Do not choose things that are heavily dyed or painted, which could have strong chemicals or could be ingested. Do not choose things that your birds could get wrapped up in or could wrap around their limbs. Do not choose things that are sharp, which could cut or seriously injure your bird. Foraging Bucket - metal bucket (found at hobby lobby), crinkle paper, Chinese finger traps, leather twists, popsicle sticks, foot toys, plastic beads, wooden beads/rings, natural cork, “birdie bagels”, mahogany slices, foraging cube tied to one end, foraging sack tied to the other end
Foraging Tray - plastic tray (found at target), crinkle paper, Chinese finger traps, leather twists, foot toys, plastic beads, wooden beads/rings, natural cork, “birdie bagels”, mahogany slices
Foraging Ball - random woven cat toy (found at petsmart), crinkle paper, Chinese finger traps, paper boing

I have 4 budgies and I make ALL of their toys for 3 reasons
1. Bird toys are so expensive
2. They don’t like store bought toys
3. Bird toys are very easy to make
To make their toys I use
• Manila paper
• construction paper
• corn husks
• cardboard (with the ink taken away)
• old shoe laces
They really like the toys I make for them better than the ones from the store

Jorge Canales I have a few rescued birds and my beautiful macaw chick..I nearly had heart failure at the cost of toys..I set up a webstore and am planning to under cut all the bird toy companies...and supply endless discounts on different yt channels ie parrot channels like Marlene Mc Cohan and bird tricks.......lots of savings and the wonder will go to parrot rescue...I’ll come back with discount codes

Truly loving birds and recognizing their needs. You are one of those special people who rescued a bird. Takes a special dedicated person such as yourself to do so. You never know what issues a rescue bird will have or what environment they came from. So much more challenging so kudos to you. This is great info and tips on diy toys. My question is how do you know your colored paper you use to stuff the diy toys is safe? How do you know if theyre using safe dyes? Just making sure as those items are easily found in dollar stores.
I have a Parrotlet, a cockatiel, a sun conure, a blue crowned conure, and a Rose breasted cockatoo, and their toys can get so expensive!! I spent over $200 on a bunch of toys, and they were all gone in a month so I need some foraging toys I can make!
This video was so amazing. I really appreciate your time and effort in getting parrot mom's and dad's the info they need to have a healthy and happy bird. Keep up the good work! I am definitely subscribing!

I have a crazy question!! I am always worried about the items I put in the foraging ( is the shredded paper is non-toxic for example)How do you know the paper and toys are non-toxic? I appreciate the video!!
marylynn brennan I choose paper and toys that would also be safe for human infants! I just make sure that the toys are appropriate sized and I watch to make sure that the bird isn’t eating the paper, but is just playing with it!

How do I know if the paper I buy is made with bird-safe ink? Alternatively, is there a way I can dye it myself?
ethereal ••• explorations the risk of ink/dye toxicity is extremely low these days, especially when it comes to paper products. Things like tissue paper, newspaper, crinkle paper (as shown here), etc are all created using non-toxic dyes. But if you’re uncomfortable using them, you can use koolaid, without the sugar of course!

Goldi Paul thank you for the compliment! I’m so sorry to hear about both of your birds. Unfortunately, I no longer have my bird, so I cannot do a video on what to do if your bird is depressed. I suggest doing further research and making sure your budgie has a great diet and great enrichment. I also know that budgies are very social birds and don’t always do well when kept alone. Good luck!!

I gave him a paper towel and he just chewed it up for a few minutes! It made me smile to see that he was having fun! Now I’m going to make a more advanced toy!
Jinxed love that! You can take that paper towel and make little knots along it so it takes them longer to rip it up, or wrap a treat with paper towel so they have to work to get it out!
Yeah I put a little millet and then rolled it into a ball so he would have to chew it to get some millet, I also gave him a thin piece of card board and let him chew on it, he wasn’t super interested into it but kept him occupied for a couple minuets

Margaret Ellen just keep an eye on your bird when using it. If your bird is actually eating the paper, stop using it ASAP. But if they’re just shredding it and playing with it, it’s fine :)
