      Same ! I want to transfer to an art school but I also want to experience true culture of a regular university, living in a dorm, make new friends and spending nights at the library going to parties, being more involved with school activities/ events . My university is 11 miles from where I live. I live with my parents so I don’t really get to experience all that. I just go to class then go home but I want to attend an out of state university but is there a university with as many resources of an art school. I think I can get the most of an art school, where there’s more majors and professors are more certified to help and teach students .

      Edgar Allen Hoes maybe it would be worth it to go into a university visual arts bachelor and take lots of design credits. Don't you need a bachelor to get into law school anyways? Or is that med school I'm thinking of aha. If it's the same where you need a Ba before hand then it would be worth it to get your Ba in visual arts because then you'll have lots of experience with visual arts and design and it will probably be easier to decide!

    In simpler terms, I believe an artist should learn as much as possible.

    some universities do not require you to have a portfolio when applying. Even when applying for your specific major they don't require it. They only require it after your sophomore year after taking your pre-requisites for a general art major degree. Also at most universities the population in your specific major isn't that small. Most art majors at a university load you with a lot of work art wise and you are very much surrounded by art and have a lot of resources to choose from and you have more than enough professors to choose from and ask for help.There are plenty of majors and minors to choose from that a cool and unique. idk but i felt like the video was based on your experience at uconn and wanted to give a second view from a different state! Hope this helps!

    • @sweetpeach9421
      @sweetpeach9421 Před 7 lety +60

      Biana Bova Yeah My university treats everyone like they have no prior experience, so they only do a portfolio review after you've taken 2 years of entry level classes. Also my art building is open 24 hours and there is an option to live in a dorm with art students so you can be completely immersed in art. Even in the library there is an art museum with individual rooms to study in, There are sculptures all around the campus and their are a group of kids that actually come up with crafts for other students with other majors to do. My university is a great environment for artists to be in. It really depends on the university! It's so important to visit the campus before choosing because i have visited some schools where their art programs aren't the best and isn't properly looked after or ends up getting programs dropped.

    I do like that you said that this isn't the same at every art school. I'm about to go to Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, WA. It's 2 hours south of my hometown. They have a lot of clubs for an art school, plus they are trying to make sure that they house people with different majors since we have both visual and performing arts students. It definitely is different at every school, but a lot of it does stay the same.

    Ive been thinking about whether I want to transfer to a University, and I'm still kind of on the fence about it. I'm a graphic design major, and I've learned a lot at the school I'm going to right now, but I've honestly learned a lot more on my own. There are a ton of free resources out there and I was a little surprised to find that my design professor was pulling a lot of the material she was teaching us from CZcams. I think the most beneficial thing that a University could provide me is resources and opportunities. I've been able to support myself financially through working as a freelancer by the things I've learned at school and what I've taught myself. My goal is to own and operate my own graphic design/photography studio and I'm honestly on the fence whether University will help me get there.

    The biggest difference I saw was this: At many university art departments (especially if a college has a major called "studio art"), everything is kind of loose, the instructors don't teach but merely philosophize, and you can fudge assignments, because the standards aren't that serious. Someone from this kind of college art department would transfer to my art school, be fooled by the seeming informality of the place, and would slack off or do what they wanted the way they were used to doing at a regular college. The sucker punch came at the end of the semester, when the transferee from a college art department suddenly finds out he really was supposed to do all those assignments, and the actual assignments, not what he felt like substituting for them, and gets hammered on his grades. Might even flunk out.

    • @pencilCasey000
      @pencilCasey000 Před 4 lety +4

      James Kirchner well, i go to community college and major in studio art. I work my ass off to even try to get an A on any assignment/project. Some professors are so freaking difficult, they grade you so incredibly strictly. I am also learning a LOT i didn’t know previously, and have found a new interest within graphic design as well.. so, i don’t think what you’re saying applies all the time. I feel as if I’m really going to have a great portfolio and be ready for when I transfer to my nearby uni/art school. Also, I’m not dumb or anything, i have a 4.0 (majored in comp sci before this and ended up switching for reasons).

Only two "schools", whereas if you go to some universities the classes, communities etc are the same as you defined art school. But i 100% agree on the portfolio and selection process, as a University student they did focus a bit more on our grades, but in the end it just benefits you as an individual. I am currently at the beginning of my third year at a university. However, just a few weeks ago, I applied to two art schools as a transfer student. My university has been pretty great. The professors are amazing and I have met some incredible people. The department is still small so everyone pretty much knows each other which is really nice. My personal reasons for trying to transfer were similar to the ones said in this video. I found that an education from a university is geared towards creating portfolios that are more commercial based. I am looking for a more specialized education where I can focus on my portfolio. The general education classes can be interesting but some of the classes like biology, political science, etc. aren’t necessarily interesting to me. Quite frankly, I find them to be a waste of time for what I’m specifically looking for. When looking at the courses offered at art school, there are a lot more options to explore specific areas within your field which I found the most appealing about art school. There are also all kinds of art schools and universities with programs that differ greatly so it is all about doing research and knowing what kind of education you are looking for. If you are looking to transfer, I would do so as early as possible just because not all of the credits you take (especially the general education classes) will transfer to an art school. The one downside that I found was cost but there are lots of scholarships and options available so I would not let those numbers discourage you, especially if you have a solid portfolio and decent grades. Pick schools that you think would be best for you, not what other people think will be. I wish you all the best of luck finding the path that is right for you!

    im a junior and I want to major in art when i get to college, (when i figure out where i go) It would be my dream just to make art everyday. I practice painting, watch tutorials and try to follow them but i know that i need more than just that. Im going to keep practicing and get better. But then its the choosing which schools/universities to apply for. Art supplies alone can be pricey and school is another story. Thanks for this video! it helped a lot!

    That's cool that you're attending (or are finished now) at Mass Art! Mass Art turned me away from attending there about four different times, telling me that I needed to attend an industrial design college (for car design). I ended up attending the Academy of University, located in San Francisco, CA (from 2004-2008), then transferred down to Art Center College of Design located in Pasadena, CA (2009), then I also studied at the Concept Design Academy (also located in Pasadena, CA, in 2017). I'm happy that everything has seemed to work out well for you at UConn and at Mass Art! 😁

    Hi and nice video! This kinda stuff I think about a lot and I was at MICA in the late 60's. Before MICA I went to a two year community college (also an art major there) At the community college we had very few art majors. Of the few art teachers there were two of them were great!! Fantastic fine artists and really cared about there students! That was pure luck I think...a roll of the dice that was lucky. These two teachers were as good as the best at MICA and seemed to put forth more effort to teach. Some of the teachers at MICA were also good teachers as well but seems many are teachers were just a warm body in the room. So interesting on what your saying about all this. As Paul Harvey used to say "Now for the rest of the story." That is what happens when students get out of art schools or regular colleges.....and how many maintain their art interest or never pick up a brush again.

    I’m literally transferring out of UCONN this semester and going to an art school!! I’m so excited to be surrounded by artist and art. I didn’t like being at UCONN for art because I had to take all these bullshit classes that had nothing to do with my major. It was a pain because I had to take a bunch of classes that I had no interest in and that I wasn’t good in so it really affected my gpa. I’m super excited to go to an art school that focuses on art only and be apart of that type of community! On the downside I practically got a free ride at UCONN which was nice and super stress relieving, but it’s kind of pointless if they don’t have what I want or satisfying what I need

I live in VA and VCUarts is pretty much the best and only in-state option I've got but it seems very "fine arts" based and I'm not a fan of that considering I'm an animation kind of guy. I wanna be able to draw how I want within the curriculum that the school has. Yet I'm still stuck on whether its better to go there or a place like SCAD, I got accepted but didn't go because of financial problems white is pretty much my only real hurdle that can't just go away. When I applied to my uni for illustration, they were pretty relaxed with existing grades. They told us they just look for potential, not the grades. (One friend didn't have much good grades and shes a decent artist and she got in.).
    So I'm guessing the UK dose a lot different from the US. Its just the art projects, dissertation and business studies. I don't think that we have 'art schools' here, its uni or college mainly, if anything your art school is more like our universities.

    I actually don’t think there are art schools in Spain (not like anyone could afford one or want to go to one). There are thankfully universities that cost around 200-400€ a year that are public, not sure if the credits which is 30€ for every credit enter in that price, but it’s a lot more affordable for everyone. We don’t usually choose where we go, we just go to the closest and cheapest university of our major, very few people move to cities like Barcelona or Madrid to study.
    And I’m not sure because I haven’t gone yet, but in beauty arts and even “high school” you stop doing all of the classes that aren’t necessarily for your academics, like you have languages, philosophy and gym, but if you go to a good high school that wants to specialize you, you will be in your specific classes more than in the others. While in university, I think all of your classes are geared towards your major.

    This was very informative and came from a place of knowledge, thank you!! This is truly the only video on this topic I've seen. Also I like that you touched on that it's important to look at the art program at a university but I was to REALLY reiterate this to anyone that reads this comment. I went back to college after a few years and while working full time and I went to a local community college. The had an art major option so I thought that would be a great start to build a portfolio. EXTREMELY WRONG. The school's "art" program was literally just one (1) small office looking room in a big office building with carpeted floors. It had two sinks in the back and a measly closet with some art books and some "still life" objects. It was so sad and pathetic and I found that the professors were all adjunct (meaning they don't have a permanent job at the school, they floated around between teaching at a few schools) and while definitely knew some things, they were all disappointed in the "program" and also couldn't really teach much because I think in the three art classes I took, I was one of maybe 2 other art students per 30 kid class so like.... they was no ability for growth, everything was extremely basic and catered towards the students who were only there for credits. It was so pathetic and sad and it's ridiculous that the school even offered it as a major if that was all it was going to be. So yeah. Look into it.
    tl;dr just because a school offers art as a major, doesn't mean it's a fully fledged program. It could literally just be one room and a handful of teachers showing you how to do extremely basic painting and graphite drawing.
