  • A digital rectal examination (DRE) is a medical procedure in which a healthcare professional inserts a lubricated, gloved finger into the rectum. This examination is used to assess the lower rectum, pelvis, or abdomen for abnormalities. The healthcare provider can feel parts of the lower digestive system and other nearby organs, including the prostate gland in men and, less commonly, the cervix in women.
DREs are used for several purposes, including screening for colorectal cancer, evaluating symptoms such as blood in the stool, pain, and changes in bowel habits, and checking the health of the prostate in men. It can help detect abnormalities that might require further testing or intervention, but it's not a comprehensive diagnostic tool on its own.
