  • In this Vlog we leave Stratford upon Avon and head north on the South Stratford canal. This is a narrow canal and it is proving to be slightly narrower than most as we get stuck in quite a few of the locks!

    I don´t remember that David had problems with the gates but he had big troubles with the bridge out from the basin and the height.

    At Maccie D's, you would not have been then, but would be now (it has recently opened), a short walk from one of the biggest Lidl's in the UK, which has a big bakery. Just before the Asda Living, but on the other side of the road. Which is next door to Pets at Home and Vets 4 Pets (also in a new location). The Aldi is another one hundred yards down, opposite Tesco. At the Red House, you would have been a short walk from my house. And, yes, the ANT is working to extend the locks up to Warwick. Maybe even join the Grand Union between the Tesco and Lidl.

      We should have waited for that Lidl! M

    We got stuck in locks further up the Stratford canal, but we had no problems with the lower ones. Thanks for the vlog!

    Michael, I suspect by your hospitality to the tourists, may well be part of the Reason The CRT recommends your site, [;us you manage to acquire the Silver Propellor Award. Because of your example of lock courtesy and demeanour on the canals plus your on screen personalities is very hard to beat.

    Your right some of the headroom is very low, like having to remove you stove Chimney and Michael has to duck, perhaps a helmet might be in order. I really hate getting clobbered in the head.

  • @richardclark148
    @richardclark148 Před 5 lety +2

    And George supervised the whole trip...some of those bridges were ridiculously low I assume built when the canal was not in use and designed for walkers. You've got a proper George sized shower tub for his baths which is handy ...But then you have eau de damp dog all evening to enjoy.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  Před 5 lety

      Yes that canal was extremely derelict, and it was only the entreaties of enthusiasts that kept them from simply filling in a section. Since no one really considered that the canals would reopen some were built far too low for comfort. M

    Last stage operation George , two people clean dog in bath tube (tight fit ) . George survived but lost the oh so beloved dog aroma. But on the bright side he will regain it next time so operation George will commence next puddle , swim or rain storm . Busy day gang , keep vlogging and happy cruising .

    Love the video guys ! We got stuck in Somerton Deep lock and Grants lock on the South Oxford...both on the way down and on the way back ...because the gates wouldn’t fully open. Only option was to literally barge through as you did, leaving a nasty scrape down the gunwhales....I hope you didn’t leave too much of your blacking behind...! Really enjoying watching your trips...🍷🍷

    You both look tired today. If you think that's a busy Bancroft, come back in the Summer. I used to dress up as a Butterfly in Stratford to advertise the Butterfly Farm and had 100's of photos a day with Japanise tourists. I do wonder how often someone in Japan looks through a photo album and thinks "who is this strange giant butterfly with their arm around my mum!"

    Another lovely video, you hit on what would be one of my two biggest fears, getting stuck in a lock and I have seen video's of people really stuck in a lock (I don't remember the cause, leaving bumpers out comes to mind and jamming up good) the 2nd does not apply to these they didn't seem to bad but what I think are referred to as "deep locks" there would be no way I could do 15 or 20 rungs on one of those ladders, so if they weren't crewed I would be stuck, I don't do heights very well :)
    A quick suggestion (NOT a criticism) could you post a popup or something in the beginning of the video when it is from, I noticed on this one you mentioned mid November, I had to go back and check to make sure I was not mistaken, the only reason I mention this is there is a tendency to think the recorded date is within a few days one way or the other of the published date.
    All the Best
    Bill

      @MinimalList  Před 5 lety

      I don't mind the deep, but I do hate the idea of climbing out of the deep! Ugh. Don't think I've ever had much time in life I didn't hate heights.
      As for the callout, not a bad idea and I'll mention it to Jo. We'll be much more close to real time by Christmas, so there won't be as much of a gap. M

  • @320ifq
    @320ifq Před 5 lety +1

    Before the ladders were fitted I thought it was good Health and safety practice to leave a bottom gate open in case a person fell in, dogs or other animals may appreciate a bottom gate being left open.
    Also when going up we used to nudge against the top gate and leave the boat in forwards at tick over so ropes were not needed. Is that banned now?

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  Před 5 lety

      The narrow locks on the Oxford and Stratford all have metal riser plates on the gates that allow you to push forward while going up, once you're above the cill, but it's still not exactly recommended practice anymore as it damages the gates and puts a lot of force on the collars and stone, but also there's a real risk of catching up at the front, especially on gates where the plate is absent or worn. Ropes are better all around, when there's bollards, but definitely more work. M

  • @rickf5615
    @rickf5615 Před 5 lety +1

    I would love to have seen some pictures of Michael and the tourist on the boat considering his size and what I am guessing was their very small stature. I bet it was almost comical. I am curious, what is the draft of a narrowboat? I see yours and others going through what appears to be very, very shallow water and kicking up mud. I always dreaded hitting bottom since that always meant prop damage to an expensive prop.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  Před 5 lety

      I stood back and let them take the photos, but yes the size difference was funny. One time in Vietnam I was crammed on a ferry with 2-300 people all standing, and not one of them rose above my sternum. It was like being a mountain peak looking down at just clouds.
      As for the draft, typically between 2 and 3.5 feet, with the extremes of that being relatively rare. They're very shallow and flat, and you tend to feel the front hitting before anything nears the prop. M
