  • Akai MPC - Guitar Recording into the MPC LIVE using the Art Tube Studio V3 ( amzn.to/2E2h7w6 ) to record into audio tracks. I record 2 different sequences, one with 2 different guitar parts layered using 2 different audio tracks. This is episode 2 in my Matthew Creating Music Series.

    My gut tells me that the MPC Live is a great "multi-track" recording solution for the singer/songwriter. Your vids are showing how this is possible and its getting me pumped to go buy one. Thanks so much for these simple demos. Keep it up!

    As per your explanation flow, I’m glad you get warmed up quick. It sounds more like you’re dictating what you already know how to do, which is perfect I think for this type of video.
    Those who have tons of experience with console bus recording (sends & returns, 1/4” to 2” tape, compression racks and aural exciters all running from a power source that smells, hums, and requires the entire basement floor of a warehouse office building, etc) from the world prior to computers and DAWs to the 12 year old girl who just figured out how to record one guitar track over the top of another while playing along with it.... 🤯should be able to get something out of listening to your process and your explanation of how you understand what you are doing.
    There is no correct way, but there are definitely ways to f up some good ideas, which used to be much less frequent when using a TASCAM PORTA ONE Cassette 4 track. No undos, etc.
    cool video. I’m really thinking of going all in on MPC.
    I’m a drummer who has played Ludwig and TAMA kits in bands and sessions, but I have spent most of my disciplined time on guitar. After sampling my drums in various ways I realized I probably don’t need them as much as I need a standalone MPC, rather than the iMPC PRO2 App for my iPad Pro. Any suggestions,?

    So multi tracking the way you are, is it possible you can make fully fledge song like, 3-4 minutes whatever, with varying drum patterns,etc. and guitar/other instrument tracks? Or are these tracks you recorded stuck in a loop/one shot mode? I'm basically asking can I use this like as a full on DAW?

      Yes it is a standalone unit, but can also be used in conjunction with the software on a pc to give you more options but the software on pc is a bit clunky. The trick is to learn how to stack tracks onto sequences and then arrange those sequences into songs. It’s not hard but the mpc is sequence driven.

    Thank you for sharing your wisdom! I've had the mpc live II for a couple of months and haven't found a comfortable workflow yet with Ableton...Currently, I have a template Ableton session setup and am at a standstill...I am now looking for a way to save a template of the modified mpc pad outputs, so the outputs remain the same no matter what program I load (3,4 | 5,6 | 6,7|, etc.)...Also, I noticed that when using MPC in controller mode with MPC software as a plugin in Ableton, I get no sound from the sampler or looper (even when "IN" is selected and the track record is armed). The sound comes through with issues in standalone mode or in controller mode with MPC software...Just no sound from the sampler when using the software as a plugin from within Ableton. Thanks again and hope to hear from you soon!

    • @MatthewStratton
      @MatthewStratton  Před 3 lety +3

      Yes. MPC Live only has line level inputs. You need something to turn your instrument level signal into line level as the MPC Live doesn't have instrument level inputs. You can use a variety of devices to convert your signal like an amp simulator. You can record your instrument level into the mpc live using the line in, it just wont have the full tone.

      @WarrenPostma Před 2 lety

      @@MatthewStratton Having a wide variety of effects on there, including some amp sound, and some cabinet simulation, reverb, etc, to get a realistic guitar, a great option would be a Helix LT, HX Stomp, or PodGo. If you're still doing guitar into MPCs have you given those floor multi effect units a shot? They should be awesome.

    Hi Matthew, thanks for documenting this, I have a question. If I want to add a linear vocal track over something produced in Akai Force is the best bet to produce a final mix and export it from the Akai and import it into something like garage band and dub the vocals using that? Or is therer another way to do it which keeps it entirely in the Akai Force. If the former is best how easy is it too mix down a track for use in something like Garage Band. Many thanks, regards Bill

    Guitar tip for MPC: get yourself a good all in one pedalboard like Line 6 HX Stomp, Line 6 Helix, Headrush MX5, Fractal FM9, Boss GT 1000, etc.... That will cover your cabinets, amps, effects, etc. Then run that into your MPC. The point being that you want to get a quality guitar tone BEFORE going in to MPC to make your life easier.

      If you have the monitor on Auto you need to arm the channel for record before you can hear it. Or you can turn your monitor to on. Also, make sure you have the input volume (rec vol) turned up on the back.

But when I record, the playback is much lower than when I recorded. I'm wondering since I plugged it in the L port not both L and R dividing the sound(not sure if I need pre-amp like you)? 2. Also when I go to the pad mute option, it works for the MIDI tracks but not for the audio tracks. It gives me a "pad mute is not available for audio track". Is there a way to remove that error? The mpc live inputs are line level. You need a device like I am using in the video to make instrument level inputs to line level. You can use a DI box, the level will just be low. Using a pre amp you can increase the level of the signal.

      If you use the erase tool inside the second tab down in audio tracks of main mode, you should be able to erase the wave out of one sequence and it should not effect the other sequences. On the other had if you mute an audio track, it will mute that audio track on all the sequences.

    Hey Matthew thanks for the video. I have a question: when I connect a guitar cable from my guitar amp phones out (which I assume is at line level and means I don’t need a preamp) and into a single input L or R of the MPC LIVE the signal is super quiet even when I sample in mono and with one input. But if I use a splitter into two guitar cables into both L and R inputs the signal is normal again. The gain knob at the back is set to high and the switch is set to Line in. You seem to be able to get signal from a single line input though. How can I do this? What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

    • @MatthewStratton
      @MatthewStratton  Před 3 lety

      Sounds like your headphone out is stereo which is to be expected. The guitar cable is an instrument TS cable and isn't designed for a stereo output. The output I am using is mono and is line out and is designed to go into a line level input.

      A simple preamp pedal would be enough, the direct box is not helpful here. A multi-effect pedal with an integrated preamp would be ideal. • @MatthewStratton
      @MatthewStratton  Před 4 lety

      It is recommended that you use something to convert your instrument signal into a line level signal for the best results when using the line in on the MPC Live. Some pre-amps have instrument level inputs. Some guitar pedals have a line level out or a "record out" that is line level. You can use a DI box, but you do lose volume if it is passive. You could plug your guitar into the line level ins on the MPC Live but the impedance would be different and it doesn't sound as good. Run a quick search about Live Level vs. Instrument level.
