2 Avalanche high-performance cores. 4 Blizzard high-efficiency cores. Up to 5 Graphics Cores. 16 Neural Engine Cores. Double the system cache to keep it all fed. But, increasingly, it’s the non-big compute core features that are the most interesting: New image signal processor, ISP, including Smart HDR4. New video encode and decode blocks, including hardware acceleration for ProRes 422 video. New display engine for up to 120Hz adaptive refresh. New always-on touch co-processor to adapt that refresh in real-time. All with the best battery life ever delivered on an iPhone… and maybe, just maybe, our first glimpse at what might be coming for M2 and the next generation of Apple Silicon Macs.
This is the A15 Bionic deep dive!

🔋 Have you gotten an iPhone 13 yet?
I have not but because I like a great picture I’m thinking of upgrading my 12 Pro to 13 Pro
What’s the point of this chip if it overheats in 5-15 minutes of heavy use? I don’t see why apple aims for just “peak performance” not “sustainable performance”
Don’t you agree apple should implement vapor cooling for maximum performance?
_I will not be getting the iPhone 13 _*_Absolutely not,_*_ I’m waiting for the _*_iPhone 14_*_ to come out, the _*_iPhone 14_*_ is going to be packed with some of the best technology; my brother works for _*_Texas instrument R&D_*_ team and they have been recruited by _*_Apple_*_ two weeks after the release of the 12 series for the iPhone 14_
_The new glass technology is going to be so much more advanced they won’t need a notch a punch hole for the cameras and speakers_
_The design of the _*_iPhone 14_*_ is going to be taken back to the _*_iPhone 5_*_ lineup series in remembrance of _*_Steve Jobs_*_ which was the last iPhone under him before he died, on the back of the iPhone will be Steve Jobs signature etched in chrome, The Apple logo on the back will also be made of chrome_
*_8K video_*_ recording resolution; DTS-HD Master Audio and _*_Dolby Atoms_*_ audio rendering, _*_High Resolution_*_ audio through Bluetooth, _*_18.2 megapixels_*_ on the pro series for the iPhone 14 and _*_18.8 megapixels_*_ for the _*_Pro Max;_*_ as far as zoom capabilities that I have no information on, There will be _*_Panavision_*_ settings for screen type recording including an _*_IMAX_*_ software selection capability. These new camera features was encouraged by _*_Zack Snyder_*_ short film he recorded in 2018 with an _*_iPhone 7 Plus._*
_In my opinion this new iPhone 14 is targeting movie directors, cinematographers and photographers_
*_8 gig RAM_*_ by Samsung, 1TB _*_3D NAND_*_ memory storage, as far as the processor I have no information on that sorry_
@@TacticalTrucker where did u get this information brother
Honestly I only want to know one thing only
Will the iPhone 14 pro max have any cooling system? My 12 pro max overheats way to often and gets extremely hot
That’s the main feature I look forward to
@@TacticalTrucker ay brother no response?
Wow, I've never seen Apple's iPhone and processors strategy being covered that deeply.
That video must've been countless hours of work. Props for that, Rene!
Took a long time, ngl! Thanks for watching! What would you like to see next?
@@ReneRitchie read write speeds between the different storage options on the 13 pro. Can’t find any info on that
@@ReneRitchie If you haven’t already covered it, I’d love to see you deep dive into Apple Airplay - what technologies does it use, how it uses those technologies and a breakdown of its limitations and future. Thanks Rene, love your work.
@@ReneRitchie M1/M1X deep-dive? When it is released.
Rene… you destroy these deep dives! I’m so appreciative of all your hard work! Thank you sir. 🙏🏼🖤👍🏼
Agreed! I saw the 20-min runtime and was hesitant. But, it was worth it.
I remember when Apple introduced the 64 bit CPU and everyone laugh a second time then gets caught with their collective pants down AGAIN. 😆
I remember all the Android fans said it was just a marketing gimmick. They had no clue how earth shattering the upgraded instruction set was.
I also remember when Apple fans said Specs did not matter when they did not have the specs to talk about. Now it is fashionable to talk about specs? Think about what android could achieve with a chip of this power. What is the point of these chips if you cannot even have interactive widgets. Lol!
@@PrasadTiruvalluri know what you mean and you’re right. But due to this Chip iPhones are able to have great battery life even with smaller batteries compared to the rest of the market. Plus photo software for great photos. And in 5 years this will still get updates and the newest iOS
@@PrasadTiruvalluri Bit of a misrepresentation. It was never that specs don’t matter at all, it’s that the number on the page was, and still is, only part of the story. It’s always been Apple’s integration of hardware and optimised software which has set them apart.
@@PrasadTiruvalluri I switched from android to apple after years just a few days ago. To the iPhone 13 to be exact. Why? Because my Oneplus 7T, yes it had flagship specs of its time and arguably better specs than apple however the optimisation apple has managed to achieve in regards to applications, stability and battery completely outweighs the abundance of features I had on an android.
How do you not have 1M subs yet? The content… The quality… The quality content. You’re 3 for 3.
This was an excellent example of how to hype what Apple has actually accomplished with its custom silicon. Great job, Rene!
My complaint here is that I can’t like this video more than once. The level of depth and efficacy in this video is astounding. Rene, you have done an exceptional job on this video! Gees!
The detail and thoroughness that you put into your work is a breath of fresh air in the tech space. Thank you for the quality content. 👍🏼
💯
I couldn’t agree more! His videos are always awesome and so, so informative!!
@@jamespotts8372 , Amen... dear gosh, what a thinker you are! LOL
Seeing this all laid out over the years really highlights how long this has been “in the works” which is just mind boggling.
Fantastic video as always Rene!!
How does this channel not already have 500K subscribers? As always, you knocked it out of the park. Thank you, Rene!
These are my absolute favorite videos from you super long and detailed.
This is the most in-depth and informative video about Apple Silicon! Rene you’ve truly outdone yourself!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Seeing all the chip additions over the years brings me back to when apple used the power PC line, and then code names like G3,G4,G5 and altivec on the Motorola and IBM chips. Those were RISC processors as well I believe, but no where near as advanced as the A series today
Yup, from RISC to CISC back to RISC on the Mac!
This was an excellent documentary film. Punchy rapid-fire colourful narration and no wasted words. Great analysis throughout.
The efficiency from the iPhone 12 to the 13 is quite noticeable and worth the upgrade. Thanks for the video.
Truly fantastic job Rene! Its' clear so much work went into this. Much appreciated.
So much great info I didn’t even know I wanted to know! Thanks Rene!
A deep-dive into the neural engine/ML accelerators would be interesting because it's a kind of enigmatic black box. Do programs have to be specifically written to take advantage of them or is the acceleration done automatically? How does the CPU know when to use them? How does it know what code is ML and what is not? How do you know if they're being used? (Particularly on M-series Macs.)
This is some serious research and knowledge right here. Don’t mistake this for a low key flex- this is Renes straight up Mr. Olympia flex few can compete with… and it’s impressive.
Found this guys channel today and God knows I love it😍 his the first ever chip reviewer that makes a very long and detailed explanation about apples chipsets.... which is wat I've been looking for
the amount of effort you must put into your videos is impressive. I learn so much from them
there was so much good content in this video, i need to play these at half speed next time lol
THIS is the nerdy Rene video I needed 🤩
The iPhone is 2-3 years ahead of any Android phone. This is why 5-7 year old iPhones are commonly still in use.
Apple is always a year ahead in there chip sets
ah yes same as apple said that m1 is better than Nvidia 3070-3080(which is not even close) and fell flat:DDD
@@aelfwynn94 depends on what category, the M1 is made with video processing in mind, therefore renders much faster than and at much lower temps, but it ain’t for gaming
Fantastic job! Starting off with Apple's transition to the A4 really underlined the impact that decision. Add in Apple's software improvements e.g. Grand Central Dispatch, re-writing the file system, etc. that let developers and users seamlessly take advantage of these advancements and it reveals very deep forethought on Apple's behalf. Thank you!
I greatly enjoyed the deep dive: very helpful. Blessings on your day!
One year later, this video is still a great resource. It's a great review of the entire history of Apple silicone.
Videos like this are why I'm a subscriber. Very nice job! Love the info and the enthusiasm. :)
I frickin LOVE deep dives like these!!! You make really technical information easily digestible by the common public and that is a talent - good work Rene!
Thanks so much, what other videos would you like to see?
@@ReneRitchie i'd love to see a video comparing the the 13 Pro Max against older models (like the X that I have) in day-to-day use in specific areas; like battery life, as well as weight/usability/pocketability :)
Hey Rene I found a game that really heats up the iPhone 13 pro max, it’s called modern warships. I put all the settings on ultra and the phone heated up but never slowed down so I am impressed
Great video, Rene. Thoroughly enjoyed this one.
You are the BEST! I'm not the most advance tech guy, but your ability to explain what's happen and what's doing it is EXCELLENT 🔥🔥🔥
Pretty cool to see arm chips running at or above 25 watts. Very powerful
Love these kind of videos well done mate.
This is absolute 🔥 !! Peak Rene. This is the kind of deep dive I love to get my geek on for.
This vid is fantastic. Detailed and easy to understand.
Rene - you are the bomb 💣! I do sometimes feel like everything you say goes by way too fast. Maybe consider slowing down your pace for those of us, that need a pause every now and then. Love your content as always! 👍🏼
Rene once again sets himself a part from all other Apple-focused content creators. Fantastic video!
This video is ridiculously awesome! Great job!
More like this. Absolutely great history and info.
Thank you! Awesome dissection!
Wow, one heck of a lot of super content. Thank you. Minor comment Rene. The subtitles. You mention 'Watt' but spell it 'What' and you mention 'Metal' but spelt it 'Mental' Thats my high efficiency core with pin razor sharp eye camera (lol). That for content was mental though.
Rene, thanks for Apple A15 explanation. Please do a similar video for M1X when it comes out!
Now we understand why apple charges so much for their phones, they don't just sell you present but they sell you the future. Thanks Rene😁.
Tell that to the slaves in China that build em for less than 50 a phone lol marketing wank is what they sell you
@@Heathmcdonald almost like companies don’t spend any money on development, only money on building new devices
Absolutely kickass content Rene! The way you take us through the video, I really feel more educated by the end of it. Would love to know more about the history of the S1 too!
Great flow. Lovely presentation
I love how you talk geek in a way that I can follow.
TYVM! This is quintessential RR content, which is a high complement.
Dudddeeee. Not a frequent commenter, but I don’t miss a video… this was next level depth. I’m gonna have to watch it again to fully digest some of this. LOVE this deep dive. Hell, you’ve redefined deep dive!
Thanks so much! What would you like to see next?
@@ReneRitchie I just appreciate all the time and energy that had to go into researching and writing all of this… and then delivering it in such a way that kept us hooked… while differentiating from all the other iPhone 13 / A15 content going up right now.
As for next topic: could be fun to explore evolution of photography with these devices, from the technical and hardware standpoint with lenses/sensors, to implications they’ve had on content creators and the industry, to perhaps why and how Apple prioritizes imaging so much more than other manufacturers, and your take on where it’ll all go next.
Love the detail of this video!
This is the best video I've watched on A15 so far! 😍
This is not a video … this is A series Apple Custom processor Information Bank. 🤩
You never fail to explain why geeks and Apple lovers follow you. Every video gives damn good information.
Keep up the good work sir. 👏
Not everyone can make this kinda video! Kudos Sir! 🙏🏼
This is a very well done video 👌🏻
Great video Rene.
Very informative video. thank you for making it
Finally a Great explanation and a Great video! 👏
Great video, I really enjoyed it!
Anytime I pick my iPhone , I imagine and appreciate the amazing work and brains behind such a small compact device. I wished I could say the same about android
i can emulate entire wii games at 144 hz on my phone buddy, nobody is jealous of a biased video
This was a masterpiece. Beautiful presentation and very entertaining.
I’m very impressed by your videos. Great great job buddy thanks
"A Song Of Ice and Firestorm" OHHHH Rene you killed it!
Fantastic video. Well done.
Hey Tim, crazy idea, maybe hire Rene? So much amazing information!!
Great video. When they use these for ipads, do they repurpose these other parts on the chip that would be used for photography and video to other uses? Otherwise they're a bit of a waste on something that doesn't really do video regularly
so good.
you deserve 300k subs
Amazing video. Congratulations and thanks
Clicked so fast I pulled my hamstring
Get the icy hot
Hahaha, took me forever to make!
Did you click with your foot or have to leap across the room? 🧐
@@ReneRitchie yes but you do it so well!👌🏾🖖🏾🖖🏾
Damn, that’s a deep dive! 👀
Every CZcams high tech reviewers should take a look at this video. This is a perfect example of how a deep dive for general audience, which is of course CZcams’s majority, should be done. 👍🏻
Hopefully this time the processor is fast enough to not feel slow after 12 months of use like every iPhone I owned from the 1 to the 7.
Thank you for this video!
Very educational. Thanks!
Yo nice video dude
Subscribed. This is impressive content
Fantastic overview
Sheesh Rene a OG bruh was on 1000 the whole video!
What a damn great video. I am super impressed.
Finally, love this video
Wow sangat mendalam penerangan ini…bagus
Yes, I'd love to see the same kind of detailed info on the new M1 chip!
Happy to be a member. Thank you for your break downs.
Thanks for watching, how'd you like it?
I learned allot, thanks :D
It's GOTTA be fast if it's gonna encode every photo to a hash and then compare it to a huge db of other hashes in time to let you take your next photo.
You do good work Rene, give us a rundown on how much processing and battery it takes to run the process of checking every photo for matches to the CSAM db. It would be interesting to know just how much of your iphone's processors are being taken from the owner.
That's done server side, not on the phone. And only with images stored in iCloud. Interesting sneak-diss, though.
This was amazing perfectly explained
this video will be the reason to get my first iPhone
The point you made about the afterburner card is truly mind blowing 🤯🤯🤯
Seriously! Imagine what it'll be like on a Mac?
The best deep dive, period
Great nerd description! Love it!!!
Now that's a deep dive!
Rene, I think that silence cutting program is a little to aggressive. Couple times in the first 6min the your audio was clipped.
Well done!
Great video. The amount of hours that must have gone in its piece must be crazy. Solid work Rane!
Awesome again man
Thank you sir your awesome with these apple videos
Rene, ok ok I will subscribe, what a video!
Would love an S1 to M1 Chip video
Very well made video! Now I’m a bit smarter. 😄 Thank you! 👍
One of the main reason why i switched to ios, the chip. At first, like first week of using iphone i felt like it was a downgrade from android phone i use but the more i use it the more i realize how great ios is (except for the battery). Im using Android phone since i was in highscholl, Motorolla, now i am 31 years old and just switched to iphone and i dont think i would go back to android.
Edit:
I have a 7years old ipad air2, and still run the ios 15 which is unbelievable. I already changed my android phone 3 times while i my ipad is still as good as new. Android phones sucked every update and makes my phone losses it smooth software. Bow, with the A15, i am sure that my phone would last 5 or more years and still work as good and new as it is.
Facts. Androids be lagging, shit is annoying asf
Think you expected too much from a Motorola
i can emulate entire wii games at 144 hz on my phone buddy, apple cant emulate so i can download anything i want
S1 to M1 would be a fun video to watch
