    After beating Arsenal, Swindon were stopped from playing in the Fairs cup (Cup winners cup) the following season because we were a 3rd division side and were replaced by Arsenal who I think went on to win it. Nice to see the money men were at it even then. As consolation Town were given the "huge honour" of playing in the Anglo-Italian cup which they of course won. The Football League have had a Hate/Hate relationship with Swindon ever since as was seen in 1990/91 when Town were demoted 2 divisions from the Premier League for the same offence that Tottenham received a £60000 fine for.
    Don Rogers attends every Swindon home match with his mate John Trollope who played at LB in the 69 final. Arsenal of course whinged non stop about the state of the pitch so it was a match winning decision for Swindon to only play on parts of the pitch where a blade of grass was present 🤔🤔🤔

      Tbf that’s not totally true. Arsenal qualified through being 4th in division 1. 2 sides qualified through the league (2nd & 3rd, but obv Liverpool & Everton couldn’t both qualify). It was actually Southampton that were handed Swindon’s League Cup place. The fact that Arsenal qualified for the Fairs Cup and were also LC runners up was a complete coincidence. But I totally agree, farcical that the LC Winner disqualified for not being in division 1.

      Fairs Cup wasn't Cup Winners Cup.
      At the time, Fairs Cup was a 3rd competition in Europe after European Cup & Cup winners Cup (which is already been introduced in 1960). Fairs cup was a precursor to UEFA Cup
      Well technically, if we compared them to today, it were basically;
      European Cup = Champions League
      Cup Winners Cup = Europa League
      Inter-Cities Fairs Cup = UEFA Cup = Conference League

      @@ytanonymity3585 thank you for explaining to me that the fairs cup wasn’t the CWC. Cos I really needed that pointing out to me. Obv the one wasn’t the other. One was a real comp, the other a plate comp.

    Swindon basically invented "Park The Bus" system with their 7-2-1 and sometime 9-1-0 formation in this cup competition lol

      Swindon are usually one of the very few sides that actually try and pass it around (sometimes too much). In the lower leagues

    bit of similarity to 1970 Scottish cup final ; Aberdeen V Celtic (okay not 3 divs apart) but score the same - and the 3rd goal by Don Rogers had me thinking of Derek McKays 3rd goal ; and the arms outstretched in same manner
