How Speed Limiters Will RUIN Cars... (And Motorcycles)

  • Welcome to our video discussing the recent new law where all new cars sold musty be fitted with a speed limiter. Politicians have already stated that motorcycles will also have mandatory speed limiter fitted to them when the technology allows for it. In an aim to improve road safety, have governments just killed the car industry? It looks likely. Let me know what you think in the comments.

    In the uk the most common reasons for crashes is distractions. Yet so many new cars have virtual cockpits, heads up displays, etc. Why dont they try to stop this. Some new cars like VWs and teslas have headlight controls on screens or in the infortainment system.

    If this system is using GPS to know which road the car is on and the speed limit of the road, it will cause huge crashes around motorway junctions. While driving along the motorway, I have seen my GPS speed limit on google maps change to either the offramp speed limit (50-40mph) or the road passing underneath the motorway (50-30mph), If this happens with a speed limiter, it would try to slow down the car while still on a 70mph motorway.

  • @splukker
    @splukker Před měsícem +2

    Approach a pothole at 30mph. It is unavoidable. If you brake hard you may lose control in the gravel thrown up out of the hole. If you are unable to blip the throttle to lighten the front wheel , you are possibly slamming into the hole and flying through the air to land hard ,head first or into an oncoming vehicle.
    To corner safely around a corner requires for acceleration on the exit from the corner to lift the bike upright.

  • @bally632
    @bally632 Před měsícem +3

    Even though it is coming to the uk you will be able to override the system by pressing your throttle, which after a few seconds will cancel the warnings etc until you switch it off. When you start the engine again it will have reset back to giving out speed warnings and you'll have to do the same again! Not a big deal really, just slightly annoying 🤬

    I got my first bike a month ago. 2024 Husqvarna Svartpilen 125. It's a nice bike with lots of tech features. One of which is the speed limiter that lets you set a maximum speed limit for the bike while you are learning which makes some sense, but I ended up turning it off completely after the second week as I didn't need it. The bike also has turn by turn navigation but that is controlled through the phone which is paired to it. I would imagine eventually it will get built in as standard as a convenience feature at first, then it will get linked up to the speed limiter to automatically control the bikes speed depending on the road you are on.
    A system using cameras wouldn't be reliable enough, as signs can be obscured by trees and bushes as it is, or dirt and bugs on the camera etc.
    I'm thinking my next bike will be an air/oil cooled Royal Enfield with no tech at all lol.

These devices will save tens of thousands of lives globally every year. As far as I can see, the only reason anyone can have for NOT liking these devices is because they regularly break the speed limit. People like myself who drive according to the law will not notice any change. In fact, it will assist them in driving safely. The next steps I would like to see are mandatory front and back dashcams, automated minimum distance managers and your car automatically informing the police and your insurance company when you break the law. Excessive speed is one of the major factors in the vast majority of accidents. If you had been driving the way you were taught to, these devices would be unnecessary. You are the architects of your own misery.

So why do I have to now be punished if I want a new car? so they think controlling speed will stop crashes?? stupid idea, both my crashes have been from people being distracted and loosing control of their vehicles. First guy was not driving appropriately for road conditions, didnt see my coming down the single lane country road which I had pulled over and slowed ( i was goin 50-60 prior to seeing him and managed to get to either 5mph or stopped before the collision, so speed wasnt the concern) and the other driver rear ended my car at 30mph (the speed limit) cuz I'm going to assume he was on his phone or distracted by smth so he didnt slow at all untill he used my car as a stopping point.
    so if these collions were both with new vehicles with speed limiters, both these crashes would have still happend?? someone tell me if im yapping and salty or if im onto smth here cuz I really don't see how they can think this works. Lets make the Ipads in cars illegal and not penalize people for speeding within 10%+2 like the rule is normally. If I have to be checking my speed 24/7 im going to be taking my eyes off the road which could lead to me missing someone breaking at 70mph on the motorway. cuz I looked away for 2 seconds every 5 seconds.

Even if it “waits” till your upright to slow you it will slow you more from a potential higher speed. It’s maybe a symptom of this 15 minute city project. It's not to make the limiter automatically pick up signposted speeds etc. Limiters are pushed heavily during speed awareness classes to avoid "accidental" speed creeping over. The government think if this feature is available on all cars produced after the date of the bill (no retrofitting) then it will reduce speeding and those caught speeding with the feature can have the book thrown at them.

    This video is a bit off putting. It's already in effect in europe, but they cannot possibly make it so it cuts your power after X limit. The way it works is that it makes annoying sounds, for safety alone they cannot cut your engine power. As for bikes, well bikes do not have the technology to read the roda signs and adjust their speed, with the exception of Goldwings some high end BMWs and HDs. For bikes it will most likely have a power cutoff which can be ECU removed with 50 euros to any garage. Here in Czechia for example Honda and Kawasaki remove the restrictions if you have an A category license.

    With Brexit we went from being part of the biggest trading block in the world to living next door to it. Even if you don't like the EU you're still better off in it than out of it, a concept the brexiteers failed to grasp. The issue in point, we would have had a veto to stop compulsory speed limiters for example. The fact that the UK is in favour of them so wouldn't have vetoed them is beside the point. The same will be the case for everything else the EU does, we have lost our seat at the table so instead of 'taking back control', we have totally lost it.

    i think the video itself is well rounded however, the fact when you complain about speedlimits and being upset about the repercussions of breaking the speed limit in limited zones baffles me? If you're over the limit then you're over the limit even if it's 2mph or 10. you're knowingly going over it and you're taking the risk of that.
    I'm not saying people don't and shouldn't speed but you can't complain about it if you get yourself an SP30 or an SP50 for either road or motorway speeds. Is it just speed where you draw the line or is it okay to also be slightly over the drink limit or drug driving?
    The roads themselves are limited in towns and cities where footpaths and traffic could cause injury or damage should you not be able to stop fast enough or roadside hazard such as parked cars, T juctions, driveways and the sorts.
    I'm not bashing the video but this part particually irked me - good video overall though

    There is another problem with these tactics that are dumbing down the act of driving makes drivers distracted. Because you don't have to keep an eye on speed and you're going slow the drive is not engaging. This makes the drivers attention wonder and ultimately will make the drivers more dangerous not safer.

    • @langhamp8912
      @langhamp8912 Před měsícem +2

      If you want to make the driver engaged, then remove things like red lights, stop signs, road markings, pedestrian crossings, and anything else that allows you to turn off your brain. Then throw in the occasional obstacle like a couch or a potted plant in the middle of the road, along with concrete barriers and bollards that will destroy your car if your mind wanders.
      Drivers are dangerous because they want to go just fast enough to still be safe. So, remove everything that makes drivers feel safe. For instance, remove all airbags and safety devices, crumple zones, ABS, and so on. I'd bet then drivers would concentrate a bit more than they do now.

      @@langhamp8912 I have a simpler idea, remove insurance!! people drive like freaks cuz they know if they crash into you they can just lie get a 50/50 claim and things will be ripe as rain for them again. @@MrDylanButton People with insurance are less likely to be in a wreck than those without insurance. There's an avalanche of evidence showing so, but the reason why is postulated as people who don't have much concern for others and themselves will drive without much care.
      What I think would work better in reducing wrecks is to simply remove all safety features from cars, and place a spike in the center of the steering wheel pointed directly at the driver's heart. A collision with anything would then drive the spike through the driver. Thus, drivers would (usually) drive with the utmost care, while those who didn't would be quickly eliminated from driving.

    Just because you can't save everyone doesn't mean it's not a good idea to have safety measures in place to save a good amount of people. seat belts dont save everyone but they are still a good idea. you can die in a motorcycle crash while wearing a helmet, doesn't mean you shouldn't wear one. You say when you enter your car or get on your bike you're accepting risk, sure but why can't we bring that risk down? Also, someone just trying to get to work shouldn't have to accept the same risk as a shitty bmw driver speeding and overtaking on corners. look at 90% of car crash videos and it involves someone crashing or hitting or killing another person. You're not the only person on the road or street. if you want to take that risk for your self go to a track. The reason 30 is 30 is because of the way the road and street are designed. a motorway and a residential street are completely different roads. driving fast is cool but it's not a right.
