetting wide lenses) Tahnx for shairing your thoughts with us! Cheers Mitchell

Damn, the bokeh is exactly what I want, the horizontal and vertical cutoffs at the edges it's just the size of 2 lenses together is too big
Hi Brandon new subscriber thanks for this videos! Are you using your phone as a monitor to live view the anamorphic? What app/phone do you use for this? I want to have a lightweight setup with this anamorphic adapter and don’t want to buy an external monitor if I could use my phone to live view the image. Thanks in advance 🙏🏻

Awesome review (big fan here!). But besides the lack of flare and center sharpness... I don't see much of a difference compare to a cheap $30 Ultra Wide adapter that screws on the front of the lens. Let me explain, on my EOS-M with Magic Lantern I can shoot natively at 2.35:1 aspect ratio, the UWL adapter mounted on top of my Sigma 16mm F1.4 or the 22mm F2, and I get similar bokeh, blurred edges with center sharpness all the while getting different cinematic aspect ratios (2.35:1, 2.39:1, 2:1, 2.20:1, etc.) I recently uploaded a video reviewing the UWL adapter.
So after seeing your results, I'm so happy with my Ghetto Anamor-fake look with my EOS-M. 😅
@9:35 about the balancing issue: Have you tried placing a mic or an external monitor to add weight in the rear and help with balance?
Anamorphic changes not just wide angle distortion but also bokeh shape and character, image compression, rendition of human faces, and of course lens flares. It’s complicated. Regarding balance, adding top-mounted accessories would make my setup taller, causing problems with inverted mode.

I suppose this is part of the cost vs performance trade off of anamorphic adapters vs. native anamorphic lenses. I believe that the cinematographer / DP can make choices for lens focal length, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, distance-to-subject to manage or minimize the "background busyness". I haven't done full price comparison, but isn't the full V-AF set (minus 20mm) + anamorphic adapter much less costly than a comparable (T1.9, 1.7:1 squeeze) native anamorphic set? Isn't the latter 3X to 10X more expensive?
By any chance could you please put anamorphic adapter onto 20mm version and see what happens in full frame video mode? I need so much to know if it even works. Thank you!
Officially the 20mm isn’t supposed to be compatible. I don’t own the lens but I think it just wouldn’t cover enough of the sensor when squeezed.
@@BrandonLiUnscripted yep for sure it won't cover, but when use Sony without open gate cropping would be enough I guess, but the only way to check is real try. I am afraid that it wouldn't even work for some digital reasons

Something is up with the bokeh, it's as if the bokeh is smushed together. Can't really tell exactly what it is, but it,s too sharp and segmented i guess. The squeeze factor changing during close focusing is expected. My thought is that the weird bokeh has to do something with the glass itself.
Some of the shots look squeezed... like the desqueeze factor was set incorrectly...
It's likely synchro focus so the squeeze changes depending on the focus distance

@brandonliunscriped Look the "95mm clamp to M95x0.75 female thread adapter" from RafCamera => 95mm clamp to 95mm female thread. I ordered it, with a VND 95mm, hope it wont vignette on the 35mm.
Btw, looks like it's not 1.7 squeeze to me, more or less 1.6 here

lindseyoptics is selling for not cheap 110$ a clamp-on to filter thread in 95mm, which should be perfect foir the adapter, I will buy it for surre !
Hey bro, I should receive mine in few days, but why not using clip on sensor nd ? It's the easiest way to avoid lens clip-on, and i am pretty sure i'ts way easier to change lens quickly ! I will go for this for sure ! I am just afraid for the front lens naked.
Otherwise, for the balance, you have the counterweight from smallrig which I use, very compact and easy to use. I can"t wait to try this on my Crane 4, which has pretty strong motors.
BTW, we can see that Samyang always present their adapter as MF adapter, maybe their will be a AF adapter in few years ! But it will be very heavy.
Finally, have you a feedback about IS ? I wonder if wen can activate the steadyshot in manual mode, and find something near our focal lentgh ?

Please... No one seems to be telling us if these are synchro focus or not. I'm guessing since no one is saying that it is a constant squeeze, that it is synchro focus...
You can't obviously tell when using it or looking at the lens while focusing. Distance data is communicated to the Sony camera though as you focus. My gut feeling is that it is single focus - and the "soft focus" uncouples the two focus points to achieve that disjointed look.
@@JonGordonTV if you look closely at at the optics, it seems like a synchro focus setup. Some people have commented that the squeeze looks off and if it variable squeeze that would explain it
@@heroaomedia Following up. I tested it out with a Helios 58mm as the taking lens, and the 1.7x handheld in front. I was wrong. To change focus, you need to adjust the focal distance on both the taking lens and the anamorphic element.

Yeah the bokeh looks weird.
Just like any other anamorphic lens.
I have to say the bokeh is the deal breaker for me. It either looks like Tylenol capsules or Taco shells to me, depending on the lens, and I don't find either of those shapes particularly appealing for general anamorphic work. If I were shooting a drug or Mexican food commercial then then perhaps that would have some appeal, but give me ovals for almost everything else.
No filter thread is going to be a huge killer for so many I'm sure of it! I am also struggling to love the overall character, I love the overly textured Bokeh but it still doesn't look quite right in many places.. It's an expensive kit to also still be working with an adapter, as it's extra things to change with each lens swap ect and I am concerned the tolerance will loosen overtime and the adapter will wiggle on the end of the mount causing havoc.
I think squeezing still needs work. it's like the people have long faces

The whole reason these lenses were supposed to exist is because they had electronic contacts on the front to allow smart adapters. So the fact that they released a fully manual adapter makes zero sense to me. Pass
U would rather have a manual lens when film making because U don't want the shot to jump focus accidently only to realise after the shoot. For solo filming and some shoots where it may not be so particular it may be ok. But for instances where U are paying actors etc U want to control the focus. Esp for purposeful creative decisions.

Aren’t the electronic contacts what make this adapter possible? Without electronic contacts, how would it:
- lock the taking lens to infinity focus
- set up soft focus mode
Plasticky Sony skin tones and gaudy colours.
