The cut to Kendall rapping without the music is fucking gold. In his head, he pictures himself as some sort of cool exec with a killer instinct, but he sounds like an especially nebbish Sol Rosenberg here.
It's a great & effective foreshadowing of Kendall's perceived ability vs. actual ability, both minutes later and longer-term.
really nice and on-point analysis.
He’s actually a pretty talented guy in some aspects but negotiations are probably the worst aspect of the company for his personally to me running
He just wants to pump himself up.
He’s a bit of a badass, actually, ‘cause he doesn’t even mind that he’s being seen and heard. Even if the driver depended on me as much as this driver surely depends on the Roys, he wouldn’t EVER witness me so visibly and audibly pumping myself up. I would arrive at the meeting at least as ill-prepared as Kendall… but way less pumped up.
Good on him, giving himself what he thinks he needs.
"Do I wanna call my dad? No, I don't wanna call my dad. Do you wanna call your dad?" I fucking love the delivery holy shit I love the acid this family spits.
Pretty messed up to say that to a black guy in particular.
@@slothrop4751 nobody thought that but you
@@matthewtait2939 idk man, these writers are incredibly clever. they put a spin and an angle on every other line.
@@slothrop4751 your thought was the opposite of clever, antithesis
And then when he guts Vaulter he says "My Dad told me too."
When I first watched this scene I thought Kendall was going to be SUCH a different character from what he ends up being, its insane
Like how
@@sdhjsjana72js And yet Kendall is crying in his daddy's arms a season later... have you seen the whole show?
@@yasseford i think "different" in terms of his level of self-awareness. Later on in the show, albeit, his self-awareness is still pretty low, but it's even lower here and from what can be inferred before the events of the show. At this point in the show he has almost no consciousness of the scope of his powerlessness in this scenario, still believing his father is just tough but nonetheless acting in good faith. It's only later he comes to find out nothing is in good faith and it's all a big, weird, test and he's simply not equipped to succeed.
And his shit head siblings trying to screw him EVERY step of the way, except for maybe like two episodes.
This scene tells you just about everything you need to know about Kendall and Logan’s relationship
Man, Kendall is so different compared from season 1 to season 2. He had so much life in his eyes, and now he is just a killer by season 2.
Now he's the ultimate sad boy.
He gets back his groove in season 3, until he starts losing grasp
yeah, he's full of energy, but now, at the end of season 3 he's almost like a zombie, he changed so much
@@chscelebrity8325 you think he is dead?
Literally a killer
Now THIS is an entry for perhaps the best character on the show. Shows his confidence and also maybe hints at his vulnerabilities.
Yeah, shows what you said, and his out of touch nature. I love the guy, I hope he wins, but he is an absolute tool.
Logan is the best character lol

I gotta agree with Logan here. If someone plainly insults you and your family in view of 20 people and your response is to try and "be the bigger man" and desperately close the deal, then you're not worthy to lead.
Rewatching this to remind me of why the Vaulter s2 episode is sooo satisfying
Exactly. Fuckin dickhead Lawrence was. I wish his people getting axed could have seen a recording of this 🤣 Kendall put him in his place. "find yourself another chicken coop, cu**"
It is not, though. Lawrence is proven right. He was trying to chase them away but tragically couldn't. His antagonistic behaviour didn't work in the end, so he couldn't save his company and his people despite his best efforts.
The line Kendall says to Lawrence in 2.2 is just a small way to make himself happy, but that scene only proves at that point both men had lost their respective games.
@@LlamaDuck2211he could have kept his company if he hadn’t sided with Logan. Kendall really did try his best for Vaulter but Lawrence constantly shit on him and betrayed him.
Who knew how much significance that first car drive scene would have for the whole series
How is it significant
@@junesuprise my interpretation is that Kendall hears the song in his headphones and sings along thinking he sounds cool but the driver only hears Kendall badly singing along showing how out of touch he is

I think Don jr has more acumen and more respect

wonder how bobby axelrod would have handled that
*There’s a reason why a real life version of Bobby Axelrod does NOT exist. Billions is a retarded show for retarded people. There was an episode where Bobby Axelrod was reflecting and bragging about his early days betting on obscure penny stock companies that nobody’s heard of…how he saw random penny stock companies even though nobody ever sees penny stock companies other than the people in the company. The scene was so cringeworthy. I stopped watching after. Real savvy investors do not do this. They only get involved in penny stock companies if they have some inside information where they can’t get caught for it. To tell me Bobby Axelrod just happened to identify the couple of penny stock companies among millions…that mooned is ludicrous. Again, nobody can see these things in its infant days unless they’re involved with the company. The scene was designed to make Bobby Axelrod look like some genius, that he has some magical ability that nobody else has. Bullshit, it’s just terrible script and fictional writing to kiss Bobby Axelrod’s ass.
he would have said fuck you and ruin this guys company
He'd have done his homework and not even showed up if there was no play
Or found some blackmail on him 😃
Succession is comedic gold.

I dont like how the character of Lawrence was written. For a founder of one of the most influential internet companies in the world, he seems too immature and flamboyant. In reality any businessmen in his position are cold, calculating, most importantly lowkey. They keep their thoughts to themselves and screw other people over before they even realise what happened, whereas he just tells his plans to his enemies...
Thats my only criticism of this show actually, these characters arent actually those youre really gonna find in wall street or in corporate america. The only character that truly resemble was Logan which can be an mix of murdoch and trump
Nick denton is really like that though

can't tell me the father/son dynamic wasn't modeled after Don and Don Jr.
In this moment a future season 4 Kendall Roy would get up in Vaulter CEO's face and tell them they're going to run them into the ground and their employees are going to be beginning for jobs and they're going to comeback to suck on the teet of Waystar-Royco begging for handout. As we later see Logan never wanted this company when he told Kendall to layoff the people. This was supposed to be a learning lesson for Kendall, and he failed. Thus started the Succession crisis, that eventually leads to Kendall being the sole CEO.
Idk if this is a dumb question, but can anyone explain the strange dialogue between Kendall and Lawrence?
They use alot of metaphors, I'm guessing that's what you're asking about. Lawrence is pretty much saying the company is old news, led by "dinosaurs", which are old rich men with old school views and methods, who don't see the world changing in front of them. Words are rarely ever literal in this show, and interpersonally with the main characters they're usually used as tools of manipulation and a way to expose weakness.

That Vaulter guy is straight bozo. Uh uh uh okay, dude. Ssssssure uhh dude. We’re uh the shizz? That whole little act of pretending to be small and awkward, and then being cold to Kendall was psychotic. What a freaking weird little man. It was awesome seeing Kendall gut Vaulter in season 2 and the dude starts whimpering. Also Logan was an incompetent A hole who was successful because of his talented friends, family, and team. His talent was way overrated. Kendall on the other hand had real talent and grit, yes it’s true he was flawed but he showed real heart and when things were down or going bad he would flip out at first but then regroup and come back strong. He had a knack for being a leader and rallying the troops. His life was poisoned by Logan who convinced everyone around him that Kendal couldn’t hack it. He even convinced the siblings that they themselves and Kendal couldn’t be successful. I think Logan did that because he saw great talent, compassion, and competence in his children. Those were things Logan was lacking, he had no real backup, just a lot of yes men.
I really believe this scene was Lawrence humbling this trust fund kid, Kendall. Kendall was so giddy that morning wanting to prove his dad that he can close a deal. Lawrence Yee has tremendous apathy and disgust for the Roy family and Waystar…how the company is like a predator always looking to force small companies to sell to them. Lawrence hates their insatiable greed and their culture. And nobody is a better example of the spoiled narcissistic brat than Kendall. I can bet Lawrence is a self made success who did all the coding/programming to building a successful site. He actually works for a living whereas Kendall is just handed CEO despite having no credentials or experience. Even though at this moment, Lawrence certainly planned on selling his company to Waystar…he just didn’t want to give Kendall the benefit or delight of closing a business deal because he just doesn’t respect Kendall remotely. After Lawrence got his money, he continued to operate the company but running it into the ground to spite the family he hates. Thought that was kinda trashy but I know we all hate corporations… just like nobody cares when shoplifting happens at Walmart because the Walton kids are each worth tens of billions. Lawrence is of course also gay which is important because ATN is a homophobic Fox News equivalent. So Lawrence couldn’t hate the company and Roy family any bit more. Meanwhile, Kendall is just so damn delusional and stupid.
I dont think he purposely ran it into the ground, i think he sold them bullshit. It was a bullshit site. Lawrence was way too prideful himself and ultimately got shit on by the roys.
Kendall x Lawrence have the best sexual chemistry of anyone on the show lol. I ship em
this is so bizarre, the only way i can see them is like a crack ship, no sexual tension whatsoever they clearly hated each other's guts
