  • Bringing up the young of species which rely less on instinct and more on intelligence is difficult, as if the parent is unable to teach key skills, the young don't learn key survival strategies. So primates may not learn to bring up young, predators may not learn what to eat and prey species may not learn what to flee from. Today these animals have in many cases to be raised by humans, but this risks teaching the young that humans are a source of food and protection. Using sophisticated robotic 'animatronic' parents, predators and prey, would if they looked, smelt and behaved like real animals avoid the young animal becoming dependant on humans for their existence. Therefore on Earth this could be used where the parent animal was unable to teach the required skill, and on a planet undergoing terraforming whole ecosystems could be constructed of animatronic robotics so as to train young animals how to become part of a real ecosystem.
The ultimate aim would be to eventually remove all the robotics, but only when the real animals had become part of a real ecosystem and no further training was necessary.
