    Just bought a pair of these for my ATAS. Good quality for the price & not as flimsy as some seem to think. The 2 big advantages for me are (1) that they are designed by Honda to be bike specific & so fit perfectly and (2)yes,they are side opening which has its down side but the left side holds a full face helmet to lock & leave. You won't find a top loader that will do that.

    • @WOODZMAN
      @WOODZMAN  Před 6 lety

      Yea holding a helmet is handy

    Love mine amd I alao got a deal upon bike purchase. For any seriius off road they come off and are secured in a safe place. They give me no worries simplicity with 70 liters (a claimed 40 and 30) storage. And, that nelson rigg bag..... i took it off my previous bike and zip tied it to an altrider luggage rack which i absolutely love.

    Great video! very informative. I bought the OEM Panniers for my Adventure Sports 2018 and have spent the last week scouring the internet to see if there's an OEM Top Box to match! I bought the plate 08L70-MKK-D00 (from teh Adventure Sports brochure) but see from the M&P website that is doesn't fit the Adventure Sports model!

    • @WOODZMAN
      @WOODZMAN  Před rokem +1

      So it must be a different bolt pattern for yours then. I didnt have the top box but I would think it could be made to fit

  • @yayoi1
    @yayoi1 Před 4 lety

    Yep, OEM panniers don't leave any ugly pannier frames behind when they're off the bike. But those pannier frames also double as crash guards when bags aren't mounted on them and they provide great bungee points.for strapping down gear to your passenger seat.

    The panniers aren't bad. I have these, and i also have the GIVI frames. The givi frames are more sturdy and support all kind of standard panniers. They also protect the bike in case it goes down.

    I've just bought an Africa Twin (2016) last year in November and it has the OEM side cases. They look pretty good except one thing...the fact that they open on a side is a disadvantage. My former bike, a Yamaha Tenere XT660Z (2011) had side cases that open at the top and the key lock was at a side, so i could improvise a system on top of the lid and i could attach drybags for more storage room, thing which can't be done in this case. And yes...i also hate the look of the empty rack bars and i don't want to add that stuff to my bike. Guess i'll just buy a huge 52L top case to compensate the small right side case and hope i can get everything in. Traveling 2 up for 2-3 weeks is not easy when it comes to packing stuff :))). Great informative clip! Have a great day!

    These panniers look great and are a great price, but unfortunately not the pannier for real touring and multiple terrains. I know the other brands are expensive but they are made for the job in hand, they also hold there second hand value very well if you choose to sell them at a later date.

    • @adammfharris

      The oem panniers are very expensive as well. This guy got a once in a lifetime price. If you ever see any used for this price, let me know.

  • @robsonenduro3316
    @robsonenduro3316 Před 6 lety +1

    Interesting because every other opinion I read on these honda panniers are quite the opposite. Expensive, wobbling and delicate. Plastic on Givi trekker for instance is twice as thick. BTW mounting racks are good because serve as crash bars as well.

  • @ridenative
    @ridenative Před 4 lety +1

    From experience, however good looking these panniers may be, they are not solid at all and the right pannier has a design defect. On a very simple tip over in the parking lot, my right pannier cracked open on the bottom right corner where the impact happened. I had to use some epoxy to repair it but look is gone. More importantly, the latching started to loosen up after a few hundred miles of off-roading or heaving shaking. It is an issue widely reported in the Africa Twin blogs. These panniers were able to protect the bike though, but they couldn't save themselves. The other issue is you cannot buy a single pannier, they sell them in pairs. My advice is to invest in another more solid pannier brand or soft panniers.

  • @comhire
    @comhire Před 6 lety +3

    Bought two of these bikes with complete Honda luggage. Unfortunately one fell over and broke the side pannier top clip on one side. Honda (via our dealer) tells me you can only buy the whole side pannier set at a cost of over NZD 1,000 - no parts or no single side replacements. Will not buy this luggage again. Givi allow you to buy any small part to repair their luggage. Why can't Honda follow suit?

    • @WOODZMAN
      @WOODZMAN  Před 6 lety

    @HallvardOpheim Před 7 lety +5

    Last few months, Honda has been giving these (plus top box, centerstand and heated grips) away with all new bikes, at least over here.
    Three main issues with them:
    They are not particularly stable compared to rackmounted panniers. This may or may not be a real problem, but it sure was annoying as soon as the track surface got a bit rough.
    They are fragile. The plastic will crack on a minor impact with an unlucky angle, and it will rip off either one of the top mounts (the hooks) and/or the hinge at the bottom (cracking the plastic). It may also crack the painted plastic panel surrounding the top mounts on the bike (been there, done that, got the t-shirt). And Honda won’t sell you the top mounts despite them being separate parts from what I can tell.
    Third - it opens outwards. Which means you cant pack smaller items in any useful quantity, in particular in the left pannier, as this will empty itself into the lid when on the sidestand. They should have made them with top loading.
    The three good things are the price, the fact that you don’t need a rack, and the weight - being mostly plastic.
    I’ve done 2000km off- and onroad with the originals on a rental AT I used for a trip abroad, then opted for the sw motech trax adv with quick-removable rack on my own.

    • @WOODZMAN
      @WOODZMAN  Před 7 lety +1

      +Hallvard Opheim Yes I do with they would open from the top for sure, they work ok for me and for the price. I haven’t cracked mine but I haven’t crashed and I hope I don’t. If I go on a trip and go off road, I leave them at the camp.
      I only put mine in when I take a bigger trip so not to often.

  • @ridenative

    After going through two sets of these, we confirm they are absolute rubbish. Besides the nice initial fit with the frame and the main key, not only will they break as soon as you tip your bike in a parking lot or dirt (and you will), but the locking mechanism breaks immediately and they become loose. Invest in aftermarket.

    To be fair they do work and fit well and are easy . However you drop the bike and the plastic fixing point is breaking. They are great but not for a long adventure, expedition where you might drop the bike . Bear in mind the plastic fixing point can not be fixed . I crossed Africa and dropped the bike ( not crashed ) both sides . Both broke at the same plastic fixing hook . Headache , needed to weld metal hooks and plates and botch the panniers up . Anywhere other than Africa you would be screwed .

    In many cases the honda paniers pop off in a crash and escape with minor scuffs. I've been thinking of getting some for the quick connect functionality but can't justify the cost where my mosko bags do just fine and only really take 30 seconds to remove anyway.

    I am planning on purchasing the white 2017 Africa Twin tonight. I went into the dealership last night to take a look at it and sit on it to make sure it would be comfortable enough for long rides. I really like this bike and everything about it, until I looked at the maximum load capacity of 392 pounds. I am purchasing this motorcycle to be able to take my fiancé for day trips since I live close to Yosemite National Park. The issue here is that our combined weight is 430 pounds, so I was wondering if you knew if the motorcycle would be able to handle that? I am 6'5" and 235 pounds. She is 6'0" and 195 pounds. Large people...... Lol.

    I have been looking at these panniers as well. But I realized that the auxiliary gas tank that I’m going to be getting won’t fit unless I go for a pannier system that has the bars. The bars may be ugly as you said, but when the panniers are off it seems to me that in a fall they will act as another safety element. Have you watched Long Way round? There was an incident of the someone hitting the back of the bike and the panniers actually saved the car from hitting the back tire more then it initially did. Could the original pannier system take that kind of accident and prevent an even bigger accident? Don’t know and wouldn’t want to find out either. But thank you for all your videos!! To my wife’s dismay, I have been watching them with great enthusiasm. God Bless!

    These work great until you drop the bike, then the latch takes the brunt of the fall and then the case nevers locks well to the bike again.

    I don't understand your remark of the usual Honda quality. i think these panniers are of a very dubious quality and not worthy of Honda. Especially the locks are of a very poor quality, the side openings are downright bad and also very impractical. Fortunately I did not buy them because I had a good look at them beforehand and I recommend aluminum cases and soft bags. These may be more expensive but will definitely last longer.

I guess it’s comfy which is the main thing but geez that diamond tuck seat looks like something from a 80 s goldwing not the coolest adventure bike on the market. What’s the deal seatconcepts surely has a comfy one that isn’t so fugly??? Sorry bike is awesome great. Fantastic not negative Nellie seat just weird to me....

      Well you might think so but I had no problem with them, they worked just fine. Did you own a set ?
