    I'm coming up to the end of my first year in art school and I'm definitely going through a lot of similar situations as Lilith,, Although theres not much of an all nighter 'trend' between my peers theres definitely a 'leave it to the last minute' attitude about all our projects.. It's hard not to be influenced by that because we are all include a group chat where we share our work and chat about classes.. I'm also super guilty of coming into the course with an overconfident mindset but everyone in my class is so talented in their own way and so I've kind of lost my sense of purpose throughout this year. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and advice on art school!! I feel better knowing that other people feel the same way as I do right now 💖💖

    I'm not in art school (I'm an engineering student and my major is urban planning) but this was still very relevant to me! Thank you for the precious advice ✨ It is very relaxing to listen to your voice as well. Now I feel motivated for my day, hopefully I'll study efficiently!
    Also, when I feel like my physical strength isn't the best, I try to get my blood circulating, so maybe go for a walk and stretch afterwards? Sometimes I get so engrossed in my work that I don't really do any physical activity for a while, and it's tiring for the body to be too sedentary. Hope you'll feel better soon ~

    • @pyperbleucollective
      @pyperbleucollective  Před 4 lety +3

      I always forget to stretch! Thank you~~ I have to find a way to build better habits for my physical body, I *know * I should be exercising but I am very sedentary and low energy (it all goes straight to my brain and manifests as complex thoughtforms) I get hungry very easily when I am in studio I have to eat every hour!
      I'm currently reading about urban planning since you've mentioned it, and it's super interesting but also seems incredibly intimidating as a major;;

      Could you share a bit about your experience majoring in urban planning?

    • @gaelle3160
      @gaelle3160 Před 4 lety +5

      @@leiasing76 Of course! A bit of context first: I'm a French student, and I studied physics, mathematics and general engineering science for three years before I started studying urban planning and urban engineering last year.
      Because of my strong scientific background, I found urban planning frustrating and unsettling at first. I was used to equations and having precise hypotheses, and urban planning forced me to consider problems at a much bigger scale.
      I am so glad I chose this major though. There is a historical aspect to it - it is very satisfying to wander around Paris and be able to explain why the city looks the way it does - and just like arts there have been different currents influencing urban planners in the way they shape cities. There is also a scientific and very practical aspect: people have needs that need to be met efficiently such as transportation, water, sewage, etc. and your plans also have to meet the local political agenda, as your client (the city, region, state, etc.) has to be satisfied with your solution.
      Does that answer your question? (: (sorry for writing loads ;o;)

      @pyperbleucollective  Před 4 lety +8

      wow! I am so envious;; I actually considered going to grad school for art history, but I feel like I am stronger as a visual artist ;-; it took me many years to appreciate history as a whole, I used to think science + technology was far superior because it meant humanity was focusing on the future and moving forward, but there is nowhere to go if you do not learn from past mistakes, and historians are like The Givers of our society, even though most of their labor is taken for granted/they are underfunded compared to STEM majors.

People don't really understand how much time and investment you have to spend on everything.Inspiration doesn't come suddenly I'm looking everywhere for ideas to help me have my piece (also from your videos🤗). In my experience, I advise others not to look at other students and see how good they are in comparison to you In the end, it is your investment and effort that you should value and not be disappointed in yourself in relation to the work of others.

    I just graduated from my uni this year and got my art degree and concentration in graphic design. I always felt like I opted out, choosing graphic design, especially feeling so lost post-grad. I also felt like I opted out in terms of not going to a strict private art school even though I do hear a lot of artists say that you can grow with or without it. I'm still coming to terms with it and trying to move forward with where I'm at. I don't regret choosing graphic design and I still do paint and illustrate.
    Right now I'm keeping up with inktober, and that's good enough as a step in the right direction! Thank you for this video, I appreciate your point of view and the advice. If you have any advice on staying motivated, especially hearing that you don't listen to podcasts or have any distractions while working, I'd love to hear how you get in the zone! Thank you, I hope you have an awesome day!

      Thank you for your message! almost everybody is affected by the post-grad existential crisis, don't be too hard on yourself! being practical is not 'opting-out', and it doesn't mean you have given up on anything. you are working within your limitations, and choosing what works best for you under those circumstances, and that's what matters the most.

    I went to art school a couple years ago, and I definitely agree with all your advice!
    In my case, I did not get to graduate because of financial + health reasons, and decided it was wiser to quit. I could not afford the school anymore and was really suffering from a bad burnout. Now, a whole year has passed, and I am ready to create again, and find joy in it again. I'm trying not to keep any regrets from my experience. I think it's important to recognize that art school will never be worth jeopardizing your well-being. If it means going into troublesome debt or risking your mental/physical health, it's important to know that you can take a break or quit school; your portfolio and your contacts are what matter the most, and technically you don't need art school to work on those, though it surely helps.
    Anyhow, I wish good luck to anyone still in art school, or who's in my situation and trying to figure out how to go pro without a degree, it's tough but never forget why you chose art in the first place! :)

    13:58 omg this! i am not an art student ( even tho i wish i was ) there’s this same concept in my college as well! i am a third year med student and this was soooo overwhelming for me especially during first year. i was already clinically diagnosed with insomnia but when i heard my classmates sleeping for only a few hrs bcs they were up studying, it just made me feel so less efficient somehow. i know that a part of it is relative to the fact that our syllabus can be super vast but that mindset was just too draining and unhealthy for me as an individual. i have slowly mastered the art of going at my own pace and not letting other’s own way of learning and habits affect my work and i immensely improved on my second year end exams. it’s so refreshing to hear that the same pattern exists in other lines of education and not only in medical schools !

    • @wariwarin
      @wariwarin Před 2 lety

      to add on i learnt that me sleeping for a few hrs was not equivalent to being productive; i instead learnt how to efficiently utilise the time when i am awake, so that was way more effective in my case. also it’s always been medically proven that we need a good night sleep before big events like exams but i was too stubborn and once went to give my finals with only an hour of sleep and i messed up badly bcs my brain was foggy. but in reality the amount of stuff that i had to learn and revise is always so many that i hardly sleep for three hours during exams tho…and this affects me badly bcs i tend to hallucinate when i get too little sleep.

El exceso de confianza y el compararse con los demás constantemente. Right now I'm starting to post my art online and it's more stressful than I could imagine. It's weird! I look at my work and think that it is good enough, but when I'm about to post it I suddenly get self-contious, I start to feel that my works are not that presentable and interesting. I try to overcome this feeling, but I'm still unnerved.
    I won't stop posting, I've been drawing in secret for 4 years and I feel that my skill is high enough, but the stress is REAL!! I feel like this is just a period and it will get more easy in he future, but for now I'm dead... Maybe someone had similar experience with posting art online, I'd love to hear about your feelings during that time!

    As someone who goes to a public university with an arts program, and is also 29 I feel like my experience has been somewhat different. I think that there are different expectations at a public university not better or worse just different. My experience of needing to be at school all the time creating has only really been a thing this semester as I start my thesis work. It just doesn’t seem like there are enough hours in a day. I think it is good to take time for yourself something for sure but that is something I’ve only learned in the last 2-3 years. I think it is hard to stay focused especially so close to the end but to all of you going through school there are many people who understand and can support you.

    Hey Lilith, first of all thank you for sharing your experience through your video. The tricks and tips you have about time management are valuable and overall the work life balance struggle in art school is very relatable. I see many friendships either spreading thin or dissolving due to me prioritizing work and academics. It can be challenging to keep a healthy balance in all the aspects that make up a exciting, rich living experience, friends, food, sleep, work, hobbies or time to think. I am writing this comment while being right in the maze of colliding assignments and approaching deadlines in Fashion 1, it is hard to have a good overview on what is going on in the bigger picture. Your video helped with that. Anyway, I am glad you shared this, I hope you are doing well, and keep going with what you do!

    I love hearing about other peoples experiences and what they've learned along the way! even though i'm not an art student and don't do much art it's still inspiring to watch artists and learn from them!
    this year I've been challenging myself to try new things and find what really makes me happy; I joined a gym and started taking singing lessons (I'd always felt too embarrassed to sing even to myself!) and i'm excepting offers for jobs and social events that scare me because I now know that the worst that can happen is a little embarrassment that will fade overtime.... I also booked a 35 day trip to Europe with a bunch of strangers! I've stopped waiting for adulthood and decided to just put myself out there and work hard to become the person my younger self always thought I would be. ♥️

      35 days!! that's awesome I'm so happy for you :') I haven't had a chance to travel solo yet, but I feel like it's definitely a life-changing experience I want at least once in my life. I love what you said about "I've stopped waiting for adulthood and decided to just put myself out there," I really resonated with those words...even now, I find myself torn between feeling like I'm a child and feeling like I'm finally responsible/able to handle life stressors like a grown up :3c I don't like how it's sort of a binary switch at the moment, I hope to find a way to bridge the two "identities" if you will. thank you for sharing your thoughts with me

    I'm a current Art History major prior to being a zoology major for a hot minute (so the whole STEM vs Liberal arts thing wheeeew). I definitely fell into the whole "not sleeping culture" because I am being "productive" to the point where I suffered insomnia for about a year in a half basically pointlessly staying up. I'm still not perfect at managing everything but I think as long as you make improvements to try to better your work ethic and self it shouldn't be too much of an issue. I do feel like my first two years were very pointless when taking my introductory courses I found no interest in the course work or did not understand the reason behind the assignments other than we have to do it to get the experience/grade. Which was true, but not necessarily encompassing the whole course. It was extremely frustrating and time consuming because I couldn't find another reason or didn't want to find a purpose in what I was doing. Now I am at a point where I am enjoying the studios I am finding purpose in our assignments in class as well as in hw.(As we speak I am currently studying for Native american art history class midterm ) I really appreciate your advice to incoming freshman and current students

    I'm 15 and about to start school next year and I have 2 options. School 1 is a professional school of fine arts and the 2nd one is a school where I would be learning about magazine design, animation, more business like and has less to do with art, for example there at the application I didn't have to show artworks or anything, yet this school gives more stability.
    So I got accepted into both schools and the choice is a 100% mine, my family supports me whatever I decide. For the last 2 years my goal in life was to get into that art school, but now that I'm finally there I'm scared. What if I'll burn out, if everyone else will be much more talented than me, if I will be wishing that I chose the other school durring the hours long drawing classes, if I finish art school but I've lost my passion for art but I won't be able to do anything cuz I didn't had enough math class.... I know these quetions may sound stupid and over worried but this is the first big decision of my life and I'm just scared. If anyone got any advice or some personal experience I'm lisening.

    This really helped alot... I'm a senior in hs and I'm thinking about applying to art schools in California (my dream art school would be the Art Center College of Design). It was really good to watch this video, mostly because I'm not sure if art school would be what I really should do? I want to become a UI designer at some point in my life, but I don't have the skills right now...that's why I'm looking into majoring in illustration if I did go to art school. Alot of my life right now is trying to figure out how to create my nonexistent portfolio and what I really should be doing. Thank you so much for this video, it really had alot of good information.

    • @pyperbleucollective
      @pyperbleucollective  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Jessica~ I recommend maybe starting with Pasadena City College to acquire your GE's before applying to ArtCenter, because they don't accept any credits from outside their own institution after you've enrolled (bureaucracy BS)
      Illustration is very different from UI; if you feel like UI is where your passion lies, it is worth taking some time to build up a good portfolio after hs + get the art history 101s and drawing 101s out of the way at a junior college for the same credit and a fraction of the cost. You'd also be considered as a transfer, in which you will receive priority for course registration vs. if you started ArtCenter as a freshman right out of hs. This is my experience from 2014, they might have changed the policies...(I doubt it tho)
      I wish you the best! Don't worry, your career will be long and you don't have to have everything figured out right now. If anything, building healthy habits such as: making time to cook for yourself + clean + do laundry are super crucial esp for ArtCenter, and good driving skills, too! (There are many, many, manyyyy car accidents every semester at that school, and it's awful)
      I hope you will believe in yourself and apply that towards your passion!

    I can very much relate to not being statisfied about any of my work and it all being very hectic. I have graduated and I don't really know how I did it either. I wasn't statsfied at all even with my graduation work. But somehow I made it and can be proud of that. I am now not doing anything. Trying to find the fun and motivation again. Learning how to be less strict and critical about myself is a huge thing I'm busy with right now.. I kinda feel like I'm a mess, standing at the bottom of some huge mountain I need to climb, or something. But first, I really have to change the way I treat myself unconsciously. Because climbing the mountain is not going to be fun AT ALL this way.
