  • CN rebuilt 18 SW1200RSs to SW1200RMs in 1987 at its Pointe St. Charles shops in Montreal. Three of these are still in use by CN.
    Nine of these locomotives are seen in this video taken in the Halifax are in the late 1990s. Usually they worked with a second locomotive - often an unrebuilt SW1200RS (note that the spark arrestors have been removed on the rebuilt units) In one case the SW1200RM worked with a GMD-1 which clearly shows the size difference even though both units are 1200hp!

    7300, 01' 7303-06, 7309 and 7311 were regulars in Vancouver. I used to love switching with them.

      Good to hear they were popular with crews. I always liked the visibility on the Alco switchers when running backwards.

    Cool vid. Like those sw1200s. @ 3:24...you don't see too many guys riding the footboard anymore. That's steam type old school there.

    ..........ohhh!!........ this is something I have been wondering about for years.since the 80's......... Those freaky looking double smokestacks mounted on a horizontal cylinder ( engine #1363) are spark arrestors...!!

    • @david-othen
      @david-othen  Před 9 lety

      Yes CN used these on many GM locomotives.

    Notice the beefed up frame sill under the walkway of 7300 for added ballast. These units could pull at slow speeds.

    • @david-othen
      @david-othen  Před 10 lety

      Canadian Trackside Guide lists the weight of an SW1200RS as 222000 - 226000 lbs whereas the 7300 are 246000. I am not sure whether this is a heavier engine block 12V-645C versus 12V-567C or extra ballast

      I've never noticed that before! A little searching came up with this photo that shows the additional plating pretty clearly.

    A small shortline a few miles west of me has one of the ex 7300 series in its roster, been trying to get videos and/or photos of it for years but they rarely run, besides the fact its during weekdays when I normally can't get out to catch them running.

      No Na Me Hope you are able to do so soon. Can you ask the railroad staff when they expect to run a train?

    • @kittycraft
      @kittycraft Před 9 lety

      I would love to, but I think they might only have 3-5 employees. And besides that, they're never around from the many times I've been there.

      No Na Me 1216 was probably not a rebuilt unit like the 7300s because it still has the CN spark arrestors. When CN rebuilt SW1200Rss into the 7300 series the spark arrestors were normally removed.

  • @iggyjill

    I love the near hit at 13 30 mark that little car would have been squashed against the SW1200 alone. Also how come there different sizes of the spark resisters on the 1342?

    • @david-othen
      @david-othen  Před 9 lety

      That is a small private crossing into Fader Industries. There is a STOP sign but not everyone observes it! However the crews do keep an eye open for vehicles approaching!

    Nice video David. If I am not mistaken some of the 7300 series were used in Bridgewater weren't they?

    • @david-othen
      @david-othen  Před 10 lety +2

      It is certainly possible though I have no photos of the 7300s in the Halifax area until after the Bridgwater section closed. May be someone else has photographic evidence of them in Bridgewater - Duane Porter at the H&SW Museum in Lunenburg might know.
