Sir writing is a noble art of self sacrifice, it's painful because every Idea while maturation demands a suffering or pain price but sometimes you feel flying in air while writing because of the quality of an idea. Never think about money otherwise Ideas will never wellcome you. It's a mystical process even if you are writing a scientific book. You have to wait and sacrifice your own life and then while you are living in that world of wonders where exact relevant Ideas are waiting for you . Regards.

Robert is so right about writing being boring, I have worked full time as a medical writer, spending entire days just trying to write something good enough for my boss to say ok, but I couldn't have asked for a better job, I'd spent the entire day reading, writing, and editing alone in my room - I can see myself doing it till I die

It sounds like writing offers you much satisfaction and solitude. In spite of doing technical writing, you love your job because it involves reading, writing and editing etc.
      So is it really boring?
I’m more of a visual artist myself, and the reason I do it is that I love the process of getting it down carefully, executing it carefully and editing it carefully with refinements.
I enjoy my writing for similar reasons. And I’m so stimulated and excited about both hobbies when I’m inspired.

  • @pharaohcaesar
    @pharaohcaesar Před 2 měsíci +1

I started writing my memoirs some time back. And of course there are different sections of my life. So I started writing about my childhood which I found interesting and the words just flowed out of me because that time of my life was very hopeful. But then I went into a more tragic part of my life and I couldn't continue. I hadn't realized how much emotion I still carried about that part of my life. I don't like to dwell on negatives in life because I find it counterproductive to success. So when I even thought about writing that section I stopped. I thought about skipping to the more hopeful sections of my life but the tragic parts are relevant to the hopeful parts and so on and I just stopped because I realized I was caring around a lot of emotions that I had not dealt with and I knew writing those things wasn't going to be pretty and that I would need to be alone when doing that. Being a Dad of young daughters doesn't allow for alone time so I realized it was impossible to continue. So I totally agree that you have to have a great deal of alone time to be able to write properly.
I have some fiction stories I want to write. I like to write them in my head first. What helps me is knowing the start and the end of the story and than filling in the middle. I noticed that I'm not good at trying to come up with an ending. I've stopped writing stories that started off very interesting but just stopped because I didn't know the end.
I agree with you about the quality of books these days. It's a wonder to me how such low quality stories are even published. But I think reading is a great way to think about writing. If you want to be a good writer you need to be a good reader. And read things thinking about how the stories are written and in what style and how you would write those books if you wrote them. In any case, I've decided to self publish.
I've also decided not to try and become famous by writing books as many successful writers do. Instead I've decided the easiest way to sell books is to first become famous and than write the books.
When I was a kid I decided I wanted to be a writer and I thought about the business of writing books. I'm also a painter so I thought about how to sell art. And it just seems to me that in both cases becoming famous is the easiest way to sell things you make. So you turn yourself into a product. So that's what I've been doing. I've been seeking fame or rather working on becoming famous. I'm also doing my best to live an interesting life. I live as if I'm writing my memoirs with my life. To me, the mark of a successful life is to be remembered so I've made choices in life that led me down pathways that I thought would be the most memorable and interesting for my memoirs. I've also picked up book and movie ideas along the way that I've put on the shelf for the appropriate time.
I guess what I'm saying is that writing for me is a way of life. It's not just about writing books or making up stories. It's about living an interesting life. My goal is to sell more books than anyone in history second only to the Bible. I know that's a big goal but that's what I'm striving for. You know, shoot for the stars and maybe you'll hit the moon sort of thing.
Anyway, I really like the way you write and I've used some of your ideas in my own life to try and live a more interesting life and they worked out. Your advice in this video is very good and I agree. Thanks!😀

    Hi Dr. Greene,
What a great and encouraging video. Thank you for all the work you do for us. You have truly changed my life, how I think and live.
When I watch your videos and read your words, I often think of how lucky I am to be alive at the same time as such an incredible thinker/public figure.
One thing about this video I would love to discuss is that writing is boring. In my experience, any creative endeavor that one chooses to pursue should be motivated by the genuine desire/need to express that creativity. Regardless of medium. It is that desire that is the gift, and when one truly surrenders to the process of getting that creativity expressed…as perfect as they can get it - it’s super fun and oooooh so satisfying.
My main passion is art. But I love to write for fun. Thank you for the video, the insights can be applied to many creative pursuits.
Hope some folks chime in with some thoughts and opinions ✨

Reading flat, underdeveloped and uninteresting writing, on the other hand, is the perfect cure for insomnia. So, if I feel that way about my own writing then it’s probably because I’m writing for the wrong reasons or pursuing an idea that doesn’t have the legs. But, like this video accounts, that gets taken care of in the planning and structural phase of my writing ✍️

I don't know a lot, but I know that I'm a talented writer with an idea that's been resonating with me for years now. It's a crappy feeling to have an idea resonate with yourself and be too stubborn and too nervous to put it on paper to see how it looks. Hi Robert! I got your book, 48 laws of power, in 2006 at a book sale. It was tattered and unloved, and it was cheap ($2). You weren’t as famous then, and I was shockingly surprised, after reading that book, why you weren’t because that book was well written and a gem.
I was at the lowest point of my life when I found it and was questioning why people were being so mean and cruel to me. Your book showed me the reality of life, how most of us are obsessed with power, whether it’s teachers or bullies. It helped me accept reality, helped me move on. I also loved how you told stories based on these principles, and for the first time, made me interested in history.
I just want to let you know that your writings have an effect and influence. I still have that book with me, plastic covered. I hope someday I could meet you and have you sign it in person.

A tattered book might mean it was read a lot, not that it wasn't famous. The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene has been popular for years. He's been famous even before 2006. Many people have read and loved it, which could explain why some copies look well-worn.

@@mikesmith1678 You’re right! It wasn’t as tattered, just the cover, but the pages were almost good as new. Just looked like it was a throwaway book that can’t be sold at brand new price. And I might be ignorant to not know he was famous during the 90s; but surely wasn’t as a famous name during that time in a 3rd world country like mine (where I bought the book); that’s what I meant by not famous.
      But thanks for clarifying!

You mentioned how books in recent times take us through a revolving door by mentioning the same thing over and over again. It's quite funny that you say this because I had recently been thinking/discussing with friends about the loss of good story-telling. We have lost that significant part of ourselves, the sitting around a campfire under the stars telling stories with hidden gems of wisdom that keep others engrossed.

I found it interesting to hear how you talk about it almost like it is a game, like you have to have given set of skills and go about it in a certain way. You talk about it in a technical, almost mechanistic way as if the craft itself wasn't complete subjective as to me it appeared to be up until now.
I sometimes write for fun. I write novels, or fragments of them. But I always write of what I want to write, so it is never boring to me. That said, I have no intention of publishing or finishing a book in the foreseeable future. I can see how this becomes a very different dynamic when this is your career, when you expect to make a living for you, and perhaps, your family from it. When there is a pressure to perform commercially I can image a growing concern is: "is this book going to perform well?", and that changes everything.
This was interesting, please consider making more of these. Maybe show us around, show us your office, your desk. Let us in!

Hardest part is recognizing that what you have to offer in life experiences or mental ideas are not good enough or interesting enough to make it the central idea of a book. We all want to say something to the world, to make it a better place and to improve the lives of other people, but there are only a chosen few who have the gift or the experience to offer us something unique. And Robert you are lucky in the sense that you did go thru a lot in your life and that you identified the Zeitgeist of our times and what we are needing now. thanks

Wrong. You don't want to try, you are so afraid of failure, you'd rather do nothing and tell yourself you were never dated for writing.

I think writing is fun. I've got some kids books and short stories in the oven right now. I just procrastinate with mine during the week because of work, the rest of my time will just disappear if I'm writing having too much fun writing. But it does get tough sometimes for sure.

Writing does no have to be boring. It took Self-Relativity 7 years and 720 pages and every moment was fun, rewarding, and fulfilling. Not just writing, but anything that is fulfilling can be rewarding and fun; hence "Theory of Self-Relativity" states:
"Wealth, fame and power are simply byproducts of success; true success is measured by the level of your fulfillment."

I really love your work. I have a question about books and writing habits. Usually, after some time, I realize I could create a better program or system, or write a better article. I presume that indicates self-learning, self-improvement, and so on. As Nietzsche said: 'I am that which must always overcome itself.' My question is, if we were in 1995, do you think you could write a better book than 'Power' (or other books), or explain some concepts more deeply? Thank you.
