The creative partnership between Tiga & Hudson Mohawke expresses a mutual love of “hardcore romance,” a liminal state where the bounds between euphoria, melancholy and the raw power of friendship disintegrate completely. Recorded in Los Angeles from 2019-2023, these commonalities ebbed and flowed through various recording sessions, culminating in their debut album - L’Ecstacy.
The sounds of L’Ecstacy “all come from the same place, the same musical universe,” says Hudson Mohawke. “We’re building a particular kind of zone where it all fits together. A place lost in time.”
“I like the idea of bizarre semi-random things getting thrown together. In fact, I love it,” Tiga explains. “That's already part of how me and HudMo work. I bring things and he brings things, and those things normally might not mix. There’s an odd-couple aspect about us, but that’s the best part of it.”
Originally conceived as a hardcore rave project focusing on bleary-eyed 6am catharsis, the breadth of the project expanded to encompass their shared love of the music surrounding the 90s rave biome, with chill-out quasi-IDM ambient - “Exit Warehouse at Dawn,” “LMZNIN” - creating space for the album’s tentpole anthems - “IN ORDER 2,” “VSOD,” “Ascending into the Clouds” - to breathe. “HudMo was the first person I saw outside my family and my lizard dealer during lockdown. The album documents a period when big dance tracks were heavily de-emphasized and then re-emphasized. We never stopped working on new music,” says Tiga, who plans to change his legal name to Tiga Mohawke to celebrate the album’s release.
Featuring guest appearances by luminaries like Abra, Channel Tres, and Jesse Boykins III, as well as album artwork by Turner Prize-winning photographer Wolfgang Tillmans, the result is delivered with “no apology, no cynicism, no irony, no winking,” as Tiga says - just two friends churning out the kind of music they want to hear, want each other to hear, and hope to hear you wanting to hear too.
