I originally bought my Tiger 900 thinking I would be able to do the WA BDR on it. At my age and skill level, it was impossible for me. I hurt for WEEKS after doing one section. Picking that bike up over and over was not in my category of fun at all. It’s a great bike for exactly what you said - highway to the location and then gravel / dirt roads while there. So that is how I have been using it. Since I already own it and have it all kitted I will probably keep in a few more years. But I don’t see myself buying another big adventure bike. I did also buy a bagger, and it is fantastic for long distance rides. But when I just want to rip around town its not the best bike for that.
I think everyone needs to decide what the types of rides they want to do, and then get the bike that works for them. Every bike is an adventure bike depending on what you call adventure. Hope all is well, sorry life has thrown you a curve.

Living in the Rockies made me rethink this. I had a Himalayan and I did love that bike but getting to a lot of the trails to ride was such a pain so I went with a more medium bike in a BMW 750gs and am happy. I don't do single track or anything super technical but have taken it on the same routes as the Himalayan and it performed great.

I agree Joe. My ADV bike is the 2006 KLR650. It does about anything I ask, is ridiculous as it's simplicity and a huge online community to support. I am still a Sportster fan for the exact same reasons. Smaller displacement, weight and simple design.

I've heard it's pretty good. Haven't rode one to test it. There is a model that comes with side cases, LED spot lights standard. They are value priced as well. I put 1" lowering links on the shock, and slid the forks up 1" in the triple trees. Just to make it a bit easier to get both feet down. KLR is a good 70% road-30% off road bike. Wish I was riding it on the roads on this video! Oh..6 gallon gas tank a plus too.

The only advantage a big monster of adventure bike has over a small one is comfort. I have traveled the Western US on a small Ninja 650R and Beta 498 dual sport. As well as my Yamaha Super Tenere. As I age it is Super Tenere all day long!! For long road trips with smooth fire roads thrown in there is not much better for comfort in the saddle. If I'm going to get into some rough tracks on the way then I pull out my Beta and suffer the long miles of getting ping ponged on the freeway.

Despite the "small bike" travels I had when I started this channel, I can't agree with you more about comfort as I age. I really love the Africa Twin and there will be another in my stable at some point for the same reasons you have your Super Tenere. The trailhead for the T.W.A.T. is about an hour from me. Not too much suffering on the CRF300L, but worth it once the adventure begins on the trail.

The price is high but I just gotta have one. I currently have a Goldwing and an Africa Twin Adv Sports, both DCT. And while taking a good look at my Wing, it was a goal fulfilled from many years ago, but I like the seating position of my AT more even though it is taller (my AT has been lowered with springs). I’m in the process of downsizing my Wing, maybe back to a V-Twin this time around. The Wing is kind of too much tech (and some is not and has not ever worked the right way). Smaller is better a little better in a lot of cases.

Personally, I never saw the point of adventure bikes. They are too big and heavy for technical work off road unless you're an accomplished dirt rider. In which case, being an accomplished dirt rider, I can say that there are not many road bikes that can't go down gravel roads anyway. You're probably not going to ride standing on the pegs, but you could with a change of handle bars. Obviously, I am not including crotch rockets in this analysis, but I have driven them on gravel as well. Crotch rockers are not a good choice for an everyday motorcycle also. An adventure bike would be a better choice. All this being said, take any universal Japanese motorcycle from the 1970's and you have a machine that can be made adventure bike enough or crotch rockety enough to satisfy almost an rider. Bring back motorcycle freedom. Bring back the UJM in a form factor everyone can afford.

@@GreatEgret It def would not be, no one wants to be stuck in Bangkok traffic, in the crazy heat and humidity sitting on 1000cc. My 155cc Underbone is hot enough. lol
I almost bought an Africa Twin earlier this year but when I realized it would be something I maybe get to ride 3 times a year makes no sense.
I have been eyeing that same model CRF Rally tho, that seems like the perfect bike to get out of town and on the dirt with. I used to have a CRF 250 back in the day but gave it to my buddy who lives up in Chiangmai where I knew he would get more use out of it in the mountains. There may very well be one in my future tho.

My "Girl Crush" is the Himalayan. I see someone made a comment about it. I got to test ride one finally last week. Only on pavement tho #SadTrombone Mark @bikerbits called it a explorer bike. Much like your model too. His daily off roader is a DR650. He and "Angus" aka Alistar started up a podcast. He is primarally a off road trail rider. If you have never checked him out you should. He actually recently adventurized a Himie and gave it away.
You and i kinda live in a similar geographical region. That has equal amount of road twisties for cruizers. And im only a hour away from decent dirt elevated twisties. Which makes me yearn for a bike like a Himmie for a different experiece. But as you say, multiple bike on a single income. Are very cash strapping.

In 2018, on my Route 66 trip, I was hanging out with D-Cycle in Alton, IL and saw a Himalayan in the parking lot of a brewery we went to. It was the first one I saw in the wild. I’m impressed by the cost per smile with that bike.

@@GreatEgret Ya my second crush is the Honda Trail 125. I walked I to the Toronto motorcycle show. Looking to sit on a Himmie. Saw the Honda both. Made a comment about when the Trail was coming to Canada. The rep says...it's right over there.
My heart fluttered. I reached for my wallet. #ShutUpAndTakeMyMoney til I saw the price tag. The cost was the near same as a Himmie.
      Dang.
      But I straddled them both.
      :)

Solve the turn signal problem on dual sports: Take them off.

@@GreatEgret It helps avoid additional expenses and helps with resale value. The biggest problem will probably be: Is there anyone left on the planet that understands what a rider is doing with left and right hand signals while turning. 🙂

I chose to ride bikes that are considered uncool. Theres your problem. Get rid of those people that consider your bike uncool

Nah, I didn’t say in this video those people bothered me. Let them think what they want. So no problem here. The point was that some riders would consider small bikes uncool or not roadworthy and I explained in the video how that’s not the case.
